I asked who you all wanted to hear on the podcast, and you answered! My sister Laura of Our Oily House is joining me today to talk all about where to start when you are swapping out toxic products in your home. We cover cleaning your home, caring for your hair and skin, and how to fit these projects into a full schedule. Then we answer some of the questions that you all submitted through Instagram. We dive into motherhood, pregnancy, online business, our childhoods, living a natural lifestyle, our differences. We laughed a lot in the episode, and I hope you will enjoy listening in on this chat with my sister!
In this episode, we cover:
- Simple, non-toxic recipes to replace all your household cleaners
- How to find time in your busy life to make natural household products
- The few simple ingredients you can keep in your home to make almost every product you need
- How to use lye in soap making; it’s not as scary as you think!
- What the relationships between our kids look like
- Our theory on why we have both had so many boys in a row
- How you can have time to yourself even with a big family
- Recognizing and appreciating the differences in kids’ personalities
- Making sure you aren’t working 24/7 when you run an online business

I agree with Laura. The more kids; the easier it gets. I raised six kids (which included two sets of twins), and I was not overwhelmed. I loved every minute of raising them. I would go back to that time in a heartbeat. I love watching both your RU-vid channels.

I haven’t finished watching this yet, but just wanted to say that I enjoy both of your channels so much. We have four kids and have a little homestead. It’s fun to see what your families are doing compared to ours. I also enjoy getting tips and learning new things. It’s helpful to me to see that other Moms are working just as hard as I am.

I love this. Just yesterday I spent 2 hours at Walmart (doing my regular shopping too but…) reading the backs of cleaning products to try and find things that were more natural; as few non plant based chemicals as possible. I wish I saw this video before I went! Over just the past few months I’ve had such inspiration from Farmhouse on Boone. My sourdough starter is thriving, I got the PERFECT bottles to start making water kefir at aldis the other day for $2 a bottle (!!), and now I’m working on clearing out chemicals from our home environment. (I’ve even been regularly talking to hubby above wanting to buy a home in our future where we can have a cow and chickens. 😆) Thank you both so much these videos are actually life changing!

I found that most items that I went "DIY" all natural with had a lot of the same ingredients. Buying in bulk made it less expensive starting out. I started small and with what was most important to my family. I just started learning soap making and gradually added bars to our stock. Once you learn "how to" it all becomes apart of homemaking schedule / process. I Love you both, SIC! Keep encouraging us all to be better homemakers than we were yesterday. Thank you for taking the time to do so! God Bless!

I really enjoyed getting to "know" each of you a bit better. My sister lives in Texas, while I'm transplanted to NE Ohio. When we get together, it is such a blessing! We did not grow up on a farm, typical suburban lives, but we each have adopted similar down-to-earth lifestyles, with farming/horses, homeschooling (back in the day), and lots of DIY projects. Thanks for sharing today!! I was blessed!

Loved this, so fun with you two together. My doctor told us his theory on why some people have girls or boys more. He thought it depends on when you “go for it”. This was so great!!💗 I have a gut feeling that you two are spot on about the girl vs boys pregnancies. I had two girls first and then two boys. I didn't have boys until I healed my gut, started drinking homemade bone broth and eating ferments everyday. I even have a history of thyroid issues that should make me have a tough time getting pregnant. Never thought about the red raspberry leaf before! As an herbalist, this is fascinating to me! With my boys I drank a quart everyday starting in the first trimester. Thank you for a wonderful chat! 👏🏼🌻 Super excited for Laura to have a home birth! 🥰

Many years ago I have switched to natural cleaning products which were not totally natural as they say (I am an avid label reader) and decided to make my own cleaning products and as well my own skincare and selfcare products. As long as you have most ingredients on hand it is pretty easy to whip these products up. I would like to recommend when you make your own tooth powder or paste to always use a sweetener such as stevia that comes from the plant it self not the white powder that you buy in a packet. The stevia in liquid form or what I use is the one dried and powdered from the leaves of the plant which you can purchase from an herb company or grow the plant and dry and grind up yourself. I would not recommend using xylitol as it is a highly processed sweetener and very toxic to dogs if to have any in your house. Essential oils play a vital role in your cleaning and selfcare products so it's important to have a few on hand and my staples and favorites include lavender, frankincense, eucalyptus, peppermint and lemon. I also have tea tree oil because its great to add to your cleaning products for it's disinfectant properties. Thank you Lisa and Laura for this video and to help educate people about healthy alternatives. I can go and write much more because I am passionate about this but I will leave it at that. To health! Cindy

I really enjoyed this! Loved hearing more about your personal life. And I found that so interesting about your theory with acidity and boys vs. girls, etc. I’ve thought the same theory since I eat in the same way but with the opositor conclusion since I had one boy first and just recently delivered my fifth girl in a row. Ha! Who knows? I’ve also heard that you are more likely to have girls as you get older? I think that has to do with PH also. (I’m 41) anyway, I found it interesting! And I found it super interesting your theory about red raspberry leaf tea. drank a ton of it all throughout this past pregnancy and baby was the latest I’ve had (3 days-almost 4 days late). It’s weird cause you would think it would be the opposite! (You would think it would be getting your uterus strong and ready for labor sooner).

I also noticed that you mentioned your faith as part of big family decisions (same here) and you said something about as an unbeliever, that didn’t play into it. I would love to hear sometime about your testimony. Did you come to faith as an adult? I know this is personal so I understand if you don’t want to include it on your channel (although I’m sure it could impact many), was just curious to hear more if you someday fell led to share. Thanks for all you do!

How did you became a believer? And how exactly faith plays into having a big family (is it aversion to contraception pr something else?).
