I did the same a few weeks ago to my fescue front yard and blue grass back yard. I scarified/dethatched both yards and used the rake to get everything up. The bag on the machine doesn't hold much so it's easier to just rake up.

Currently looking out the window at my beautiful 4", 22 day old TTTF/bluegrass mix. I couldn't believe I had germination after 5 days! For the seed bag, you don't have to cut the end. Just remove the end of the string from the loop and pull. If it knots up, wrong end. The correct end will just open right up.

I thought my little brown spots scattered in my KYB lawn were 'hot spots' or some disease, even though I watered heavily and the surrounding lawn is pretty lush. They had been in the lawn for many weeks with our dry spell. I put down Both kinds of granular grub control (season and 24 hour), earlier in the season. I kind of thought it was just the KYB being dramatic in the heat of summer. Last week I started noticing what looked like someone had aerated large amounts of the lawn. But no, it is a skunk and he is concentrating on pulling out quarter sized plugs - mostly on those dead spots, and having all he can eat at the grub buffet ! It seems like they can sense these things and feel like I should let him clear them out as none of the big box grub killers seemed to do the job as consistently as it should. I had never seen a episode on the lawn channels about skunks vs. grubs. I only thought moles did this stuff, from underneath. lol

I find this thatch is your harvest and when you make rich compost from your hard work it's like a math equation science experiment you just keep alive add that compost back with the over seed for any areas that need it doesn't get any better than that

If you have water I don't worry about going too early. You want 8 weeks before a frost if possible

Hoping a dethatch, aeration and Overseeing brings new growth for next spring. Also Installing above ground irrigation to see if i like it before committing to a more permanent solution.

I’m going to overseed 1000 ft.² of my front lawn that has always been pretty bad shape. Must’ve gotten bad sod because the rest of the yard looks good. This past Saturday I bought a green works electric Thatcher and used it after cutting the lawn on a low setting. I raked the clippings and bagged them. I purchased a bag of Jonathan green seed and starting fertilizer from them. I’ve had 2 inches of rain in the last couple days after a month of drought. It’s pretty bumpy and has a few low spots. My plan is to buy a yard of soil compost mix and put it down on top of the grass, I’m confused as to whether I should put the seed and the fertilizer down first and then slightly cover with this mix or put the mix down first then the seed? I am in Southeast Wisconsin. The Thatcher also has a scarifier blade. I’m not gonna aerate. Don’t have one available in my area and too heavy for me to handle any advice appreciated. I have a sprinkler system there.

Do the soil/compost mix first and then seed on top. Then lightly run a rake or a garden weasel over the seed to get it mixed with the soil and you’ll be good. If you seed first and then put the soil mix on top, you run the risk of the seed being a little too buried under the soil and it may not be able to push through.

No more than a quarter inch of soil on top of new seed. And rent a sod roller for seed to soil contact for better results.

Maybe it’s because you are not able to support the method or are against it, many others speak in favor of pre-germinating the seeds by soaking in water as one example. Very curious of your thoughts or success with this method.

It's not necessary and can mess up the seed if you don't do it correctly so I don't utilize that method.

Mine sucked this year too, but I did it mid-august. Temps were way too hot and I couldn't get down enough water (no irrigation system so I'm dragging hoses).

Same for me. I had to apply more seed and use a lawn cover on the bare spots. The cover made all the difference. You can definitely see the difference in areas where the cover was used. It provided great germination results.

I am adding some Kentucky Bluegrass. I have seeded the spots that need it and generally followed the recommendations you have given. However, I had some last minute work trips come up that prevented me from watering consistently. There are still some patches that have not germinated. Basically it is the more dry spots. Did I waste the seed, or can I get water on it consistently when I become available again? I seeded about 2 weeks ago.

6:08 Turn the bag so the double seam is towards you, then untie the string starting on the left hand side. At least that’s how the sewing gun worked when I used to seal those bags up. Good luck! And thanks for all the information you provide in your videos!
