Thank Nelson , I need more videos like this , perfect timing for my news orchids, I will love to see how you fertilize your orchids or how to cure them if they get bacterium’s or fungus. I enjoyed this video very much ❤
Wonderful video. Thank you Nelson. I have 2 in desperate need to repot. Nelson how many do you have in your collection. My gosh we need a new tour of the collection. 🤗🌸
Hi Nelson. Medium is very expensive here so when you have a lot of orchids to repot it can be overwhelming. I try to use fresh medium as much as possible. But sometimes I can't so what I do is desinfect medium of plants that are healthy by putting it in a bucket and spraying a good amount of Physan 20 or SA20 in it. Then I pour boiling water to cover it completely. I let it stand until it cools down. Then I pour the water out and reuse the medium. My orchids hardly ever have died after this method, but I sure saved some money 😂😂😂
That sounds like you have had success with what you’re doing. 👍🏼 I totally get it. I’ve put my pots in peroxide for a good 30 minutes and then dry out in sun. All that to save a pot I really liked. When I discover any viral infection, I through the entire thing out. Pot and all. But if you go the extra mile, you greatly reduce any possibility of cross contamination.
Hi Nelson, Thanks so much for the repot tutorial. I love these kinds of videos so much and always discover something new that I can try. Hope you are able to add more of these. ❤😊
Nelson!! This video is timed perfectly! My best friend just got her first orchid and she’s growing outside in Florida, so naturally I was like you have to watch Nelson, Blanca and Melissa! They will help you. And then you released this wonderful video 😁😁 I hope all is well down there in Florida! Thank you Nelson, have a great week buddy 🌺🪴🤗
Nice repotting job with this plant. You selected a beautiful ceramic pot. It does look nice with the flower colors. Must say that I love your longer hairstyle. Very handsome! Hope to see some more videos from you. Stay safe and healthy.
Thank you Pat. I love the pot with that flower. It’s perfect. My hair is just me not knowing what to do with it. Plus I’ve been to busy to go get my hair cut.
Actually… I wasn’t going to remark however, you ARE looking 10 years younger with darker hair now?! ….and /ir something else ..lol!! you’re looking great!😊
Thank you so much. I may do more in the future. My hair is doing what it wants. I’m not really wearing so much product and haven’t really cut it in months.
Thank you for this great video Nelson. It’s a lovely change for us not in the USA. The shows you go to are wonderful and inspiring but a lot of the orchids aren’t available to us in Australia. Maybe other countries but not here. I love the tours of your own collection too but repotting videos will add a lot more interest to your channel as well for us overseas. Love your channel. Love your outlook on life ❤️. Where’s Morris these days? And I miss Laz too ☺️. Many blessings to you Nelson 🙏. Carole.
Thank you. I always have so may things lined up for my episodes. It’s hard to get to everything. Plus the demand for me to be at shows has grown greatly so time is of an issue. Reporting for me I usually do in between work so I never get a chance to record it. I’ll try to squeeze more potting in the future. Morris stays at my neighbors. Every time a male cat decides to stay here, he goes back home. Morris does not like other cats. So he leaves when new ones show up. Ever since Bruce showed up, Morris only comes to visit me at night when Bruce is away hunting.
Morris likes ALL your attention obviously. He’s a little sweetheart. Reminds me of my cat Max I had for 17 years. He had to be around telling me his stories whenever I was busy doing something. Never any pressure to produce specific content Nelson. I love everything you do anyway. Just remember to always try to make time to smell the orchid flowers (smell the roses ☺️) Although us your viewers are important to you, you take care of yourself and those you love first. Blessings 🙏
Those Cattleyas Nelson😌🙌💞I enjoyed watching very much💖I use sphagnum moss in terracotta pots and find it breaths and is airated well. I do use plastic pots Nelson, but that's when I add bark and large-chip pumice and it works fine.
I gave up on all plastic pots. Here in my area it’s way to wet and humid. I use to kill all my Carrleyas and could figure out why. Always root rot. Terracotta is the best for potting. Also any pots with lots of openings. Charcoal and lava pretty much works with most orchids. Most master growers I’ve been visiting all use lava and charcoal.
Great video i definitely choked my Heaven Gate with medium didn’t expose some roots that’s why it died. I usually mount or add to my trees. It’s funny we talked at OFE about it and you did a video thanks now I know.💚
Hi Grisel. Yes that’s the cause of allot of death when repotting. It’s always good to leave about a finger from cane and root above the medium. That’s why lava rock and charcoal is good cause it won’t hold all that moisture. I really like that pot from OFE.
Hi, Nelson great video but please keep an eye on it. My orchid society never recommends glazed pots for orchids because the roots won’t breathe. You need an unglazed pot for orchids. Years ago before I joined an orchid society I lost a few since I kept them in the glazed pots I got them in at HD and Lowe’s. I eventually learned that Better Grow puts them on those pots to make them look pretty to sell but it’s not advised not to keep them permanently. Good luck with this beauty.
Hello. Glazed pots with multiple holes are fine for orchids. You should not use regular glaze pots for orchids. These types of pots are sold at all orchid suppliers. I truly doubt the industry would allow sales of these pots at orchid supply stores knowing it’s not good for orchids. The pot I got has plenty of drainage holes everywhere. Plus I use only lava rock and charcoal. It should be fine.
Just have fun with it. Being scared is not part of orchid keeping. You must take the chance to learn repotting. It’s not as sensitive as people think. The orchids are pretty strong plants.
Great video and very informative! Also, your hair looks great grown out a bit. Im jealous! :) im an overwaterer, and as i started in my orchid journey last year, I followed your lead to mount most of my orchids. I do miss the beautiful pottery, though.
I just repotted two of them yesterday. I put them through the wringer. I cut the dead roots. I kept switching them from pot to pot, one was too big or another was too small. I put them in a mix of bark, lava rock, moss, charcoal, and some leca. I hope they recover from their trauma and do ok.
Nice tidy repot! You made it look simple. My Phaleanopsis have been in sphagnum moss for two years. I would like to repot them into Small Orchid mix. Would that be safe?
Just repot them in New Zealand Spag Moss. I only use that for all my phals. I always place styrofoam bits on the bottom for extra drainage. It’s a good balance between good drainage and moisture retention. Just don’t water as often. I let my phals dry inbetween waterings.
Hi nelson! Great video! I wish i could grow outside😢 I live in Texas, and its just too hot here in the summer and too cold in the winter, so i grow in my dining room that has two whole walls of windows. It also keeps me from continuing to buy orchids, unchecked😂 Anyway, thanks for sharing.
I do have them in all sizes. But I didn’t really want to tamper with this one. I like it solid. I keep that Heavens Gate in check with the watering. Plus it has styrofoam bits at bottoms to help extra drainage. But I will keep that idea of doing side holes for other pots. 👍🏼
Thank you for sharing how you do repot! I didn’t know they can thrive without barks and I love the idea of not worrying about degrading. On another note, how you do repot in clay pot? I saw a lot of people either just put it in a bigger pot or break the old clay pot.
If the roots are attached to a pot, just place inside a slightly bigger pot. It’s fine to do that. The pot just acts like medium material. It won’t decompose.
I finally started watching on my phone. Now I can comment. Usually I watch your videos at night on TV . Love this one. It let me know I am doing it right. Lol. Question. Will you be at Redlands International Orchid Show? I am going to be on a vacation and would love to meet you. On a day that you may not be filming as not to interfere with that. Also. What orchid nurseries would you say I need to visit while there.
Welcome to the chat room. I Weill be at Redland most likely Sunday for meet and greets. Once in the Homestead area you can visit many nurseries. Vicky’s Orchids, Judelis Orchids, RF Orchids, Banjongs Orchids, M.S. Orchids, Martin Orchids, and A Heavenly Garden. Those are all close to each other.
It was nice to see a repotting video for a change. I'm guessing the airy mix is due to the high humidity in Florida. I'll have to get gloves that can be reused for repotting. The plastic ones are such a waste. Have you tried to grow other epiphytes such as bromeliads? A lot of species are native to Florida.
Yes here in my area is extremely humid and can be very wet at times. Charcoal and lava work beautifully together. I do have several different bromeliads throughout my ranch.
If the Cattleya is very large leafed I prefer a wider, narrow pot. But others you can get away like the cobalt blue I used because it has plenty of holes to breath and dry out, plus the Cattleya is one of the smaller flower and thinner leaf.
Not that I know of. They’re used to being sprayed insecticide, fungicide, and other toxic chemicals. I’m sure mosquito repellent should be fine. If you spray on the flower that may cause damage. But not the plant.
Next day on this one in particular. It was late afternoon. If I repot in the morning, then I water right after. You never want to water your orchids late in the day. Always early morning if possible.
In Fall and Winter I water every 3 to 4 days. If it rains, I don’t water for a couple of days those that are exposed to the rain. In Spring I water every other day. If it rains I don’t water. In summer Florida I water every day except when it rains. The orchids I keep under roof in pots I go by eye. If it’s still moist, no need to water.
I REALLY like the repotting videos! I have a little cattleya that I will be repotting soon. Since I’m relatively new to cattleyas, I learn a lot from seeing what mediums other, successful growers use.
