Eating Out in Victorian London (Fast Food for the Poor in the 19th Century)

Eating at a coffee house in the East End was dirt cheap, but at the price of a dirty and fetid atmosphere. Eating out cheap in 19th Century Victorian London didn’t mean eating well and it certainly wasn’t always healthy. The cooked meats could be tough, musty or tainted. And the coffee? Well, the name was no more than a misnomer, for the concoction that could be drunk with your crust of bread might look muddy like coffee, but be anything but: more likely a mix of chicory and plant refuse.

Ppl still live like this the world over as we haven’t learned a single thing about how to treat our indigent and poor working class ppl since then. It’s sad and unfortunate that the classes haven’t been inclined to help those less fortunate . Some share their wealth but most are greedy and could care less about this human suffering. It breaks my heart and makes me happy for the very little I do have but one just needs to walk down many low income state streets be it here in a city or a country anywhere in the world . We are a selfish society.

2022 and yesterday an MP berated the poor of the UK for not knowing how to cook a meal for 30p a day with ingredients given by a food bank. The same MP who claimed £219,000 in expenses alone last year.

I might agree with that MP that people need to learn to Cook from scratch, BUT... The boxes people get from Food Banks are not always what they project/promote and make look nice and complete in the ads. The food bank here, locally in my area in the US, ought to be investigated. Many of my customers (while delivering mail; people talk to me) got boxes from Food Bank, prepackaged, they'd just hand you a box. One young woman, (family of 4, incl 2 small children), rec'd in her box, (among other, usable things), a box of 6 five pound blocks of frozen sausage. A woman in her 80s rec'd 5 five pound bags of fresh peaches; another woman, also elderly, 2 mesh bags of 16 fresh limes each; while another couple got 7 four pound bags of sweet potatoes. Are Food Bank workers that freaking lazy to not divide things up? I'm sure the grocers and sausage makers donate their product in good faith that it will be distributed widely and evenly. But the way it is handed out by Food Bank merely ensures that if they don't share it out, give half away, it will go to waste. I don't know about Food Bank in the UK, but here, with the boxes they give out, even I might be hard-pressed to create a meal from the disparate collection of food in a box from Food Bank alone.

The accents really bring your tales to life! Very evocative. I don't live in the UK anymore, but its really shocking to see the direct comparisons nowadays there with Victorian times. A nation now with such endemic poverty that food banks are the norm, people having to work three jobs just to feed their kids, kids going without school dinners or not going to school at all because they have to care for parents or siblings. All whilst the government continue to treat the public purse like a cash machine and completely dismantle regulations and our rights. Its a shocking parallel.

My Grandma was born in 1898 and her husband died of Tuberculosis. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it must of been for her especially as she had a son with him. Obviously everyone had their place in those times. The woman in the home the man at work. Although I am very proud of my Grandparents. My Grandad my Grandma's 2nd Husband was a coal miner all his working life and was trapped in the mine many times. And my Grandma was a midwife.

It’s hard to imagine that this lifestyle was almost within living memory. My grandparents were alive during world war 1. My great grandfather, who I just remember, actually fought in WW1 in the household cavalry, he actually fought, on a horse. It was called Dolly Grey and got shot from under him while rescuing a senior officer, I have his medal

In America,in 1942, many men were rejected for service due to the fact that they were under weight or male nourished.

that was the british if im not mistaken started in world war 1 they found alot of their troops were underweight and stunted from lack of nutrition they then put meals in place at schools and pushed nutrition to get them back in fighting force. by time ww2 came around they were back up to weight Edit: not just weight but their height was affected from malnourishment

Also their bones where weak due to lack of nutrients especially calcium, which made them shorter. I've seen over the years elderly people doubled over with only a walking stick to assist them. (Rickets)

London's book you read from, The People Of The Abyss, is a fascinating read. Jack London set about to explore the conditions of the lives of those in the East End. He was a famous and best selling author, but like most other famous people of the pen, was not known by appearance, especially away from his home country. In order to fit in with the people whose lives he was examining, he outfitted himself with rough clothing from a second-hand store. He created the appearance of an American sailor down on his luck. The gold Sovereign mentioned had been sewn into the lining of his coat, to be used in emergency. His reporting had some effect on the sentiments of the socially liberal society, and moved some people to charity and lobbying for changes in laws. I read the book in the middle 1980s, and had an effect upon me that I remain grateful for. It reached me as an antidote to the writings of Ayn Rand, and began my turn into a decent human being that cares about the lives of others.
