When you mention that the problem with this material is, it might not look good on the sides because you're just scaling on one axis, you already imply a solution: why not scale on another axis? The Z axis for example? The front side might still look odd, but it's better than nothing.

Hey! Great tutorial, but I have a question so if any of you could answer I would be grateful! I did it, and it looks great on the top and sides, but on the bottom everything is inverted (groove color becomes base color, bumps instead of grooves), is there any way to fix it?
@blenderpanther
@blenderpanther 2 года назад
Hi Zeetrik, sorry for the late reply, been at the office till late these couple of days. I think the issue may be that the bottom face has flipped normals. The inversion of the normals is a common symptom. Try this: 1. Go to edit mode. Select all faces. 2. Alt + N to bring up the Normals menu, and select 'Recalculate Outside'. That should fix any flipped normals. Tell me if this works!
@Zeetrik
@Zeetrik 2 года назад
@@blenderpanther oh completely fogot! I managed to fix it yesterday! I tried the normals thing first but it didnt quite work. The thing that worked for me was change the first node (texture coordinate) from object to generated. Thanks for the reply and great video anyway!

Welcome! To add a custom bevel without using the modifier, just select the edges you want to bevel and press Ctrl + B and slide your mouse to adjust the size of the bevel. Scrolling your mouse wheel will allow you to set the number of bevels. Hope this helps!

Perhaps it is a dumb question from a newbie, but wouldn't it be better to make the grains in geometry nodes, so the wood actually has depth?
@blenderpanther
@blenderpanther Год назад
Yes making the grains in Geometry Nodes is definitely an option. The main reason I used this workflow is that the texture could be baked and exported for use in external programs like game engines. But yeah, if you're only using the material in Blender, I would definitely recommend playing around with Geo nodes!

Thanks for sharing! The Musgrave texture has been removed in version 4.1 but can be replaced by the Noise Texture. In the Mapping node, you can also use Z-scaling instead of the X-scaling to stretch the pattern Ryan King Art made a perfect vid about it called "The Musgrave Texture Has Been Removed in Blender 4.1" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2Z75X_Jg8JQ.html

Hi there, unfortunately this does not work with 3D printers! I am not an expert in 3D printing models, but I believe they require 'real' mesh details whereas this is a 'fake' detail created using the bump map.

@HookedOnFunk
@HookedOnFunk 6 месяцев назад
@@MrJohnakel Here is your answer, sir: At 2:10, the author is using the preview that comes with the Node Wrangler addon by clicking on the Wrangler using Ctrl-Shift (he says so in the video). It's only a temporary connection. Later in the video you can clearly see the first Musgrave connected to the top Color Ramp being connected to the Base Color of the Principle BDSF. If you don't want to watch it again, maybe you could have looked at the whole video instead of just trying to copy paste something step by step. You're welcome! As we're at version 4.1 now, the Musgrave has been removed and replaced by Noise Texture (see my other comment).
