You have put a tremendous amount of work into your prep. I'm impressed. You mentioned you store your canned foods in your basement. I would love a tour of that space to see what you've done and how you store it. it's all quite impressive really. As you worked, I kept thinking what great gifts canned food makes. Especially around the holidays. Great work 👏🏻‼️👏🏻
Thank you!! I really debated sharing how I do this, but so many have asked for me to share. I fully understand why some choose not to can this way. But this is how my family has done canning for hundreds of years with out one negative result. We love our home canned goods! Thank you for watching!
@@AdalineZook I know a ton of people still do it this way, especially in countries where people don't have access to pressure canners. I open-kettle pickles and tomatoes with no issues too!
I find this so weird. Every part of the world cans in the traditional way, I think maybe only in the US they use a pressure canner. Why are americans afraid to say when they DO can in water bath?
More videos like this, please! Pro tip: next time you have a lot of kiwis to peel, cut the ends off, slide a spoon under the skin, and slide it around the kiwi. The peel slips right off in one piece and you’re left with a naked kiwi! I’ve been researching canning, and all of the experts recommend using bottled lemon juice instead of fresh lemons, because you need the correct pH level for water bath canning. Apparently, there is quite a variation between fresh lemons. Also, true dry canning is done in the oven. You vacuum sealed your maple syrup.
I LOVE this!! I love to see how you do long term storage items!! Can you show us how you do your canned potatoes? Or more please!! Love this series of the "long term" items.
A year after filming this and I enjoyed every second. You must be an excellent teacher when it comes to homeschooling your girls cuz you're an excellent teacher on here!!😊
This is really cool. One of my earliest memories is hanging out in my grandmother's cellar with her and being in absolute awe over all of her canned goods she did herself. I've always wanted to learn how to can bc of my memories but have always been too intimidated. This video makes it seem a lot more attainable.
Just a note on the storage bags. If you turn the top inside out, its a lot easier to keep the outside of your bag from being contaminated. Then when they are all filled, wash your hands and flip the end up to vacuum pack. I’ve also learned to cook it up before freezing, and I can take it out, defrost it, and requires a lot less work. You don’t even have to cook it all the way, cook until almost done, and a quick pan fry, or microwave will finish it up quickly with a lot less mess. What a great video! Hope this is a tip that helps someone!
I really enjoy watching your canning and preserving. Your methods are like mine. I'm 78 years old and I learned from my mother and grand mother. Could you tell me how you access bulk food items.
I applauded the effort you did in all the canning you did that was a lot of work. Its a shame none of the canning was done safely. A lot of the "old time" ways of doing canning have been proven to no longer be safe. I do like to watch your cooking videos otherwise.
Your house could be a little restaurant or cafe with all your hard work and cool gadgets! Thanks for the great video. We don’t have any room in our house for lots of extra food but if we did I’d look to you for inspiration to stock up!
Lov ur videos. I'm new to ur channel my oldest talks Abt u all the time. Ik Abt kidney stones, I had 1 stuck in my eurtheia,it was the size of my thumb nail, had to have emergency surgery @ 8;30 @ nite. Then back to rehab, had to learn how to walk again.Alsi had home therapy for 3 months. I now walk w a cane n walker among other health issues. Stay strong
I would love to get a food saver but I am afraid I wouldn’t use it enough! what else can you use the food saver to save long term?! Would love a video of long term food prep of different things you can do with the food saver! I love the bacon one!!
Love this video! Super way to preserve your food! We have been doing the dry food canning but we use our vacuum sealer it has a place on the side where you can plug it in and it works really good. 😊💐💐
QQ: if canning traditionally means 3hrs of running the stove per batch, wouldn't it be more economical anf time-saving to get a pressure canner? Planning to buy an electric one..
Adaline, do you have any bread recipes for gluten free/ dairy free. I have 2 granddaughters & a nephew who need to be gluten free & one of them is dairy free as well. I’d like to be able to make a homemade bread for them.
What else besides water did you put in your carrots? I made your strawberry jam but it's not thickening up. I may bake blended too much cause there's only a few Chinese OOPS!! 😢
This may sound silly, but why did you can the frozen peas? I can understand all the other stuff you made and canned, but not the peas. If they are frozen, they are good for a while, and you didn't change them (I.e to mushy peas). Very curious :)
The brake pump that you use to seal your jars -how do you determine the amount of pressure that you use -or what number do you get the pressure up to to have the jar seal?
You're doing some awesome stuff Adaline. Can you tell me though why if your maple syrup jars were already sealed when you took the O2 out, did you pit the rings on? Just curious.
Vegetables need to be pressure canned not boiled canned. That is how you get botulism. Im sorry but what ever your reasoning is for doing it this way, please don't teach others how to do it wrong.
Vegetables don't need to be pressure canned. How do you think the rest of the world does it? We don't have pressure canners. The few people that do, have imported ones from the US. And yes, I'm very aware of the fact that English-language sources for canning tell you that you're going to die if you use water canning, which is why those sources are useless to us, because of the lack of available pressure canners. If you follow the rules when it comes to water canning, you should do just fine.
