Great looking onions Danny! We did some trials this year with onions we grew from seeds and plants we bought. And like you, the ones grown from seed just seem to do better. The Texas Legend always does well for us over in here in GA, and we like it because it stores a little longer than some of the flatter, granex onions. However, the Sweet Harvest variety did produce the largest onions from any of the varieties we planted.

Diatomaceous Earth - food grade DE - is supposed to be very uncomfortable for ants and can be put right on the soil under the cloth. It is a fossilized algae and the microscopic shards get all into the insects' hard bodies and cause them problems, but people eat DE as a dewormer, for the same reason. The food grade is food safe.

Ya know that black fabric is a form of Eden method without the wood chips. Paul Gautschi said as long as the soil is covered that's what important. To protect the top soil. Now the way he does his builds the soil over a long time. Even so as long as it's a cover on it, anything will work. Now those fire ants ain't no joke. I sat in a nest of those in a tobacco patch when I was a kid. Lesson learned 👍

Down here in Texas we also have fire ants pretty bad. The secret is to apply a good amount of dried molasses over your affected area. this works from gardens to suburban lawns. they hate the stuff and will get away from it as fast as they can. you can find this at alot of feeds stores. I hope this helps. orange oil and water works too but will burn the roots of whatever its near

I came up in SeTX and have spent a fair amount of time warning my northern and west coast friends away from fire ant mounds when in their territory, then explaining myself at length. Usually a small nearby stick comes in handy for demonstration purposes. It's always wild to see the look on their face when I describe how fast we learn how to strip when we're 'in ants' especially once they see how fast those boogers can swarm. Those onions look fantastic, and impervious to your fire ant invasion, thank goodness. ~

Try old fashioned grits, not the instant grits. But sprinkle those around and those ants will eat the grits and when they get drinks of water those grits swell up inside them and kill them. It worked for my family when we lived in Florida and had to deal with those god awful fire ants. Alot of natives swore by it and we tried and it worked. Beautiful onions

Just trim the tops back on the broke over ones and they will do fine. Same with the Texas ones trim them all back a good bit and it will kick in the bulb growth. Only thing you loosing is some green and you can chop that up and put in freezer. Plus I'm sure you got a stash of green onion growing anyway.

I've grown in woven plastic for a couple of years, with great success. I garden a good hundred miles North of the 44th parallel. Our saving grace is that during the growing season we have a much longer amount of daylight. My Celebrity tomatoes did exceptionally well in plastic. With your suggestion, I'm going to plant my onions in plastic. It'll be around Memorial Day before I get to plant. We're heaving heavy frost almost every night.

The onions look so good!!! About the ants, I have heard they don’t like cinnamon. Also, I saw on RU-vid a lady pokes skewers down into their tunnels and that makes them leave. A friend of mine put baking soda on the den and poured vinegar on it. I’ve heard people put rice on the dens. After they eat the rice they bloat and die. Who knows but might be worth a try.

Here is how; cut 4 large onions into chunks and put in a dutch oven with 2 T of butter, a pinch of thyme and 2 bay leaves. fry until they start looking translucent then add 1 cup of sweet red wine. simmer this almost where all the liquid is evaporated. take out the bay leaves and add 2 T of flour and cook that stirring for about 3 minutes. Add turkey broth. simmer for 20 minutes. Now I don't put the bread on top with cheese but I do serve with very crunchy bread. you will be amazed.
