LLYT here! In this video I show you how do a water change in my 75 gallon aquarium and 100 gallon turtle tub. Water changes are so important to keep healthy water conditions for your turtle and any coinhabiting fish friends. But they can be a total bummer to do. Check out how I made it easier for myself to do a water change.
Products I used are provided below. Amazon links are affiliate links of which I make a tiny commission if purchased from at no extra cost to you! Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the tips, I was gifted a western painted belly about a month ago, he is doing fine in a10 gallon tank and he will be the only one I do not want to have 100 gallon tanks and turtles!! So far, I have learned that my squirtle can live his whole life comfortably in a 40 gallon tank! Please comment if this is wrong

My automatic water changer is really amazing & versatile. When I got my turtle, my friend who specializes in reptiles & aquatics recommended it & I’m so glad. Mine has lasted 6+(?) years now. I’ve moved a lot from apts to houses, originally w a 40 gal tank & eventually my 90gal. The auto siphon has always worked where I lived. One place I did have to go to the hardware store & buy an adapter for my faucet that would just screw on &off, that cost less than a dollar. My current situation I can run the siphon from my tank out of the house to my hose spicket. When you want to pause water flow it has a shut off valve which is really handy, plus it can also be used gravitationally to save water. I know they charge by footage but I don’t remember mine being that expensive. I think there are some off brands besides Python that are cheaper. Also recommended that’s been really handy is an aquarium vacuum, but I can’t say enough about how good an auto siphon has been to me over the years.

The python (and similar) are great little tools! Still like my method for my own reasons but the adapter bit is good advice. Thanks for the comment!

I came across you videos by accident but I absolutely find them so helpful. I was wondering though, could you do a video on how you clean your canister filter or more specifically what would be a good way to clean one for turtle owners who live in apartment buildings? Cause Im getting a canister filter for my birthday in the next week but I have no idea how I will clean it cause it's the middle of winter for me right now with snow on the ground lol.
@LongLiveYourTurtle
@LongLiveYourTurtle 6 месяцев назад
Hello! if you dont want to go outside at all, you will have to use a sink or bathtub. Just make sure you clear anything food related/dishes far from your cleaning area to avoid bacteria and such. A filter is a bunch of pieces that can individually be cleaned reasonably in a sink, just don't forget to disninfect your work surfaces when you are done!

I'm over here looking for the best way to change the water in my tank without taking the bucket to the sink. And I've just realized the tank is by a window, with a water spigot right outside, so I can empty and fill it very easily lol. But this video was very helpful

I built an overflow pipe from the turtle tank to the drain. I just fill in a bucket of dechlorinated water to the tank daily. So easy. The hard part is washing the sponges by monthly.

you know if you shake weight the round circle thing from the gravel filter in the water it will start the siphon itself no sucking required? unless that's what you are into?

When I put the water conditioner in the bottles or buckets is it ready after I shake it ?? To be put in the tank right away with my turtle? Could I keep her in if I do it every few gallons like you said? I'm going to look into what you have there right now I just have a syphon and only a few gallon bottles & one bucket.. I need to get more buckets lol 🤣 I do have a sink & shower (no tub) & toilet near by .. but, I would need about a 100 ft hose also ..
@LongLiveYourTurtle
@LongLiveYourTurtle 3 года назад
Yes, I put it in right away. As long as you are not dumping way too much in, you should be fine. And the hose/shower setup sounds over the top but it is WAYYY better than lugging buckets. Thanks for the comment!

Does the pump work if the level of the drainage is above the level of the tank? (in this case a pool and the drainage an outdoor sink)
@LongLiveYourTurtle
@LongLiveYourTurtle 2 года назад
Yes! Look at the rated head height of the pump. All pumps will give the height at which it can pump water to. You typically won’t get full pump capability if you max out the head height. Thanks!

Similar to python but with just a hose and faucet. one end of hose in tank with the dirty water, other end attached to faucet which must be lower than the tank. Turn the water on and let the hose fill with water - air comes out the end inside the tank. Kink the hose, shut the water off, unscrew the faucet end and release the kink. Instant siphon without risking the sucking of water through a hose. Either the dirty end of the hose - or the water if you miscalculate...

Is gravel or some form of rock required for a siphon pump to work?
@LongLiveYourTurtle
@LongLiveYourTurtle 4 месяца назад
Nope! Just a hose, water and a low spot for the hose to drain to (lower than the tank)
@shotzz9248
@shotzz9248 3 года назад
When I use my python on my 125 I just turn the water on for a few seconds then it feeds itself. If your sink is lower than the gravel tube it’ll feed by itself.
@LongLiveYourTurtle
@LongLiveYourTurtle 3 года назад
So I have heard that works, how is the drain rate? My tank is about the same height as the sink so it probably would not work great for me, but I’m still curious, thanks for the comment!
@shotzz9248
@shotzz9248 3 года назад
@@LongLiveYourTurtle Well that’s cool that you replied 😂. It drains the tank in around 30-40 minutes. It’s a little slow but I don’t think turning on the water makes it any faster. I have 2 of the pythons because I use one for my fish tanks and one for my turtle tanks.

1- how many full changes per month? 2- how often do you clean, wash, sanitize the filter? 3- how much reptisafe per each 25g? 4- what happened to your other turtle?? Thanks for posting this video and I hope Colo is treating you well.
@LongLiveYourTurtle
@LongLiveYourTurtle 3 года назад
I could have sworn I answered this already, RU-vid must have forgot to post it! But I can't pass up such good questions! I never try to do a full water change unless i am changing up the tank. No reason to risk my beneficial bacteria that live in the sand or that live in the filter where a lack of water might kill them. I do a 50-75% water change about every 1 - 2 months. I do a filter cleaning about every 2 months. I use the recommended amount of reptisafe it recommends on the bottle (sorry nothing fancy there). Crackers and Moses both live in my indoor turtle pond now. Check it out here! - studio.ru-vid.comH8I33HL9MFE/edit Colo is great, thanks for asking! Hope you are doing well. Thanks for the comment!

HELPPP! We just had to upgrade our turtles from a 40 gallon (with a drain at the bottom) to a 75 gallon (no drain). I need to do our first 100% water change. My tank is on the first floor of my house and we can easily drain it outside into our backyard year round (I’m in FL). Our outdoor hose easily can reach to our tank to fill it. Please send me links on what to buy for easy drainage. TIA!
@LongLiveYourTurtle

Hey! There are a lot of options! I would get a pool pump (pump would go in your aquarium) or an inline pump (pump is outside of the aquarium). The second option is more expensive but will let you get all of the water out of the tank. The first option will leave a little that will need to be scooped out. If you just use your hose and start a syphon you could get probably 98% of the water out. Good luck!

I dont use my mouth to start the syphon. Instead I run the water into the tank first and then unplug it from the tap so the water just starts flowing from the tank to the drain. No need put that dirty pipe my mouth. I wonder How does all these youtube turtle owner have such clean water. My turtles makes the tank dirty in every 2-3 days 😩 I have stopped using filter because they dont keep the water clean and its a lot of work just to clean the filters itself. So i just do water changes every 3 days using syphon method. Now thinking about aquaponics 😉
