"A memory you've never had." 😂 Very cool, informative, and super entertaining. We're team sunflower seeds for sure! Might try this with one of our mammoth sunflowers. More epic cooking videos please! 🤗☀️
When I was young I would go fishing with my dad and we always had sunflower seeds. And for two weeks during the summer I would get to stay with his parents and again, sunflower seeds. I don't eat them now as I watch my salt intake but I do like the 'peeled' ones on occasion. Good memories. When dad passed, I placed a fishing lure and a bag of sunflowers in his casket.
I've eaten one raw, because the deer were eating them and I wanted to know why. It was fine, I can see how roasting it and removing the flowers would make for better texture. Plus what isn't improved by olive oil and garlic!
I tried this a couple months ago. It tastes like artichokes to me with a slight nuttiness. Team sunflower seeds. I just roasted 2 pounds of seed I harvested and just stood there cracking and eating at the stove for no reason at all. All of a sudden I looked down and I had a pile of shells 😄
Omg...You're killing me! It's 3 am am I'm about to hobble through my garden in the dark to snatch one of my sunflowers! 😂😂 My artichokes are just budding (so tiny and cute!) and I've been craving them...I'll try to wait for daylight but going to be hard! This is such an exciting discovery!🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
I've never heard of this. But I had two mammoth sunflowers. I harvested all the seeds and just ate them for days, no salt until they were all gone. Amazing.
Gotta try this! Very interesting! I would love to see someone do a nutrition breakdown/assessment! I eat sunflower seeds when I have to drive a long distance. It helps keep you awake.
Quite interesting. Someone said once the buds could be cooked to be like artichokes. I don’t know why I never tried. Also, since you have gas range you could singe it before adding the oil, to get roasted flavor, then add oil garlic, cook it in a covered skillet in very low heat. A sprinkling of paprika and rosemary you add the scent.
@@soumyasharma832 actually this year they were a little smaller and a bit on the bitter side because of the extremely dry conditions - but still had that -"earthy green" flavor
My daughter and I are so excited to try this next season! We are sitting in the cold of Iowa (zone 5b) in January but dreaming of our spring garden in our new, much bigger yard.
Awesome video!!! Team sunflower all the way 🌻 This looks like something my kids (10 and 15) would LOVE ! I am excited to give it a try the next time we grow our own.
Better way. I always told my kids; "only the gardner and the cook can play with food". One thing I like about your channel is that you take a holistic approach to food, the growing, cooking and consumption
'A memory you never had!" Have to remember that one! That was enjoyable to watch. Yes 👍 for sunflower seeds! It's an art cracking and eating them with no hands.
I want to try this, but I think i will let the garlic and oil seep for an hour or so, same with the herbs and oil. Good idea about using the foil, maybe after 20 mins remove the foil and let the top crisp up for crunch...can't wait until I can try this with my sunflowers
Always fun to try what may seem like an unlikely food source. This year I harvested hosta when it first emerged, just did a little stir fry with some chicken and veggies. Was actually good. Yes shocking. Best part is the plant sent up new shoots so I still had a plant.
Team Sunflower. You're right, it's like the action connects you to every point in time and space. In that moment everything seems to fall away. I think it's because the action of eating Sunflower seeds requires you to be present in the moment (at least for me). Also, getting that one magical tasting seed makes it all worth it as well lol.
It is MANDATORY for me to have sunflower seeds and/or pumpkin seeds in my car at all times. It calms me down and keeps part of my brain entertained during monotonous traffic or travel! I highly recommend it.
My son Cyrus and I have been binging your podcast. We recently moved to Tucson from Santa Barbara-two drastically different growing zones. We have Sunflower seedlings awaiting their Birdie’s container. We are building a Sonoran Bistro Garden in our front courtyard. We also are brooding baby Red chicks-love their green eggs!!! Keep up the great work! You are helping so many of us reduce our carbon footprint, grow more of what we eat and most importantly, have fun with plants!!!
I'm in AZ too! Be sure to check out Growing in the Garden - great way to learn about AZ desert gardening. And WestWind Seeds are right in your backyard!
I am an extreme foodie senior, and I had no idea you could do that. I learned such a cool thing to do with my granddaughters so excited to try this. Thank you for sharing with us.❤😮
Brlliant... As far as eating the seeds, I enjoy eating them whole including the shells. I slow down and chew them well. There's good fiber and dietary fats you get from them. This was very inspiring...
So my child asked me if he could eat the sunflowers I grew this year; me not sure, found this video. My sunflowers are tiny compared to these on the video. I did pretty much what you did, made a vinegar, spread on top, wrapped in tin foil with a small base of oil in the wrap. Honestly, the taste was freaking great. I thought it looked like broccoli and the seeds were all white under the yellow flower buds. Thanks for the video and teaching me a new great food!
I enjoyed this video a lot! It was unexpectedly very relaxing. Also not a pro but really enjoyed the plating 👏🏼 I need to try this with my sunflowers!!
I've been eating sunflower seeds since age 6. I still remember the moment I managed to get the hang of it and started eating the seeds with both hands. Unsalted sunflower seeds are never missing from my house.
I've never seen anyone eat a sunflower head before. How cool is that! Thanks so much for sharing! This was so interesting and informative 🌻🌱 I love scraping the little flowers off, its so satisfying for some reason lol
This was so awesome to watch you two chowing down on the sunflower heads😄 So cool. Would have never thought you could eat the entire head. I'll have to try this for sure!
Thank you for this!! Just heard about eating them and then didn't want to deal with grill. Also love you tried eating all the parts. I'm looking forward to making these! I'm using some smaller sunflowers though so more personal sized!
I used to grow giant sunflowers every year but a day after they opened I would find them headless and faced down in the soil. One day I caught a squirrel dragging one away. I’m trying them again just so I can roast one. Looks tasty 😋
About 6 sunflower seeds in, I’m exhausted. Tons of work for a tiny payoff. 😆 This looks amazing and might be an incentive to grow sunflowers next year. I wonder if instead of oil and garlic if it would work well with a softened butter garlic mixture. Might be easier to really get that coverage.
thanks! i get so many volunteer sunflowers in my yard from the neighbour's bird feeders and from other neighbours' sunflower projects. i'll hafta try this. plus, LOVE you and jacques on camera. now i know...
Ate seeds growing up. Loved them. My mom stopped smoking and it was her way of transitioning through that. After a few years, she would also eat them on her way home from graveyard shift to stay awake.
I'm totally with you Kevin, for sure a zen moment. I have ADHD so it kind of gives me the ability to fidget while also eating something and having my hands free to do other things. It's the same feeling as chewing gum. Very relaxing and helps focus my mind
Sunflowers are my favorite flower in general and I also enjoyed eating the seeds. OMG, especially if they’re flavored seeds with spice. I eat them like my country uncles did when I was a little girl. Put a few in at a time and get all the good flavors or even just salt off then crack the shells, spit out the shells, and eat the nuts. I have a large produce garden as well which includes two different sunflowers this year instead of just the Russian variety I planted last year, which was great too! I can’t wait to try cooking and eating the whole thing.
I tried this last year, but the seeds were a little too mature… I, uh, ate a lot of fibre that night. 😂 I like how Jacques said the sunflower back reminded him of artichoke-you can absolutely eat sunflower buds as an artichoke replacement!
I love sunflower seeds! Definitely Zen moments eating them! You described his eating them so well. Also it was great learning about eating sunflowers this way.
Thanks for sharing this, that looks really good. And I love that you got everything from homegrown plants. I love sunflower seeds, I hate taking off the shell :D Flavored sunflower seeds are great. Actually, one time in Singapore, we found chocolate-covered sunflower seeds! They were tasty.
I was thinking of my fastball days & eating sunflower seeds and then you mentioned baseball ... I'm like, YES, that's totally what I think of regarding the seeds! So cool.
From a Mediterranean background i feel like sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and watermelon seeds. Are a part of my life because I remember hours of eating them, or opening the capsule and saving the seed. just so i can eat all of the seeds the seeds at the end. And the joy of getting to seeds in one capsule.
I do not like to taste of sunflower seeds after they have been dried and roasted and salted even, but I bet I would like this! I'll have to try it, now, too!
I'm watching this while snacking on sunflower seeds 😂 my hubby and I always snack on them while watching a movie or a show. They have replaced all the movie time snacks we always have at least a few packs at home
Just as I was typing I think it would taste like artichoke Jacques said it. We had a Garden growing up and the year I moved away to go to college we grew sunflowers. My dear sweet mom harvested and took the hulls off of one and sent me the bag of them. I may have to give this a go.
I’m going to grow sunflowers just so I can try this! Great idea to wrap it in foil. I think I’d going to use that method, and finish them off on the grill!🌻🌻🌻
In Spain it’s very common to eat sunflower seeds. In remember the outdoor cinema where we went on vacation and the floor had a layer of the peel of sunflower seeds.
