We start with the funkiest Catholic Church you'll ever see, mosey to a Ming Dynasty Gate, then hike to the "No. 1 Most Beautiful Tower", and finally hoof it to one of city's top-rated restaurants. In between ... snacks! Join us for a walk and talk and eat in Guizhou Province's capital city.

Where I live in rural Japan, I can go over a month without seeing another caucasian....it is a two-edged sword as I sometimes enjoy being in the countryside but also long for the expat friends I had in the past. Was just wondering how much your dinner was....it looked very delicious.

Totally understand. I've thought about taking a teaching job in a rural area in China over the years, but I never pulled the trigger because I know myself -- I know that I'm too much of a city guy to pull it off. In the US, I worked at Southern Illinois University in a small town in the middle of corn fields and soy fields, and a 2 1/2 drive to the nearest real airport in St. Louis. You can feel isolated fast. And that was in my home country. ... As for the dinner, first of all I've never had such tender beef in a dry pot before. We went because on our walk Summer noticed the sign saying it was a top-rated place and had been on a few travel TV shows. If I remember right, it was 129RMB, or slightly less than US$20.

This is a much bigger city than the last two villages you visited!! You haven’t seen any other foreigners? When you are in Wu Han, do you see many other foreigners?

Guiyang is the capital city of Guizhou Province, and so it's a real city as opposed to the hill and valley villages we visited earlier on the trip. Still, it's not a huge city like Wuhan. It's got that kind of 1960s not-yet-totally-developed feel about it. As for the foreigners, I also don't see many in Wuhan these days -- but I do see some. China lost so many foreigners in the years since Covid began, and I don't know when they're going to come back.
