I am North American and also know some Russian. Just want you to know that your lessons seem to come across quite clearly and concisely. It would be pleasurable to use recordings like these to refresh my Russian.

@Gedd84 I'm Polish so Russian sounds Russian to me :) Russian is a beautiful and rich language. I would love to learn it. As a kid we had Russian at school but we didn't want to learn it because it was the language of our occupier. We would just speak Polish mimicking the Russian accent and the teachers would give us bad notes for this but enough to proceed to the next class. But I always used to love Russians writers (Bulhakow) and song-makers (Окуджава)

I'm trying to learn russian but i don't understand why the 'o' sound becomes an 'a' sound during some words. Can someone help?
@xJonBro
@xJonBro 11 лет назад
The stress and cadence of voiced vowels like the deep 'o' sound, the way the 'e=ye' like the word 'den' and also 'eto', sound and mean like how they speak in the dutch caribbean, papiamentu.( Its is for the large part broken spanish/portuguese really.. but the pronunciation of stressed vowels are surprisingly similar if you listen close). i.e. /watch?v=XdCOCCPjxGI

@MyUnderSlungLink , When the o is unstressed, it is pronounced like an a as in "ball," or o as in "not." It all depends on the stress.
@easylanguages
@easylanguages 14 лет назад
@MyUnderSlungLink please go to our Russian Language Forum on solarnet (dot)tv and ask there.

@magauchsein So it doesn`t seem to be similar to Portuguese, for example? Someone said it does.

@Gedd84 I am Serbian and Russian sounds very similar. I have been in Russia and I have impression that we feel each other as the belonging to same people in despite of the linguistic differences. A few months are enough and at once when you explain your Serbian origin you are "svoj mezdu svoimi". Old name for Serbia was Rascia " i v Nestorovoj letopisi Ruskie priehali iz za Dunaja iz Bulgarov i Serbov. i "svoj mezdu svoimi".

for me it' so strange "пожалуйста" is 'please' and 'you're welcome' at the same time. if one day I'll speak russian perfectly, I think I would only use "не зашто" as 'you're welcome'... "не зашто" is more similar to what we use in my language.
@SketchyBack

@MyUnderSlungLink If you pronounce it the way it's written you'll be understood. Unstressed "А" and "О" aren't differentiated much. Same deal with unstressed "Е" and "И". Pronounce every unstressed "О" as "А" to get the Moscow accent.
@cristovaofreire
@cristovaofreire 14 лет назад
@MyUnderSlungLink I think when the "o" comes without accent it sounds like "a". спасибо sounds like "spaciba". удача
@tabletalk33
@tabletalk33 13 лет назад
@MyUnderSlungLink Bad news; Russian stress is pretty irregular and unpredictable. However, you can look the word up in a good dictionary or reference grammar where the stress will be clearly marked. Putting in accents to mark stress is customary for Russian textbooks, since obviously a foreigner would have no way of knowing where they are without help.
