This video shows you how to safely tow or drag a deer back to the truck, road or camp. I always climb uphill when I hunt deer. If I am successful, I will tie a rope to the antlers and tow the deer back downhill to the road or camp. Here are a few tips and tricks that will make dragging a deer safer and easier.
Sometimes towing a deer is too difficult if you need to drag across big country or uphill. In this case, you will need to bone out and pack the animal. Check out our "Skinning and Boning Out a Deer - How to backpack out an animal from the field" video • EatWild - Skinning and...

When I was just starting to hunt my dad showed me to tuck the front legs behind the animals head crossing them then put your "tow" rope over them to hold them there. It makes the animal arrow shaped and they are not catching on trees and stumps as you pull. I have been using that technique for the better part of 40 years and it makes less work for the person pulling the animal out.

Good tips. Ever used a plastic sled...works pretty good.

I haven't tried using a plastic sled. I should probably try it, but I'm reluctant to pack around while I hunt. Do you pack it with you when you hunt? Or do you run back and grab it?
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 8 лет назад
EatWild Dylan I don't end up too far from a vehicle so usually just leave it there. In the summer I use a dolly and when things harden up switch over. But a plastic sled works well in the summer too.

I use an old waterskiing tow rope. The handle works great , I wrap the rope around the antlers. Feed the handle through the loop on the end of the rope. It is light, doesn't take up hardly any room in my backpack. The handle can be removed from the rest of the tow rope, leaving a handle with about two to three feet of rope. Easier than antler dragging.

You almost need a winch in the truck bed and an telescopic ramp The solo stick drag was genius. I had only ever seen the log method. Paracord?

Also, loop the string around the buck's nose and it helps to lift his head over obstacles.

Was that a Sako? I bring twine with me, not a lot, but especially in cases like this, I sow the belly back, so that no debris get into the open cavity. Also, I attach to the rear legs, just poke a hole in between the tendon and the muscle, less chances to get antlers into your calves or stuck into the terrain. All in all, awesome work, thanks for taking the time to put the info together.

Never in my 20 years of Kansas hunting have I got a deer in an open field or clear woods. Always had to fight and cuss dragging it through weeds as tall as me and brush that catches every part of the deer lol

I always carry two deer drags with light rope in my backpack there super light don't take up much room and if there's two of us we both can use one These are the deer drag that actually have a harness the harness can be a pain in the ass when you're going uphill but also you can put it over your shoulder when you're going uphill and do the old one two three heave-ho but seriously you need to do a video on how to drag a deer uphill downhill is piece of cake

Does this method ruin the fur/hide or bruise the meat?
@EatWildDylan
@EatWildDylan 2 года назад
It will not bruise the meat. Meat will not bruise once the animal’s heart stops pumping blood. As for the hide, it will only pull out hair if you are dragging over rock or gravel for long distances. The hide looks fine after most of my drags over grass and forest flour. Good luck

I cannot say I've ever hunted but the entire process seems like a giant pain in the ass. But I'm sure for the hunter it's all part of the experience & they don't see it that way.

Wear some hunter orange so you don't get shot
@52rhflight56
@52rhflight56 5 лет назад
The number of human males with color blindness is significant (about 8%). Some studies show that dichromat individuals have an advantage in seeing past color-based camouflage. However, the downside is that a number of colorblind individuals see orange as buck-brown. Most locations do not have a color vision selection for hunting license issuance, so wearing hunter orange by individuals has a potential downside if you expect it to provide any protection. You might as well wear a buckskin jacket. I learned that from working with individuals that had a form of different (Deuteranopia, Protanopia, Tetrachromat, or Anomalous Trichromat) color vision. It's surprising how many individuals are color blind and do not realize it. Also, the people down range may not be hunters and unaware of wearing the latest orange fashion accessories for the benefit of hunters with normal vision. The most important rule in hunter safety (and general range safety) should be to always check that down range is clear with a positively identified target and a verified backstop. That being said, for hunters that like camo, deer are also dichromats and have an advantage seeing past color-based camo.

Never unload your gun when out in the field. Where ever there’s deer, they’re predators. Bears, cougars, wolves, coyotes etc. You never know what you could possibly walk up on. Don’t unload your firearm until your back to your vehicle.
