Trash to terracotta is your next weekend project and the upcycling movement you so need to join! I created this easy technique for making ceramic effect chalk paint, which can be used to upcycle ugly vases, and also for painting planters, cups and anything else you want to give a ceramic look.

I just tried this and my vases look amazing! Thank you so much for this idea! I've tried both baking powder and bicarbonate soda, both work great. The baking powder creates a more thick and mouse-like texture. B. Soda is a bit lighter but also has this grainy texture, I would say it goes on much lighter.

I really want to try doing this. My only concern is does it chip off easily, or leave residue on surfaces (once completely dried)?? Thanks!

I am soooo unbelievably grateful you shared this! I have been trying to find old Spanish types of vases for super cheap for MONTHS! I finally gave up a few days ago because they were all just way to expensive for nothing, now I just ran across your video and I am sooo excited!!! Going to the thrift store ASAP to try this! I’ve seen videos on this years ago and I’ve been doing it since. She didn’t come up with it, unfortunately. If you follow a lot of thrifting channels or home decor channels you’ll see, it’s been around. It’s a great idea though, huh! ☺️

For anyone wondering she used White: Haymes Paint in Minimalist Pink: Taubmans in Pale Russet Yellow: Dulux in Raw Umber Orange: Megatreat Liquid Terracotta (I didn’t add baking powder to this)

omg! I was like why does this girl look so familiar?... I used to be obsessed with your sewing blog posts on a Pair and a Spare! I remember making the DIY off the shoulder top and a DIY off the shoulder dress from a men's shirt. I also made other things that turned out to be fails but that's okay because trying and failing is how I eventually learned how to sew. So glad to randomly run into your channel!

Literally did this today! Sampling Vivid White for the house had quite a bit left grabbed a small yellow ceramic vase and plastic balloon shaped indoor plant sprayer with a gold top. They both look great and when I put the gold nozzle top on no way can you tell it’s plastic! 👍

I did it, I would use primer and spray paint them first before this, so it sticks better!

I wouldn’t use this on anything you actually use, instead of stuff that is just for decoration. It would not be durable and just scratch off. Also, wiping it with a wet cloth will take off the paint.

Is this going to be waterproof? and can I just use dollar store acrylic paint? :)

It will be. Acrylic is also used for fabric paint which is washable. I used the dollar store acrylic mix with water to stain my deck. It's held up. Tempra, though is not waterproof. That said, I'd test it on a scrap piece. And I wouldn't put them in a sink of soapy water.

@@satrim_naays hi, I live in the netherlands and we can only buy baking powder/soda in little tiny bags. I do not know why...So that would mean I would have to buy ALOT of bags haha. We got lots of pre-packaged baking kits.

Hi! You can also use chalk powder found in craft or paint stores.. if you can’t find the powder buy chalk hole like the ones you use to write with and crush them to a fine powder... I have the same in my country can’t buy baking powder in bulk only tiny cans.. Good luck 👍🏻
