The name of this pattern touches me in a way that makes me remember when I wanted to be a teacher. Since I was 12 I’ve dreamed of being a teacher, but I was stopped by well-meaning nay-sayers so I didn’t pursue it. Then 4 years after college working as a legal secretary, a dear friend told me about a Masters degree program where I could intern as a teacher during the day and attend classes at night. I was already on my own making a good living, but I wasn’t truly happy. It took a year of soul searching and dealing with my inner fear, but I did it!! It took many changes in my current life, but I did it! Now I’ve been teaching Elementary school children for 30 years and counting and I still LOVE it! I will never let fear stop me again. Peace to you and your lovey Tim. 😀❤️👍🏼

Oh this is so beautiful, I have to make it. I struggled with fear for so much of my life. I would say I've faced my fear and became sober a week before my mom passed away from stage 4 pancreatic cancer. I was 5 months pregnant and homeless, but I pushed through and fought for my baby girl. I am now 8 years sober, happily married to her father, and have a place to call home :) Thank you for this today :)

This is a beautiful pattern. Very inspiring. My daughter recently asked me to name one thing I had done that was adventurous [which I think is when you show up bravely in spite of fear]. I answered her that my most brave and adventurous act was when I had adopted her as a single mother! She was in an orphanage in India, and I just knew I could give her a good life. But afraid--yes I was! She's now almost 30 and I am thankful each day that she is in my life, and that I did what I did, despite the fears and doubts.

Your comments before the video actually made me cry. I’ve been fighting my “fences” for quite a long time. Fear is an awful thing that keeps us from our dreams. Thank you for the encouragement to bust through the barriers that keep us from the lives we could have if we just had more courage to step into the unknown.

A year ago I was at one of the lowest points in my life. I was asked to help in a community kitchen as an assistant, mainly the washing up, but also baking desserts. Here i am 15 months later, coming up to 59yrs young, now kitchen lead, making 2 course meals for 30+ people who may not otherwise get a hot meal. I'm no chef, but it's the most satisfying thing when people tell you they love the meal you made them. In the evenings, I crochet to relax and wind down. I've made many of your patterns, Chandi, they all work up so beautifully. Sending you love and gratitude from England ❤👋🇬🇧

Thank you. The story behind this pattern is amazing. Fences. I feel that I have overcome so much in my life. I grew up poor, and just a crazy life as a child. Carried that fear through most of my life. Was a young parent and decided I needed to be strong for my son. Many hurdles later, fear was not going to win. Life has won. I truly find so much inspiration from Expressions. Thank you for being there.

This is beautiful. I love the shades of green. Reflecting back on my life, the first biggest fear/fence I climbed was when I was 18. My parents were of the generation that believed women did not go to college. I had wanted to be a special education teacher for as long as I can remember. I applied to my local college, and when accepted, I worked the whole summer after graduation saving money to go. The difficult part was returning to my parents' home each day for 4 years knowing they didn't approve. I did finally achieve my dream and became a special education teacher. I taught for 35 years and loved every minute. It is one of my favorite accomplishment. 😊

The shade of green is beautiful. When I had to quit a high paying job and got a job closer to home that was flexible in hours and it made me available for my kids at all times. I'm thankful for that decision I had to make because I've made precious memories with my kids since then.

At the age of 18, I stepped away from the shelter of my parents and eloped. I was so young. Now that I am a mother to a 17yo, the fear of that moment hits me now. The man I eloped with became an amazing husband and father. We’re still on this wonderful roller coaster of a life. This is year 29 for us.

Fences are real inside the mind! I jumped one of my fences when I decided to take the National Boards test for Massage Therapist.. it cost a lot of money and I was afraid of failure. The future of my practice depended on my passing this test. My best friend helped me realize that my "test stress" was unfounded since I've never failed a test before. I still studied hard beforehand and passed easily! Thank goodness for my special friend who is always willing to show me the best in myself!

Such a beautiful pattern and shawl. Your yarns and patterns are always gorgeous. I love the message that comes along with it as well. Thanks for always providing positive thoughts along with the patterns. I've had a lot of fears before. I've suffered from an anxiety disorder since I was 11. I had to be taken out of school for intensive therapy and had to go through lots of exposure therapy. It controlled my life, but I learned to take back the control and not be fearful. It taught me a lot. Now as a teenager, I've learned that fears can be overcome and there's always hope. ❤

I absolutely love this pattern! About 5 years ago I needed to make a decision about a procedure to help the pain from the arthritis in my lower back. I was terrified of agreeing to do the procedure! I put it off due to my fear for 2 years. After doing it, I lived for over 18 months with minimal to no pain. I have had this procedure done twice since the first time with the same results. It is only a temporary fix but being pain free is so fantastic! I am so glad that I faced my fears the first time! I just love this shawl and the symbolism it gives. Can’t wait to try it!

You've come up with another very lovely pattern. I can already see making a couple of these for some of the people in my life. I've faced many obstacles/fences over the past 70+ years, the latest being the passing of my soul mate a few years ago. We always loved to see new places and explore together. It took a couple years of just travelling with the kids and seeing family to get used to the idea that I could go on and still see new places to explore and bring his memory with me. I'm still not totally comfortable traveling with only his memories but I'm getting there.

Love this shawl! Those colors are beautiful. Green was my mom’s favorite color. I lost my mom over 29 years ago and still miss her today. I absolutely wish my mom was still with us but crochet keeps me close to her. She taught me how to crochet when I was a little girl. Crochet brings me joy. I just retired last year and wondered if I should have kept working longer as I retired at age 56. Worried that retirement was enough. Have not regretted it once. Especially, having crochet in my life and wonderful RU-vid channels that I enjoy. Thank you for all you do!

Thank you for yet another beautiful pattern, love how each one you offer has meaning beyond just making something lovely with yarn. I’ve always believed that fear tends to be something from the mind (unless of course you’re facing a wild tiger or other immediate life threatening situation) so when my heart says one thing and the mind says the opposite, I try to follow my heart. My life has been full of “fear fences”, from small things like speaking up to career, educational and personal big decisions. Yet when I go with my heart, things work out in the best possible way, even when I didn’t think it would in the beginning.

This is such a beautiful shawl! I love rectangular shawls. And the allure fingering is so soft! Facing fears is something everyone does in different ways. We lost my dad during heart surgery when I was 9 and I have two younger siblings so I had to help the family at a very young age. However, mama always said you can do anything anyone else can do. And, she raised us beautifully and well. We are now 62, 61, and 60. All three married with wonderful home lives.

Your reflections on fences really hit a chord with me, it reminded me of the fences we build around us for protection during hard times, especially if that is during childhood, and how we have to learn to work through and past them later… I had to overcome the fears basically inherited from mum, very caring but also very worried all the time, to go out and try do what I wanted to do. I went to live in several cultures and countries as a result, and while it was quite hard sometimes, it was also wonderful and enriching, and I don’t regret choosing that path!

Thank you Chandi. It's a beautiful shawl, I prefer the wider version. Since I remember myself I was afraid of water and riding bicycles without the training wheels on the sides. After getting to know my husband who's a fish in the water, I let him teach me swim. After the children were born and the oldest got her bicycles and learned to ride them without the training wheels I decided it's time and she and my hubby taught me to ride at the age of 40 😅. I fell so many times but it finally clicked. I still don't like water and rarely swim but I love riding with my family. Good luck to all who are facing their fears. Hopefully you'll learn something new about yourself, your strength and what you're capable doing. It's not always the result that matter but the way there...

This is so gorgeous. I'm currently struggling with agoraphobia. Every day is a challenge and it basically makes me feel like a prisoner in my own home. Luckily I have a wonderful therapist who I see every other week through video calls. Recovery is a slow progress and it's so easy for me to get discouraged and want to give up. But I refuse to do that. I was actually able to leave the house with my husband to buy my mother a birthday dinner! She lives an hour away so it was a huge step for me since my comfort was so far away, but I did it and was able to have a great time. It was the first time in a long time where I was actually happy! I'm hoping that I can continue to make these steps so my life doesn't have to feel like it is on pause. Thank you for sharing this lovely wrap!

I love this pattern - it’s beautiful and I can’t wait to make it. After my father passed away, I was kind of drifting. I had been considering returning to school to pursue my masters degree in nursing, but by that time I was 40 and terrified to go back to school - I thought I was too old and would fail miserably. My father always encouraged and believed in me so much, though, that I decided to give it a shot for him. Well, I did it, and have moved so far in my career and my confidence. I’m so glad I faced those fears and did it scared. ❤

This is a fabulous pattern and I love the green gradient. In my life we spent 6 years living on a sailboat. When we moved on board I didn't know much about sailing and everything made me nervous. We spent about a year fixing up the boat and when we first set sail we had to go through a narrow opening bridge to leave the safe harbor of our marina. That bridge made us very nervous and we hesitated to take the boat out through it. It stood in the way of the adventures we wanted and so we finally decided to do it and everything went smoothly. I am now a competent and confident sailor and I love the adventures the boat brings. Now whenever we realize fear is holding us back from something we say that it is just the next bridge to get through!

So beautiful. I have many fears, and cannot say I faced them well. I overcame them, but I wouldn't call that facing them. I guess being left off at college, hundreds of miles away from home, may have come close. As I watched my mom drive away, I squared my shoulders and turned firmly away to walk back to my dorm, keeping all that fear away for awhile, which was the same advice I gave to my eldest as WE drove away. Go find your place to be with courage.

I raised my daughter and kept a roof over our heads, and sent her to college, on my own! Divorce was a huge fear , at the time, with a baby..but I conquered it, and became such a stronger and better person , at the end . Beautiful shawl . The green hues collection is my favorite color combination 😊 would love to be chosen for this gift ! good luck everyone 🧶🌷💫

How beautiful! We’ve recently sold our home of 40+ years and moved all the way across the country to the west coast to retire near to our family. Mixed emotions…we’re only counting the good ones! Thank you for sharing this pattern and the story behind it.

I faced my fears when I was approached to teach a tapestry weaving class at the studio I learn sewing and I accepted. At 62 I have never taught a class and I was so nervous. It was a success

What a deceptively simple & versatile pattern! The first time I faced my fears was heading off to college hundreds of miles from home. I wound up meeting the love of my life there the next year.

What a beautiful wrap. Love the fencing and the vines. I had a bad episode a few years ago where I couldn't step out of our bedroom for over 18 months and a further seven months to leave the house. I mean I didn't leave our bedroom to go to the bathroom. I used a commode and my amazing husband helped me have sponge baths. I have no idea what caused it and I really hope I never go through it again. Crocheting and knitting are my safe spaces and help me through tough mental times. Congratulations to the designer of this stunning creation. xxJane 🐑🌼

I drove nearly all the way across the country (New York State to Utah) several years ago to move my 88-year-old mom to her new home. I was nervous about going on such a long trip, as I'd never done anything like that before on my own. But we went, just the two of us, and had a grand adventure!

I remember the fear I felt before playing my violin at a grade school assembly, as I had kept my music pursuits separate from my school life, before this! I was used to performing at recitals, but didn't know what to expect in this new setting. I got through it by concentrating on the music, instead of worrying about people's reactions, and it all went well!

I have to say the shawl is beautiful its simplicity makes it so. A time in my life is when I had to look beyond the fence is when I had back to school as an adult to study accounting I still had 2 kids to raise.

The name of this shawl is so meaningful to me right now. I'm facing some big fears right now and looking through the fence hoping that I can climb over it without getting caught by the sharp spikes on top. There is hope on the other side I know. I just need the courage and confidence to start climbing.

This is absolutely beautiful. I chose to go to a trade school for my high-school. This was not the normal path to take as all my friends went to the traditional high-school. I remember being so scared but knew I wanted to learn cosmetology more then anything. I took theses steps and honestly it was the best decision I have ever made. ❤

I think I am in love😍with this shawl!! I love lattice patterns! “Fences”, a fitting name for spring and summer time too as to keep your little ones safe as they play in the yard. While my kids were growing up, I was afraid for their safety outside in the world. Now the concern is for my grandchildren.❤🧶

Ahhh this is a beautiful airy fairy pattern, perfect for summer like we are experiencing here. Definitely faced my fears during my second pregnancy. Going beyond all the fear based advice to cut me ope just because my baby was breech presenting. Well, I cried, I researched, I read more than I have ever done and in the end, freebirthed my sweet baby (who is now almost 8) in a calm and sweet candel-lit environment at home. It was an experience I will never forget and taught me SO much about fear, beliefs and about my Self.

I love this!! I am currently in the process of facing my fears and following my dreams! I am a single empty nested mom who just started a travel nursing assignment to a level one trauma center in Seattle WA!!! I am from a small city in Utah and I’ve never lived in such a big city. So far I couldn’t be more happy to go beyond my usual comfort zone and embrace this time in my life’s journey!! It is so beautiful here!!

What a beautiful shawl and what a beautiful concept. My biggest fence is what if…. What if I can’t do it, what if I don’t like it, what if it takes more than I want to give to get a particular result, what if I fail…. The real failure would be to never have tried and to have never opened the gate to get to the other side of the fence. Thank you for your inspiration 💐

that shawl is definitely perfect for a summer night in the NC mountains! Fear can be such a killer of dreams! It's a constant war with me, from big things to little. One of the most impactful times was when I decided at 16 to move with my parents to Brazil. We left everything behind. Way before internet and cell phones, so we had no communication with family and friends. But in the end, not giving in to fear led me to my adopted brother, my husband and therefore my three children! Fear may be scary, but to jump over that fence is worth it!

I love this shawl. I want to try this. It will be challenging as I always crochet everything by watching a video. I have faced a few fears in my lifetime (haven’t we all). I think the biggest fear and decision was leaving my entire family to move to another state. I was only 23 with a 3 year old child. It worked out and my parents ended up moving where we were in a few years. 40 years later here we are with a few additions. 😊
