Happy Friday Fam! I almost didn't post this video because I was nervous about the subject matter and this story is very personal- but I feel like it's important for you all that are following me on this journey to see where I'm coming from and the mistakes I've made that have led me to being truly healthy in my body & in my brain. Mental health is a huge aspect of overall health & in the past, I've sacrificed my mental health while on a mission to achieve what I thought was "optimal health."
I now think that dogmatic diets can be very dangerous. Obviously, many diets, including the ones I mention in this video (SCD, GAPS, AIP, Keto, Intermittent Fasting, etc) can help some people deal with symptoms of illness. I'm not saying that these diets are never useful. But I do think it's important to undertake these strict diets with care, with professional guidance, and with a plan in place to move away from restriction once the symptoms are abated. I also think it's dangerous to choose a very restrictive diet modality with the sole goal of losing weight. Restrictive diets aren't sustainable long-term & though they can be useful, I think that your ultimate goal needs to be focused mostly on building a healthy, sustainable lifestyle that allows you to balance being healthy while also being able to be relaxed about food.
Finally, if your diet feels like a cult, it's not a good lifestyle choice. Everyone's body is unique and you need to have the freedom to do what works best for YOU. If you feel like you are going to be excommunicated from a community because you are craving a carb or a hamburger, that community is not helping you feel your best. Your body and your intuition should always be your compass.
