Amazing tutorial! More like this please, composition basics, simplifying, shading shapes in watercolor! Great teaching! Do have a book with these basics?
GREAT VIDEO.. thankyou! I like to draw and sometimes paint outdoors. I struggle a lot to decifer tonal values, because when i look at all the different colours in the scene, colour seems to dominate for me..... Even though I do see shades in the colours ... I cannot seem to be able to group the different colours together into their shared tonal value groups.

What an insightful Video. Before it was over I had my pad and pencil out. Ty for Sharing your experience and knowledge. I'm going to go see your Videos on the link you provided to another person in these comments. Ty
This is really helpful as I always paint straight away not even thinking about the source of light. But from now on I will make sure to do a monochrome study first before going to the final canvas. Thank you so much!
This video is just what I was looking for! I'm done with the 1,000 hour dry on dry paintings I almost never finish. I'm so excited again to simplify using this strategy. Value studies make for valuable future work.

Thank you Paul for bringing this tutorial to us. It's really helpful. I am new to watercolors and you can understand how important this lecture for a beginner. Really really thank you for putting your valuable efforts.
Thank you very much for the great lesson! My only question is: to me the greenish field is lower in value (darker) than the lighthouse, but you painted the lighthouse darker than the field. Would you tell me why you chose to do it that way? It works well as it is, but I wonder how it will be if you do it differently.
