Flights from Glasgow international to Birmingham airport have been flown by easyJet since 2019 however with people talking more and more about the impact of short haul aviation on the environment and short haul flights being banned in France. Should the UK follow suit?
Should EasyJet be flying such short flights between UK mainland Airports or should there be better more affordable rail infrastructure links? Should airlines like Easyjet operate routes from airports like Edinburgh and Glasgow over such short distances to other uk mainland airports like Birmingham airport?
For context:
Flight Cost (Glasgow to Birmingham airport - Easyjet): £22
Rail Journey for the same date with 1 change: £53
This video isn't in anyway a criticism of EasyJet. I do really love EasyJet it is one of the airlines I use the most and in my opinion offer excellent value for money.

What do you think? Should Rail transport be give priority over short haul distances or do you think it's important to have both options available? Personally I love both Rail and flying! 😁

We have rubbish rail inferstructure, due to year of underfunding, so the critics of the critcs are correct, however we're only going to get better inferstructure if people use it (so it's a bit of a chicken and egg problem). I used to fly a lot (it's cheaper than by train, for a lot of routes) but if I can I try to travel via train (it's just more fun, you can get work done and just less stressful)

Personally I love rail and grudgingly put up with flying. If there were a rail -and-sail option between Canada and the UK I’d choose it every time. Assuming it’s affordable.

I agree with you 100%, morally I’d rather go by rail but often it isn’t the most convenient.

As someone who used to live around Birmingham, the plane to Glasgow in 75 minutes is a marvel to behold. Long may it fly, and discount services are to be commended, with the increase in rail travel every year, particularly now as there is talk of strike action. It means escaping Brummagem is made simple and affordable, which can't be bad.

Avanti is supposed to be upgrading this route in the future (new trains and hopefully shorter journey times). Flybe used to operate BHX-GLA several times a day. Rail has a big future but as you say a strike is threatened ...

It’s actually really useful for connections to places like Coventry, Northampton and Milton Keynes. I use this frequently as an alternative to the train especially if I am on a short overnight trip. The train isn’t good enough and is often too dear.

It’s useful route as direct trains between Glasgow and Birmingham still haven’t gone back to every 2 hours. One thing I’ve noticed is the easyJet schedule on the Glasgow to Birmingham route is not great with less flights than Flybe did and some days with one flight

I used this service in July to head to Birmingham so my Dad could pick up my brother and I on a trip to visit our Gran The flight was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than a rail alternative, and meant we didn’t have to get up so early/even head down the night before (Especially as busses in my area are pretty fickle later in the night, I’d have to get from my village, to Falkirk, to Edinburgh.) So I would say it made things much simpler! Even if our trip back led to us getting delayed…and catching Covid (But we’re alright now of course)

Its a very pleasant flight for what it is intended for, no real complaints. Your right about the rail prices.

I’m from Stirlingshire and have lots of family in Birmingham. I am constantly on the Edinburgh & Glasgow to Birmingham routes as it’s easier for me to travel rather than coach or train due to the fact that I have mobility issues.

Birmingham airport does have short and cheap rail connection into the centre of Birmingham. To me the hassle of flying from Glasgow is getting there early morning , expensive taxi or expensive parking

Another cracking video featuring my home airport, sadly BHX isn’t the airport it was in the 90s and early 2000’s. Looking at the departures you can understand why they’ve removed the ‘International’ from their name. Interestingly, a quick check of train fares, shows the cheapest at £36.20 and the most expensive at £105.80 with a journey time of approx. 4hrs 40mins. I too like travel by train and air. Not yet experienced a Neo so I know what my choice would be. Keep up the excellent reports Dom - love the fact that you’re not one of these that ‘only travel in first class’.

I wouldn’t say they have removed the international from there name down to the fact they are slowly growing again with Emirates operating 2 daily flights to Dubai with them all having over 370 pax on each time. Air India operate a weekly flight to Amritsar and are looking to add more to this service along with a service to Delhi and Birmingham being one of only two airports air India fly’s to in the uk. TUI has daily flights to us and Caribbean so I definitely wouldn’t say Birmingham isn’t international, along with the other 25 or so airlines that fly there.

I like to create an experience that I feel most people would do. Plus all the money comes out of my pocket and I do not ask airlines or anyone for freebies, plus I'm not exactly loaded.

I’m using this service (in the other direction) in a couple of days. This will be he first time with EasyJet but I’ve flown the same route before on a number of occasions with the original Flybe. It’s much more convenient and quicker than the train and cheaper too. The thing is I wasn’t travelling from city centre to city centre, I was travelling from Troon where I live to other places in the West Midlands. I could park the car at Glasgow Airport and hire a car at Birmingham Airport. Neither is quite as practical at Central or New Street Stations. So yes, well done EasyJet for taking over an important air link after Flybe went belly up. I wish they would start an East Midlands - Glasgow link too.

Hello Dom, bear in mind that train ban in France isn't all it seems. The ban applies to flights using ORY and not those using CDG. Just look at how many AF flights there are between LYS and CDG ...even though this route is served by direct TGVs. Sadly most media do not check the facts and just regurgitate the headline.
@WorldWide_Dom
@WorldWide_Dom 2 года назад
I was aware of the AF exemption though I always thought it was due to the French state being one of the largest shareholders so that the could more easily regulate short flights, interesting, will need to look more into this. I'm hoping that this isn't a trend that catches on as i feel its always better to innovate and evolve than just cutting or banning.

@@WorldWide_Dom I can send you the link to the piece I wrote on this subject. It was a govt decision and was political. If AF were to cut these flights then it would receive billions in aid from the govt. However AF continues to operate short haul into CDG as these feed its international network ...and customers can still book short domestic flights on these CDG services.

The main issue i have with rail vs flying is the cost difference. Would be much better in my opinion if the two were actually competing with one another.
@missloopsalot

I did this flight in half term when I went from Northampton to Glasgow to visit my aunty and have a bit of time away from planning for this term/ catching up on work etc. For me it wasn’t so much about the time difference, it was the cost. I paid about £75 return flights from Birmingham to Glasgow and £15 return train tickets from Northampton to Birmingham International, whereas the train would have cost me over £275. With the price of everything going up so much, it was an absolute no brainer. I am all for going greener but the government need to make it more affordable. Same as cars - I would absolutely happily have an electric car if I could afford the initial £30,000 to have the same size of car that I have now for a fraction of the initial price. Yes fuel prices are rising but it is still cheaper than that initial electric outset.

Birmingham to Glasgow or Edinburgh is at least four hours on a train perhaps nearer to five hours last trip I did. I would be interested in seeing what you actual flight time was. Scheduled time against actual flying times does vary.

The main thing is AFFORDABILITY. For the majority the affordability is a huge issue. Train fares are extortionately expenses , slow and much worse than nationalised France
@WorldWide_Dom
@WorldWide_Dom 2 года назад
Exactly, in a 100% privatized model rail is always going to be more expensive than air travel as there is a lot more infrastructure to maintain. A lot of changes need to be made in the UK rail industry and a lot of investment is needed. Countries like France as you say is better at rail and I think should be a model for the UK rail industry going forward.

@finlat1238

It’s just the cost, for 3 adults it cost me about £150 return with easyJet (BHX->GLA) whereas it would’ve been OVER £400, some rail tickets even went up to £800 for standard! It just doesn’t make any sense to go on the train when it’s less than half the price, quicker and in my opinion a more enjoyable experience.

I always think rail in the UK just needs to be cheaper if it is going to realistically compete with airlines over long distances.

For domestic flights in the UK you do require some form of photo ID, Each airline sets their own rules though, some require a passport as part of their T&C's. I always just use my passport so its never been an issue for me.

Glasgow Central to Birmingham by train 4 and a half hours. Driving from Glasgow to Birmingham 5 hour 40 minutes. So the flight using the French Logick and reasoning it is a good flight. 1 hour 10 minutes compared to over 4 and a half. Makes sense
