Man. I made some of the 3D animations playing on that pixel display and it’s so trippy to always see them in the background. I’m honored. Love your stuff!

what is this device?

My first thought was, “why are they worried about what sounds to put in it, just let us put our own in.” If they do that, they could rename this, “just take my money…”
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 5 месяцев назад
This was my first thought as well. The WAV format has a specification for sample loops, just let us use that, mount this keyboard like a USB stick, drop the samples in there with pre-defined filenames, disconnect, play.

If it had a standard MIDI mini jack, I would buy one. I can think of all sorts of stuff to use this as a controller for. Great ambient piece at the end there! Getting some Pete Namlook vibes off that! ❤

It took me a bit to figure out what layout they used for the keyboard. It's a little crazy, but I like it. Interesting way to emphasize diatonic notes while still leaving (most) of the chromatic notes.
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 5 месяцев назад
Hi! The black keys are grey here, it's a full two octave keyboard. They are arranged from top left two right bottom, the middle row representing the a3-e4 notes (or whatever octave you're in). As you're implying, this layout enables you to play a set major chords easily by hitting the "vertical rows". Also, playing some "geometrical figures" will result in mostly good-sounding harmonies as well.
@sound.workshop
@sound.workshop 5 месяцев назад
@@mr_floydst yes I understood that, but thank you for clarifying. I enjoy seeing people rethink note layouts. On Wiggler I only included 8 keys which cover one octave of a user selectable scale. I like how this layout is chromatic while still making it easier to play in one key. The thing that confused me at first is how the lowest notes are on the top row. I personally would have done it the other way around.

I have to admit this is kind of cool. I don’t think for eveeything but as someone who loves generative ambient I could see me using it in several ways

Thanks for watching! I think it's got some things going for it - a battery powered two octave MIDI controller with built PCM sounds and bluetooth support. But as we humans are, once we see an idea, we see how to make it even better ;-)

So is this going to be open source, at least the firmware? That would be quite tempting indeed. Otherwise, I guess it depends on the price mainly, of which I can find no mention yet.
@mr_floydst

Thanks for watching! I don't expect this to be open source, but it isn't impossible users will be able to change the sounds at some time in the future (sorry for being vague, but the answer I got on this question wasn't definitive either)

In my defense, I made this video given the information that the 1s will be "under $100" and "with 20+ sounds". While that's still not exactly cheap for a device like this, I thought this might have it's place as a small battery powered bluetooth / MIDI controller with a sample player (that's not a thing that exists otherwise). We'll see if the "early access" price will become permanent or not.
@joshmoneymusic
@joshmoneymusic 5 месяцев назад
Only 10-20 sounds for a modern digital device is just confounding. 100 quality, curated sounds minimum would make it interesting as a portable sound module but as it stands it’s a pass.

I followed this project after watching your video a few days ago. Now they've announced the price or at least the ballpark. $229 or $249 full price. Around $120 for the first three days. $120 should have been the full price, and it's a tough sell even then. Since it would get dusty in an actual pocket, I don't see any advantages over the nanokey studio. Sure the nanokey studio doesn't have sound, but this doesn't have velocity or the other features of the studio. And I'd be using synths on my phone anyway. Once it hits over $229 I'd rather get a Woovebox or something from Liven. I wish them luck but I think they've missed the mark.

@@mr_floydst I wish I were. $60 early bird and $120 full price would have been intriguing. But over $200 there's just too much competition for me to see it having the legs needed for them to support it long enough to mature.

@@mr_floydst Those are the early bird prices. It would be totally reasonable if it stayed there. But at least for now they are claiming that is 50% off of the final price.

@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 5 месяцев назад
Since I made this video, my Facebook stream is plastered with ads for their Kickstarter campaign as well ;-) How did you manage to buy one already? Did you support their campaign? In my opinion, this thing works as advertised, and adding that "exchange the sounds yourself" and e.g. an arpeggiator would make this a nice thing to have (if the price is right). It's battery powered and has bluetooth support and also is a multitimbral polyphonic sample playback ... thing. ;-)
@dyscotopia

@@mr_floydst I don't have one of these! But I do have an odd ball, which is a fun little controller, but it only worked with their own very limited app. Apparently you can hook it up to Ableton, but it's not something I've managed. I do get ads for this constantly with my dream girl playing it, but that only makes me more suspect

Looks cool and i have been looking for something with this form factor and functionality to go alongside the Dirtywave m8. One thing that would make a difference to me would be midi on a 3.5mm jack so i could connect straight to the m8 - sadly the m8 does not support usb midi and would need a usb midi host to connect to this.
