Been making this kind of stuff all my life. Everyone tells me I should try and make extra dough doing it. What If I charged like a hundred bucks for some wire, glue and cottonballs in a frame?
The mini skeletons are at Dollar Tree right now. 5 for a $1. They also sell picture frames in various sizes that come with glass. A white cardboard box glued to the frame back could be an inexpensive display case.
I use the black foam core poster board that dollar tree sells to make the shadow box any depth I want it, glue it together with hot glue, then touch up the edges with black paint, then glue it to the frame inset...
It would be so cool if one of the wings had a tiny arrow shot trough it. From the fairy police, chaseing him because he robbed a berry from a tree or something. 😆😆. Love it , im dying to make some, with one trying to escape from the display box ha ha be so fun, like his lil hand sticking out of the opening of the boxand his face turned as if he was looking directly at you to see if you catch him,.i know, im mad.,
I have to say is creepy... however the idea is genius, I’m impress with imagination and the idea to do such wonderful work it looks great. Excellent work Eduardo. I was so curious on how you were about to make the wings. Great art work .
This gave me an idea to make my kid a Harry Potter Pixie using these techniques! They'll love it "mummified". :) Also you can make air dried putty with materials you may have lying around your house. Add ½ cup of cornstarch, then 4 oz of white glue. Mix them together until there’s a smooth icing like consistency. Add 2 tbs of oil and 1 tbs lemon juice, then give a quick mix. Pop in microwave for 30 seconds, take out give it a quick mix and place back in for 30 seconds. After it's done take a wooden spoon and move around the bowl until it has dough-like consistency. Remove clay and place on parchment paper, and gently knead it with cornstarch until it’s no longer sticky. It should have smooth creamy texture. Shape however you like, leave to dry. Place un-used putty in air-tight container.
I'm so macabre I thought this was going to be actual squirrel bones and bat wings and I was like hell yeah. This is great too, now if I get around to making this my friends will think I'm a little less creepy. Also awesome find on the sculpey clay, I'm so jealous. You're so cool.
I don't think strands of hair survive the process but that looks really cool, tho. You could seriously make something like that and get some fake news reports! hahahah
I followed your tutorial and the project turned out quite nice. Thanks. I finished mine with a thin coat of flat sealant spray. It knocked back the shine and gave the figure a dried leaf sort of parchment look. Very effective. :-)
I love this!!! The only thing different I would have done was paint the shadow box an off white or very light tan to help the "fairy" stick out more and to give it an overall more vintage-y feel.
JJ Hafford I was thinking something along the lines of faux antiquity, since the label was also made to look quite aged. But, either way, I agree with it being just too white and bright.
i made a jar of pixie wings. I used those maple keys that fall off trees in autumn. We used to call them helicopters because of the way they twirl in the wind. I filled an old wine decanter with moss halfway. Then i used the crayola air dry clay and made a few tiny bones scattered them in and some feathers. I used blue water colours to paint the dried maple keys and then a teal old sparkly eyeshadow dusted over the keys to give them an iridescent look and put them in. Drew up a label, aged it with teabags and burned the edges for a really old look. They look so cool. dried leaves are great for fairy wings too. Im going to try this tutorial and see if i can make a good one. If i do it..ill link my instagram to all my weird stuff i make.
I made one of these last year using a different technique. I added sparkles and colourful paint to mine to give it a magical look. Yours looks much better and more authentic. People love the big props but small details like this really make your haunt unique.
This was really really cool!! I work at a haunted attraction and we've been looking for a way to add more details to our "witch" section and this will be perfect. Thank you
Now this just makes me want to make a mummified sleeping fairy.... Like, I imagine that it got caught out in the snow for far too long and eventually died of hypothermia, where it the. Landed and became mummified by the snow.... .......Yeah.... I have dark thoughts....
I don’t think Pat Robertson would approve of keeping this strange icon in the house. He sees demons everywhere, even in stuff from GW. He suggests exorcising it, just to be safe.
I agree. I've found USED DOLLAR TREE items at my local salvation army and goodwill for over $3!! Really!? And the other, family owned thrifts around here really only have clothes and furniture. Nothing "crafty". 😔
If you need more of those pins, they're generally called "dressmakers' pins" and aren't overtly expensive. Thanks for the tut, ideas on how to use the basic haunt techniques really stir up the old imagination.
I just discovered this tute video and i really enjoyed it. What dollar store did you buy the plastic film from? I have two suggestions; 1) bone and organic tissue age quite differently so may i suggest staining w/ 2 different colors? Perhaps a lighter shade of the same stain for the bones. 2) in some cases hot glue is too bulky for such small detail. Try using crazy glue/perma bond for the eyes, horns and joints. These skeletons are the same pvc as model kits so this glue will set fast and firm w/ no bulkiness. Dollar Tree has 2/pks of .03oz bottles for .99 cents. And you only need one tiny drop for a good bond.
That looks really cool, gross, disgusting and interesting all at the same time! I really like it! I have never known fairies or sprites tho to have horns. So I would leave those off.
Omg I love that one !!! I can't wait to see if I can make one !! My daughter collects fairies. This will be amazing to add to her collection ( she's an adult).
Absolutely amazing!!!! And your handwriting makes just the difference to make it look even more Rea;istic; professors handwriting ;) Thank you for sharing I'm definitely giving this a go and try to create my own.
Oh wow this is great I have so much forest at home it would be just exactly where you would find something like that. ..we just uncovered a new stone circle too....btw my Halloween thumbnail makes me look well attractive haha!
Looks really great, idk why Michael's doesn't carry the little bottles of stain anymore, (Apple Barrel, American Craft) they charge $12 for the little can's. Hmm, you know might make one and put some pressed flowers or dried mushrooms and state location found!
Dollar Tree has stain markers that are used to fix furniture scratches. Those might work or their shoe polish. Although I'd give it a spray with a clear overcoat once done staining it. The little skelaton Garland 4 pack is available there. I I remember right you might be able to pose the figure as well. They also have various floral wires.
Menards sells sample sizes of Varathane wood stains for less than $1. They are about the size of a ketchup or sauce packet, and should be enough to do one of these little creatures. Great if you cant decide what color stain you want, or want to do different color body or wings
The Tim Holtz (for Ranger) Distress line -distress ink, paint & stain, took over that product niche, more $-$$. I still use my Apple Barrel but the Distress line is more fun, beautiful execution over multiple mediums. (3pk at Michael's or Joann's, some singles @ Hobby Lobby or online) Although I find using whatever you already have, is always a more interesting & rewarding challenge (shallaun'zh) oooOOH ha Ha!
Your tuts are so enjoyable that I constantly grin at my laptop's screen when watching them. I love creative monsters! P.S. You resemble my dentist. You both even have a similar voice.
Ok so I just found your channel and I absolutely love it. My house is going to look so damn awesome this Halloween (or well year round for me, as I'm one of those people who have skulls and stuff out year round)
Saludos, ET
I'm just in the planning stage for a similar prop ^^ I'm working on having a little fairy corpse pawing at the glass of a bell jar its been trapped in. Going to keep some of the techniques here in mind :)
An artist made ephemera like this. He then started an internet site about a "museum" he curates, items left in an old estate by a Victorian era British man. He even faked documents. He made all this as an "art piece" and later revealed his identity and the truth about his museum pieces. Some people still think its legit, and refuse to be told otherwise.
I made four of them and they turned out great. I used 8x10 picture frames for the shadow boxes from the dollar tree , made them all for $7 dollars, you are amazing. Thank you
I'd suggest not using bake shop clay. Also if you cannot bake your piece that has clay on it, then I'd suggest using a two part epoxy sculpt. It cures nice and strong and is like plastic once it cures.
Another winner, what a great tutorial ET, thank you. After your milk jug skull tutorial, I bought a heat gun & did my first milk jug skull yesterday (pretty happy with the result). Now I'm looking forward to making this one. For small horns I've successfully used mouldable self-setting silicone (like Sugru but I buy cheaper brand-about $1 for one sm pack), very easy to use & no baking needed. In this case, I would add either black or red horns at the very end, after the corpsing is done.
Liking Helps Get Ed's Attention. Edward, you are an amazing individual, could I contact you for an inquiry on the styles and designs and so the audiance could get some more insight of you?
Im so glad I stumbled across your channel while i was looking up Halloween Decor because youre the first person that makes things Id actually want to re-create. Youre amazing, Keep it up.
