Easy Way to Make a Promo Video for Solo Musicians and Bands

If there's one thing you need to get gigs as a solo musician (or band), and to also promote shows, it's a promotional video.
You're less likely to get booked if the venue owner doesn't know what you sound like. You have to showcase what you can do.
This is also a great strategy for promoting gigs that you have scheduled. I give you this example in this video of how I made a short montage from the last show at a particular venue to promote an upcoming show there.
***Let me know if the comments what type of content you want and questions you have that are centered around playing live shows, especially solo gigs!

Great video. What is the best ways to send demos to a perspective gig or establishment? RU-vid, thumb drive, CD, ETC???????
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth Год назад
I created a page on my website for this: www.jasonstallworth.com/live/ But you can also send venues links to a video you posted on FB or RU-vid. I wouldn't bother with thumb drives for CDs as that's an extra step they have to take to listen. Make it as easy s possible

I have watched your "getting going" video and loved it... great advise! I would however, like to see a representative, real time set list(s) based on your genre... I am also of that "age" and love to play the oldies as well as blues, and romantic slows. I also wondered if you use MIDI to guide your equipment? I have a number of MIDI capable gear that I can control with foot pedals but programming this is time consuming... I want your "practical" advise on this use.
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth Год назад
I do have a set list video but it doesn't get into the specifics regarding songs. I'm going to be making more content for live gigging, so that's coming soon! I don't use any MIDI or any type of programming. I like to keep everything simple. I do use a looper only to loop a rhythm so that I can solo over it. I'm got a video coming soon on that too

Thanks for making this. It’s been extremely helpful. We’ve been gigging for almost a full year now and everyone says we need more online presence. Also I love that I can now send each venue a tool to promote them and us! It’s been a small hurtle that we’ve finally moved past and your help is what made it happen. Can’t wait to get more out. I’ll probably have a promo video like this done tomorrow just in time to promote this weekends gig. Thanks again!

That tip to use Keynote to put together titling pages is excellent. Thank you! I use Reaper to edit video just because I'm comfortable in it and it has great audio capabilities being a DAW, but it actually isn't a bad bare-bones video editor too but the titling always leaves me flat. I like the idea to use Keynote. That way I can import in my graphics, logo etc and have nice transitions from my video. I have been having trouble with the video on my iphone 7 cutting out on the audio as though some sort of noise gate is kicking in. Voice Memos doesn't do that. I have tried turning stereo off, turning on mono, I don't have the background noises option on so it's not that. It makes me really want an external mic though because the audio I get is unusable.
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth Год назад
I do often use the audio from my iPhone but sometimes I like to record a direct signal, so I'll bring my laptop which has recording software (Presonus Studio One) and connect that to my board. There are some other options out there for direct recording, like Zoom products. This way you have a crystal clear audio track and can just sync that with the video in your editing program.

Hi! I love listening to you talking, it's so interesting and engaging. Please, can you make reactions to live shows? Like mistakes people make with examples. I've watched a dozen of your videos or so, they've been really helpful! But it will certainly stick to memory if you also showcase your reaction to other people performing.

Thank you. I don't get a chance to go to many shows as I'm usually playing my own. I will soon be playing my own music (latest album) live with a band and will have a video on that, too. Also, I just released the first lyric video to the new album: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VZMPCsIvE2M.html

Thanks, any suggestions on this are really helpful. I've been a SAM (Solo Acoustic Musician) for a while but more recently developed a One Man Band Live Looping Act. I've started booking aggressively and played a lot of places that I never had but I feel not having a demo reel has started to hold me back a bit. The idea of recording at an open mic is a great one. While I see a lot of other SAM's that have reels that clearly aren't at venues (and are still doing quite well) I agree with you that it looks better.
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth Год назад
Yeah, definitely capture a few short videos of parts of songs and build up your social media presence. This gives a positive perception to the venue owners and you'll also be surprised how many of your followers will show up at your gigs as you grow!

Great video and excellent delivery. What do you find a more effective way of building a relationship with a venue: In person or email/phone?
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 2 года назад
Thank you. I believe it’s best to show up in person when possible. But oftentimes I’ll email the venue and also include a webpage where they can listen to a recent show. Be prepared to follow up several times. I’m talking to one of my booking agents, he tells me that he gets so many musicians reaching out to him that it’s almost impossible to get back to them all. So he patient but also consistent. Just one or two emails oftentimes won’t work. Another way I’ve gotten gigs and have helped others get gigs is if you have a friend that plays out, see if they’ll let you play a couple songs on their break. This way the staff and hopefully the owner or manager can hear you.

I use Premiere Pro and After Effects. I use a Shure SM-58 mic. Good directional mic. I don't do shows though LOL. I always work in 1920 x 1080 and downgrade if necessary.

I've never used Premiere but it seems many folks do. I'm looking to upgrade to Final Cut Pro at some point as it's similar to iMovie and I already know how to use that well...so no huge learning curve

Great video Jason. I'm into my sixth decade of guitar and gigs and even managed to steal a living for a few years in Sydney back in the day. Now over here in South Florida with a trio that includes my wife playing small venues. We use tracks for bass and drums but do guitars, keys and all vocals live. We are definitely behind in the promotional material side of things and I will use all your great information to try and rectify that. Thanks again. Paul

Do you rehearse a lot for these as I know you have loads a songs to play?
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 2 года назад
That's a great question. I did when I first started doing this regularly. I didn't really know any of the songs and I transpose most songs to a key that fits my vocal range, so it was like learning x2! But as I've been doing this, I find myself only rehearsing new songs that I'm adding to the list. My true saving grace is having the iPad up there, which is mainly for the lyrics.

You, sir, are a natural in front of the camera - great video! Do you have any suggestions for avoiding copyright issues when posting cover songs on RU-vid (or similar platforms)? Thanks!
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 2 года назад
Dude, I wish there was a way around that. The best thing you can do is only post short clips of songs and make it like a montage. Even then, sometimes you'll get a copyright notice. Which isn't that bad, but it just means you won't receive the revenue from the ads as it will go to the label. So I make sure that I only post covers every now and then and not every video. And I mainly use those for FB and IG to get engagement there.

@@jasonstallworth I was flagged a couple of times by YT, but afterwards I started adding attributions at the end of my video descriptions, giving credit to the song writer & publisher. Haven't been flagged since, but that might just be dumb luck! You are right - the notice itself is no big deal, I would just hate to get one on a client's video!! Thanks for the response!

Glad this helped! And I have one unnecessary step in the video. I later found that with this hoard you don’t need an interface because the board is an interface so I now just connect my laptop directly to tue board and set the DAW input/output source to be the board. Hopefully that made sense!
