Life is easier if you know a local! My new friend Rex takes me out to some authentic Shanghainese restaurants. He helps me navigate the city and find authentic vegan and gluten free foods I can eat and love!
I hope you enjoy our day of eating!

I am only vegetarian. However, I always recommend temple restaurants for vegan travellers in China. They have very reasonablly priced and well made vegan Chinese food, and they have very authentic local flavor. In Beijing, I know Lama temple has one in the Hutong across the street from the temple entrace. In Shanghai, I have been to the one behind the most famour temple in the city center (you know the name, it just escaped my toung.) I think there is one in Tanjin, and the temple even sells their prepackaged vegan food in supermarkets. I am sure many temples around China have restaurants like that. I highly recommend those, and part of your spending will go to the donation.

well, as a local shanghainese, and Cantonese grandparents (they moved to shanghai in 1930's), actually people in guangdong, hongkong and macau, like sweet soy milk too. they also put some ginger in it.
@melissa_renee
@melissa_renee Год назад
Oooo ginger! That would be so good. I didn't like the smokey flavor. I wonder if they all have that.
@CycOp
@CycOp Год назад
The smoky flavor is from the high heat of wood fire that caused burnt bottom. Many modern breakfast eateries use electric cooker that eliminates the burnt smell. You can also buy machines that will extract soybean juice and cook to drinkable soy milk (soy milk cannot be drank raw) without the burnt smell.

What a great theme and loved this video! I think the first dish that looked like soft tofu is what people in the north call 'tofu brain,' in case I didn't catch the name. The flavor sure comes from the gravy that can vary. In the past, I have had this dish with mushroom and tigerlily gravy and it was delicious. Sesame balls are great! Some vendors do put more sweet bean paste in them. I see you didn't try the You Tiao, which looks like a fried cruller, and it goes with the soy milk. You may like it.:)
@melissa_renee
@melissa_renee Год назад
Thank you so much for watching! And yes the cruller looks so good but I'm also gluten free so I wasn't able to eat that. Unless it's made of rice and then that would work!

I was shocked by the price in Shanghai. My city is Nanchang and the vegetarian buffet here is 18yuan, all you can eat and there are many choices. Most of them are old people, monks and playing Buddhist songs. It gives me peace of mind. Maybe you should go to a vegetarian cafeteria once! When I was a child, I also went to the temple to eat vegetarian food, but I was not allowed to shout and make noise there. IMAO, it's a place where rules and regulations are more respected.

I don't know if you noticed that there are very few fat people in China. Because the food here is mostly vegetarian. So being a vegetarian in China doesn't have to worry about food at all. You can eat a different vegetarian dish every day anywhere in China. And don't worry about not having enough

Most of Chinese people do are very kind and frenidly,but this guy doesnot look like a shanghaiese for me to be honest,there is a debate sweet or savory flavor based on silken tofu not on soy milk do hope you have a nice living in Shanghai❤

The police in China have no guns, only non-lethal stun guns and pepper spray, and the police cannot abuse guns. There are only 3 countries in Asia that ban guns, one is China, one is Singapore, and the other is Maldives.

I don’t think there is a debate about if one should put salt instead of sugar in soy milk- you just put sugar in it every time… The real debate is for the silken tofu (we call it tofu brains due to its texture). In the north people prefer spicy silken tofu- put hot peppers and hot sauce on the silken tofu; in the south, syrup/sugar is more preferred to be added on top of the tofu.

Prohibition of guns is the premise. Prohibition of guns can make gangs and drug dealers lose their combat effectiveness, and then the police can deal a fatal blow to them.

Your husband must be a person with high status in some foeign company located in China, for example like a manager or CEO, otherwise there is no reason for you to stay such a depressed country. No youtube, No outside world connection, no smile on people's face, everybody is thinking about their money, their interest, this is what a real Chinese society likes.
