*In today's video, I want to share how easy it is to participate in the slow fashion movement. I'll share 7 easy and simple slow fashion hacks for every budget and style, as well as an explanation of slow fashion and what it means to me - essentially, your ultimate GUIDE TO SLOW FASHION. This is a very high level video, and slow fashion is a very nuanced topic - much like its close cousin sustainable fashion. If you'd like to dive deeper, head over to my blog, or leave me a comment with your questions!
On this channel, I share #slowfashion and #sustainablefashion tips that center around how to shop your closet, and restyling pieces you already own. I also spotlight brands that I believe in every now and then. I believe in #creativityoverconsumption, and that we all have the power to be conscious consumers.
Slow fashion looks different for everyone, and I'm so grateful you share this space with me!

My tip - make it your own. I have a beautiful red silk shirt, but found myself not wearing it like I anticipated I would. I was confounded at first because it ticked all the boxes when I purchased it, and I have a pretty solid shopping criteria. Then I realised - the white buttons - I didn't like the contrast of the white buttons. So I found some buttons that matched the fabric and now it is in rotation. Sometimes you just need to make a small adjustment - change the buttons, tailor the fit, dye it another colour. :)

I totally agree. I had a couple of jackets that I adored. It wasn’t wearing. I asked myself the question... what is stopping me from wearing these jackets. I decided it was because the sleeves were a little long. After an afternoon with needle and thread, careful measuring, the sleeves were shortened and voila... these jackets are back on the menu.

Same here! There's a decent chunk of my wardrobe that I haven't worn at all in the past year. Part of that is just circumstantial (i.e. not really having anywhere to wear dressier outfits), but it's definitely made me realize that I probably don't need as many clothes as I have.

One tip that I love and you’ve gone over in other videos is to count your clothing. That was one step that put into perspective for me just HOW MUCH I have. I then compared that with my lifestyle needs and categories to see how they aligned (or not). This slowed me down in my consumption quite a bit.

I agree, slow fashion can be very elitist, with women showing only very expensive designer items and claiming they’re helping by not buying a cheaper one. In fact, these $1,000 sweaters, etc., are often gifted by the brand. We, the 99%, need you for a realistic approach, and you always deliver!

I often buy inexpensive clothes. If you look for a good fabric and the overall quality and non-trendiness when buying, and then take good care of them, they can last ages. For example, I own some basic H&M cotton long sleeve Tees that are more than 10 years old and look like I bought them a week ago, although I wear them regularly. *That* for me is slow fashion.

I wear a lot of white cotton shirts, blouses and t-shirts and pants, so here’s my tip for keeping them white: before washing, turn inside out and spray the underarms, inside collars and cuffs with a stain-removing spray, let sit for 15 - 30” before washing. Then, wash in a load of true whites only, no ivory, cream, beige, colors etc. (I only use white towels, so there’s always some used ones to bulk up these loads). Use the hottest water, detergent and a full scoop of BIZ powder. Agitate for 5 - 10”, then allow to soak for 15 - 30” if they are already stained or grimy, then restart wash cycle. Already stained items can be restored with a half-cup of chlorine bleach instead of the BIZ, but excess use of chlorine bleach actually causes more, not less, yellowing and makes the fibers wear out much more quickly. No more grimy t-shirts and blouses.

My 3 biggest steps were decluttering my closet; creating a signature color palette/style; and shopping at ThredUp. Not that I realized it at the time, but all 3 actions led me to a curated closet with a limited color way and higher quality goods. I don’t get distracted as I know my silhouette preferences as well as color. Using ThredUp’s pinning function, if I need a dress for a summer wedding, for example, I just save 10 dresses in my colors, think for a bit, pare the list down, wait for a sale, and then buy my beautiful dress for a fraction of original price. And that’s how I buy almost all my clothes now: Look for right color and style, think for a few days to a few months, and then buy on sale. Less money, recycling clothes, and great style!

I've been wondering about this very thing! Thanks for explaining in such a gentle way. I was attracted to your channel because of the creativity and shopping your closet content. As a mother of 3 on a tight budget, I shop clearance racks and thrift stores. Other fashion channels throw around terms like and it's only $100 like that's a good deal, but I have 5 people to clothe. I still enjoy those channels and learn from them, but I feel as though I fit in better to this slow fashion category for myself. I have spent a lifetime shopping in thrift stores and giving those clothes one last chance, loving them, and then totally wearing them out. I am encouraged by you

I've been much happier with my clothes and shopping experience buying secondhand on eBay and Etsy and then having clothes altered. I still seem come out ahead financially, and these are items I plan to have forever. It also helps to keep in mind that every article of clothing costs more than just money: It costs real estate in your closet, it costs time and sometimes money to care for.

I got this app called Cladwell where I can see my entire closet and mix and match items, plan my outfits, create capsule wardrobes and even make a wishlist (also fulfills my childhood dream of being like Cher from Clueless). I was shocked how much clothes I already have and yet always felt like I never had enough. It’s made me a lot more mindful in my shopping. Every time I want something I’ll go through my clothes, see if I already have something similar, if it’s on my wishlist or not and add it to the app to see how I’d style it. Very handy!

I no longer buy new except for underwear and shoes. Everything that can be bought new can be found now second-hand. So if I see a cool brand on youtube, I just go to my favorite online consignment shop to find items from this brand. And if you wait for sales at these online consignment stores - you often pay the same or less for a much better quality item than at these fast fashion stores. Also you can pick up trendy styles and colors that are hot that season. The nice thing about a site like Thredup is you can return anything that doesn't absolutely fit you. Speaking of fast fashion, beware of stores like TJ Maxx where you get cheaper clothes from fast fashion brands and that just leads to more buying and discarding. Just speaking from personal experience.

Bonjour Alyssa! I’m shopping my closet for spring-summer and you are a great inspiration. I’m having so much fun doing it! I always invested in higher quality clothes that I purchase off season, and I wear them for years. For this season, I purchased a marinière sweater, a taupe fitted blazer and a white button down shirt from POMP (thanks for the code!). Those are basics that will complement my existing wardrobe, provide more options and will last over time. I’m 52, petite, and I find that the cropped-oversized trend doesn’t suit me at all. I’m not into thrift stores because I hate spending time shopping, so I limit my consumption by buying clothes that fit me well, make me feel good, and wearing them for a long time!

I’m trying so hard to minimize buying, I have so much already. I had a major failure of willpower during the pandemic, it just felt like getting something new delivered was the only thing to liven up my days and look forward to. Now, I have debt, guilt and so many new things that I forget what I have. For me, I think the best thing is just to keep trying. The only thing I do well is to keep, and wear my things for decades, rather than just landfilling them. Both charity donations and textile recycling are still shut down where I live. It’s a start, anyway.

I’ve always taken great care of my clothes, learning it from my mom.. who was a very talented “sewer” who made my sister and me clothes as children. I’m learning now too I DONT need every new trendy piece every season. My closet is full of all kinds of very nice things to wear and by shopping it I have found I can make some great outfits, and not have to buy new. I DO think before I get tempted to buy something new I REALLY DON’T NEED and I’ve been passing on it! Yay Me!

Alyssa, I love your style tips and your focus on caring for our planet! Thanks to your tips, I now shop with a mental wish list, shop resale before retail, and ask how an item will work with my current clothing. Because thrifting is such a fun treasure hunt, I could go overboard. My practice now is to limit myself to the most perfect item in the cart and leave the rest for someone else to enjoy. Thanks!

Love all your comments. One that stands out is: buy according to your shape to start defining your style. So true! I now buy high waisted, straight or wide leg pants and shorter jackets (at the waist) some midi skirts. If I don't know exactly what my style is, I know that I am not boho, nor girly, nor romantic, nor gothic and a mix of the rest depending on my mood. Also yes to taking care of your clothes: I have old pieces (like a few years old!) from H&M and I bought second hand a few Zara pieces that are standing the test of time!

My clothes are a mix of second hand (thrift stores/Op Shops), high street brands and inexpensive budget basics. But I can get distracted by the new and shiny. One of the things I'm doing to help engage my creative brain is picking a scarf (I have about 20) and using that as the basic to shop my closet. I set a wardrobe for a week using the scarf as a jumping off point (not necessarily wear the scarf every day but using the colours, tone and finish as inspiraiton). Thank you Alyssa, you've been a big part of my style journey (along with Janice from The Vivienne Files).

I am trying to be much more mindful of the environment by not going to the dry cleaner's any more. I am washing my own sweaters at home (using a nice liquid soap product that you recommended in a previous video) and drying them on a drying rack. This is a big change for me and saving me a lot of money, as well as trips to the dry cleaners. And the sweaters are coming out a lot nicer (softer, cleaner, smelling really nice!) than they were from the cleaners. Question: What is the best way to dispose of clothing we no longer want in our closets?
@janicevin4207
@janicevin4207 3 года назад
I actually started washing my own sweaters when I had on completely ruined by a dry cleaner. I shop a lot second hand so cheap and I put everything in the washing machine on the quick/cold water cycle and everything is fine. I also hang clothes outside for a fresh smell.

Maybe you can share your way of keeping white things white. For example my skin is very oily on my face and back and after a couple of years my undergarments and t-shirts and even my pyjamas lose their elasticity and shape on the back regardless how often I wash them. There is always a patch at the same place where you can see that the fibers are getting thinner and thinner because the oil of my skin ruined them. Do you have any idea how to fix this problem?

I’ve been asking myself (thanks to you), how might I achieve this look I am wanting to buy with what I already have? Also rotating spring/summer wardrobe choices with fall/winter has helped me a lot as I feel like I have new clothes just because I haven’t seen them for six months! I also have been pushing myself to wear the things that I haven’t worn and asking myself how I feel in those items instead of asking whether it looks fashionable. Do I like using this item? Do I feel beautiful in it? I have a blouse on today that I have not worn all winter which is the perfect color for me, but the jury is still out. I realized I didn’t reach for it all winter. Why not? Idk, so I’m combining it in a different way today than I did yesterday to see if this is something I need to keep in my closet or not. This was a take away from a different video you did. Thanks for all I’m learning from you Alyssa!

Finding your style is more about what you like to wear. If you take your favorite pieces out and put them on a rack/bed and take a good hard look at your choices; I'll bet you will see a theme running through those pieces. When I finally got serious about cleaning out my closet I removed every piece that I did not wear. Some pieces I liked but never wore. These were the hard pieces to let go of but they just took up closet space. What was left was "my style". That turned out to be the opposite of pulling out your favorite but I already done the work and didn't know it.

She’s also wears a lot of beautiful pieces that have been passed on to her from her grandmother ( mom Mom)! It’s such a thrill for all of us to see these lovely pieces still being worn and enjoyed! So buy good quality, take good care of your clothes and pass them on to another generation.

My husband loves thrifting. Clothes, furniture, you name it. He finds super high end clothing that often still has tags!! He found italian hand crafted wool trousers at Good Will for $5!! Never been worn, tags on! He's found several really high end quality men's blazers and tuxedo jackets. He's got a gift for it.

My top values are: ethical manufacturing and avoiding plastic (including polyester and acrylic). I'm also selective about the item being "perfect" according to the colours, fabrics, cuts, etc. that I like best. I still need to spend less time shopping overall, though. 🤫 Mostly thrift.

It just happened. All my shoes are thrifted now. I love expensive shoes (quality), but don't like the price. Since covid I started shopping Threadup and found they have items in really good shape. I use to go to Goodwill and other brick and mortar stores. I use e-bay and Poshmark less now. I can't believe all the good stuff the people gave up and don't want anymore. I've purchased a lot of used clothing. What I learned is, my earlier choices were because of the price, or my "idea" of what I wanted to look like. I've now curated my closet and love it very much. Now that I've done all the hard work I sometimes sit and can't think of anything I want to add to my closet. I did do a big overhaul about six months ago because my closet was looking really tired. Now I only have to maintain it.

Hi Alyssa. This video is excellent! I’m going to watch it again and take notes. Recently I’ve been going around in circles as I’ve been mindfully filling some gaps in my wardrobe but the companies I’ve ended up buying from tick the boxes for me in terms of natural or recycled fabric choice but not as well on the social justice element. However another company I was thinking of buying from ticks the boxes on everything on the “Good On You” app but the fact their production is so large and you can find their garments in multiples in charity shops didn’t sit well with me, I felt that they had more of a Fast Fashion mindset in my opinion. Yet the company I’ve bought from you can rarely find secondhand as they sell lot of wardrobe staples and it’s clear that their pieces are kept on a more long term basis. It’s clear that not all companies re going to tick all the boxes and formulating my own tick lit based on my own values I the way to go. So thank you!

Buenos dias Alyssa. I find these series of videos inspirational, I am becoming more aware of slow fashion and your tips are very helpful. Better quality garments are in our closets and in thrift shops. Please continue producing these type of videos. I enjoy shopping in my closet and now I am shopping more often in my mom's closet as well.😊👍 and as a bonus we create unique outfits , eliminate the stress of shopping, feeling guilty after buying something we don't really need. After I shop in my closet I feel so proud of myself, I save money, save the environment and use my creativity. In my 20s I owned less clothes I used my creativity to create unique and elegant outfit. Your visits are encouraging me to do the same niw in my 40s.

Hi Alyssa is so impowering. We woman in 2021 needs to be educated in FASHION. Whats go into it. I got a wow fact eg fast fashion in 15days. We need to be more educated as some ladies has the mind of trying to impress than what gos behind the scenes. Thank you.

When I started building my wardrobe I wasn't aware about fast and slow fashion. I just bought what I needed that is within my means and I just try to take care of my clothes. My dress style didn't change much after I reached my late 20s. I've been mostly wearing the same clothes for the past 4 to 8 years. I don't shop for clothes all the time and will keep on wearing them until they can't be worn anymore. I even have a fast fadhion brand shirt that's more than 10 yrs old and I'm still using it. More than 90% of my clothes come from fast fashion brands. What does that say about me if I bought mostly from fast fashion brands but my lifestyle fits the definition for slow fashion?

Agree that this is about participation and not perfection. One million imperfect sustainable shoppers is so much more impactful than a small few that are doing it perfectly... what is doing it perfectly anyway? Can't wait for the next live!

I have acummulated over the past last years and after 2-3 alike home moves, a number of knitting sweaters that got moth holes. Well, instead of throwing them all heedlessly, i been keeping them washed and properly. I plan to amend, embellish the holes; patch or redesign the good portions of that costly alpaca, mohair or kashmir. Its still a proyect, but I allow me a dream.

I found a 100% merino wool gray mock neck sleeveless sweater from Eileen Fisher for $6 at the thrift store. It had a few moth holes so I sewed them up, nearly good as new. Now I have an extremely high quality item that I can dress up or down, layer in the winter or wear alone in the summer. That's what slow fashion means to me.

I think you've explained this really well, Alyssa. We are all at different points of our 'sustainable style' journey but being more mindful about what we are purchasing is a great place to start. I've recently run two webinars on how to 'Streamline your Style' and, just like you said, it's about really knowing what you love and what suits you. When you know this you avoid that classic problem of having lots of clothes and nothing to wear. I've come a long way over the last few years in this respect but I know I can improve a lot more too! Keep up the great work! Love your channel.

Very informative video, thank you! I am heading to Mexico next month and I am starting to look deep into my closet for those pieces that I will pass to my sisters, nieces and friends. Everytime I go there I bring with with me all the clothes that doesn't fit anymore my 12 year old daughter. We do buy brand new clothes and go to the second hand store as well and I have to say I have found classic pieces and kind of trendy pieces in very excellent condition and some times with the tag on it.

I feel like you did define slow fashion in another video but maybe a year ago? However, that said I did not know that is how fast fashion got started! Good history lesson. One tip you gave that helped me was going to thrift stores. I have tried tried and tried the other online sustainable, blah blah blah stores and either out of my budget or I do not like what they have in stock. Thrift stores have been good to me.

Growing up I learned to buy what you need and buy second hand to save money. Today, I still practice this and I apply this concept with everything else like home decor and furniture. I am getting into zero waste living 🥰
