Lo Bak Gou (萝卜糕, Luó Bo Gāo) or daikon cake or turnip cake is a must-have dish for some families (like mine) during Lunar New Year. In this festive celebration, different families have their own auspicious dish based on where they are from. My mom is Cantonese so lo bak gou is a dish we often eat for celebrations. This is because the word cake - 糕 in Chinese character sounds like 高 (Gāo) which means high, rise, or up. Normally, we like to wish someone 步步高升 (Bou Bou Gou Sing in Cantonese) or Bù bù gāo shēng (in Mandarin) when celebrating with this dish. So, I want to wish you the same - May you rise a step higher in everything you do!

I think I might add fresh ginger or ginger powder to this when I try it!! In Indian cooking, I love using ginger to enhance the flavour of daikon. Hopefully it will work! Thank you for sharing your recipe - Happy Lunar New Year 🐯🏮!!

Thank you so much for sharing, Karishma. Indeed, ginger definitely brings out the flavor because we use that to braise daikon as well. :) Happy Lunar New Year and wishing you a wonderful year ahead.

@@WoonHeng I can sometimes get rutabaga - thanks for the suggestion. I can also get a longish black radish (white inside) that might work too. I love your recipes. I lived in Japan and Hong Kong for 32 years and really miss the local foods.

@@lindaladdin8067 Thanks a lot Linda. I hope you like how it turns out with the black radish. I really love Japan too and visited Hong Kong once - both places are amazing, lots of great food! :)

thank you for your recipe, can radish be replaced with yam?
@WoonHeng
@WoonHeng 2 года назад
yes, you can. You'll need to adjust the water higher because yam (taro) has less water content.
