Recently a pal asked about how I make the track before I live jam with it. So here it is. A little workflow video from start to end. There's a bit more involved in the process (mastering the final track in Logic etc) so if you'd be keen to see another video with that too, then drop me a comment below and I'll see what I can do. Feel free to ask any questions, I'm by no way an expert but know my way around the OP-1 pretty well.
Enjoy!

I really respect you for showing this kind of uncut workflow, especially when you get asshat comments (and don’t even delete them). Sounds really great! One of the cooler things I’ve heard someone make on an OP-1.

Thank you 👍😊👍 glad you found it entertaining. I'm by no means an expert and this was a bit of fun to make. I'm sure there are absolute wizards out there that don't need any kind of instructional videos, who don't even need to watch 'easy' workflow videos 🙄 anyway. I'm just here to engage with happy people and not people who just like to peddle their BS. Thanks for watching and kindly commenting ❤️‍🔥

very helpful workflow demonstration. I wish more op1 field users would post content like this.

A little trick I do for that pattern sequencer is I leave the Reel on play, so my bar is looping, then go back to the sequencer and toggle the "hold" setting careful to activate it at the start of my loop. That way you can play "live" with the loop and capture notes ( while holding the shift button) to capture the notes on the grid. Its great, I have no idea how ppl use that thing manually 😅
@DanChippendaleMusic
@DanChippendaleMusic 9 месяцев назад
I found that method super frustrating though as if you mistimed a trig you'd have to try and kill that trig the next loop but if you mistimed it again you could end up with several trigs in a row and it just becomes a horrible mess 🥴

This thing would be awesome if it had the op-z sequencer in it but no TE decided to charge you $2000 for a Garbage sequencer. I want to love this thing but I can’t because it lack one of the most important aspects of a groove box, then they only give you four tacks. To fix everything wrong about the op-1 field will take TE implementing all of the op-z features to this device. For 2k we need at lease 8 midi tracks and more song capabilities to justify spending hard cash on something like this. I honestly think the polyend tracker mini runs circles around the op-1. The Roland Mc 101 is a much better buy that come with thousands of sounds and a midi sequencer.

Yep. Totally agree with you. I tried to love the Field (I had it up for sale but cancelled the listing last week to give it one more go) but as much as I tried it just doesn't do it for me. I've realised I'm a step sequence guy and the OP-1 is just too fiddly and lacking the basics to get me to where I want my music. It's a shame because it can be really fun to use but it's a let down. Anyway. I relisted it last week and it sold and I ordered a used Deluge which should arrive this week. The Deluge seems to be everything I want from the OP1 but with midi support, onboard synths, arranger and an excellent sequencer all in a portable box. Let see how I get on with it when it arrives!

Awesome vid! love it, do you have any recommended video like op1 - 101 and how to improve, etc.

Thanks man! Check out Cuckoo's original OP1 videos. Also Red means recording. Think they have some OP1 Field videos too. I'll be honest, I sold the Field a while back. 😁

Considering getting one…. To play live .. just the op1. Maybe their mixer and a mic. The limitations, no undo, might make it a great challenge. I play experimental noise music. What do ya think- over priced, too limited, etc.?
@GOSHacid

I think it works well as a nice experimental box. The constraints are part of the appeal

Been playing guitar for 20yrs, self taught - broke my hand really badly a few years back and can't play anymore (was absolutely heart broken) Bought a first gen OP-1 last year and I *absolutely love it* I had zero previous experience with sequencers/sampling/drum machines etc - I was making music within minutes To my mind, OP-1 is basically a musical sketchbook, a quick and intuitive way to quickly get some beats/ideas down Biggest drawback is its so much fun to just noodle and play around on, you end up just jamming to yourself for hours 😂

This is driving me nuts : when I record drums , the recording is quieter and WAY less dynamic ! Playing live and doing this in real time will be a noticeable distraction. Am I doing something wrong ?
@DanChippendaleMusic
@DanChippendaleMusic 11 месяцев назад
Hmm. Yeah I know what you mean. It seems to be based on how much gain (red knob) you add when in tape mode. If you crank that up a bit it should be louder. Or you're using a tape style and it's adding compression and clipping (the preview doesn't include the tape effect, it's only when you record). It could be that too 🤞

Oh god the sequencers... Pattern is incredibly unintuitive - Endless is missing undo/edit - the rest are gimmicks. Finger could be good if it was intuitive to use. TE could ditch all of these (excluding arp) and just have one basic grid sequencer that's easy to use and endless. Then sprinkle in some generative sequencers that lean on polyrhythms/euclidean/circle of 5ths/modes anything musical besides a raffle ticket sequencer. Sketch is miraculously worse than all of these, which is impressive.

Just play the damn open high hat with your friggin finger. Why are you using a sequencer for a simple open hat on the upbeat? This is literally killing me but I can’t stop watching
@brandonwoodward6072
@brandonwoodward6072 10 месяцев назад
This is a literal train wreck. You picked up a portion of a track and lost it. Is jamming just you willy nilly muting tracks and adding random disjointed effects and praying to the wholly mother of god that it works? Sorry if I am being harsh. I think you might want to work on getting a little more eduction and practice before posting something on RU-vid. I guess there really isn’t any reason you shouldn’t except it might make you look some type of way, but I guess you might not care about that which is good.
