It had special significance amongst mystics, but these days "real" absinthe is hard to come by, due to the poison element. So, it's more that these days it's treated like a thing that'll kill you (like some hard drugs are treated to... and cigarettes. we all know smoking once is death, certainly), but it didn't used to be just a somewhat special drink.
