Hi Lanier...you are one of only few who have touched on this fragrance. I am a fan of leathers/animalics. Ive read all the reviews on Fragrantica on this one and find what i see very interesting. The reviewers talk of the BO smell to some degree...and the fine blending..how intriguing.......not a big fan of cumin frags because of thisbut as i understand this fragrance doesnt contain it...all this has made me very interested in trying a sample..i do also understand that "they" say there is a difference between the dark or copper top edition and the clear top edition.........w/the copper top one more authentic to the original...do you know of this?.........in any event it does sound like a fall/winter scent(which i do love best)..not a fan of aquatics here myself...so alll in all this one sounds like a great fragrance to try first..............thank you again for being the only one or two english speaking reviewers presenting this fragrance from a great house Hermes...........PS..i love Bel Ami even though its been reformulated from the 80s......lol....................thanks again Bob
Friday Night drinks and a perfume review with Lanier...schweet! Who could ever forget that memorable I Love Lucy episode featuring guest-star William Holden? Nobody, I tell you! I've never had a Brown Derby drink, but perhaps I'll partake of this beverage somewhere down the road. Eau d'Hermes? I never would have guessed. I've been to my local Hermes Store (55-mile drive) a half-dozen times and I have never sampled this one...although I may have a sample of it in one of my shoeboxes. Thanks for providing a classic review of this classic fragrance; well-done! I just sorted through all my Hermes samples and, sadly, I do not have a sample of Eau d'Hermes. However, I do have a ton of samples and I have yet to try Eau de Gentaine Blanche and Eau d'Orange Verte - gonna get to 'em this weekend. Anyway, I'm going to have to get my nose on this classic fragrance because I just love perfume with leather and birch. Thanks for bringing Eau d'Hermes to my attention...it was completely off my scent radar. X Ambre Narguile - Eau de Gentiane Blanche - Eau d'Orange Verte X Terre d'Hermes X Un Jardin En Mediterranee X Un Jardin Sur Le Toit X Vetiver Tonka X Voyage d'Hermes X Cuir d'Ange
Jim R thanks! And I mean that Jim... thank you for your wonderful comment. I am glad I could put a flow spot on this of forgotten star. And in the process get you to open up that old shoebox. Cheers!
My first experience with Hermes fragrances was with Eau d'Orange Verte. A hotel I was staying at in Paris just off the Champs Elysses had small bottles of the shower gel and hand cream in the rooms. Very fresh, very pleasant. It will always remind me of my couple of days watching the tennis at Roland Garros.
Hi Lanier The cocktail looks so yummy. The Brown Derby sounds so elegant and the history of the place sounds so interesting. What a shame it has been closed. I get excited just seeing the beautiful orange bag. The perfume sounds different- dirty. Do you like Chanel Sycamore? As I think I will get this as my Winter perfume. I know many do not like it but for some reason it is pulling me to buy it. I have tried three times now in the Chanel boutique. Hugs.
Ada Solly Styling Chanel Sycamore is a modern masterpiece! I love it and think YOU would be smashing in it. You look like a Sycamore lady. I say buy it Ada and I want an unboxing and a review ~! Love Always and hugs too.
Although we have a very different styles, I love your reviews and classic taste. The more I get into fragrances the more I appreciate the scents you review and I like the retro aspect. I bought a copper cap 50ml of eau d'Hermès for next to nothing online and I like it more every time I wear it. I first wanted to sell it, but I'm keeping it.
wonderful review, Lanier. i love poivre samarcande, so eau should be right my alley :) and i'm making that cocktail for my downton abbey marathon tonight :)
Tal Mamatov Oh what fun! The dowager Countess of Grantham a few Brown Derbys and who knows what mischief and mayhem may ensue! I want a full report tomorrow.
Liam Sardea Liam... you did a magnificent review and I am going to link it for all my followers. You are brilliant. Here is the LINK everyone! olfactics.wordpress.com/2015/04/04/eau-dhermes-by-hermes/
It's such a pleasure watching your reviews... I own Terre d'Hermes (EDT & EDP) and both are wonderful. Never smelled Eau d'Hermes though. Thanks for sharing with us Mr. Smith. Cheers!
I wish I could've smelled the original. I have the formulation with the copper top cap... sprayed it on and 30 min later.. skin scent. But I still purchase it. Hermes fragrance scents fit my personality well.
Natalee Patel Natty this one may be a challenge but do if you can test it out and let me know how it feels and smells and what thoughts it puts in your lovely brain. Cheers luv!
Lanier Smith Will do! I looked for it yesterday (we went to a larger MYER) but they didn't have it... I tried 24 Faubourg though which I really enjoyed :)
So i am extremely interested in purchasing this fragrance. I am looking to add a leather scent to my collection as right now im just trying to accumulate a scent for each primary note. I want this to be my leather fragrance however, I have some concerns. People mention a very animalic , sex like smell in this fragrance which I dont mind but is there any chance you could elaborate on that comment? Id Also like to know if the reformulated versions of this are worth purchasing? As a side note, Id love too see you review Honey Oud by Floris especially since you are such a fan of the house.
Intriguing review since I like leather, geranium and cinnamon. The classic Hermes bottle is perhaps my favorite of all perfume bottles, along with the Chanel 5, 19, Coco, Coco Mlle edp and parfum bottle design. btw I was able to revisit Egoiste today with a spritz on me; it's very light, and I liked it, but think it would work better on a man. I came away from Nordies with a sample of TM Ultra Zest, and have yet to try it. Went to TBS and bought Smoky Poppy and Moringa.
Larry Frukhtman oh to smell the originals... well you can if you go to the Osmothèque at Versailles outside of Paris... There you can visit the musee of Olfactory History and smell almost anything from the past.
Oh Lanier ... you have been to the original Brown Derby!!! Wow! Love " I Love Lucy "....... remember the one when she was in the chocolate factory! LOL
It's a big B.O. cumin spice bomb that took me a long time to appreciate. I took to Hermes Poivre Samarcande much quicker. Hermes Bel Ami (vintage) is also an amazing leather fragrance. Eau d'Hermes is the granddaddy to several Jean Claude Ellena creations. I enjoyed watching and cheers!
rhaybans YES the big B.O. ...that was the animal I was smelling...the human animal. It only last a few moments on my skin and then the fabulous heart and leather take over. Oh yes to Bel Ami.... love that one. Cheers rhaybans and thank you.
Great review, as always... looking forward to giving it a whiff! I hope you checked out the Jardin line too.. I absolutely LOOOVE Mediterranean, its like a holiday in a bottle.. garden of Eden. One of the most relaxing mood boosting scents out there for sure
I think you’ll love it, its in my current top 3 along with Spicebomb & Eau de Missions… they all remind me to be fun, relaxed & playful… so just perfect for the season. Take care Lanier ;-)
I've watched this twice in a month! Such an excellent review. May have to blind buy. Have you tried DR Harris Windsor yet? Also Please check out Eau de Mandarine Ambree by Hermes. Such a lovely mandarin note, has the beautiful ethereal yet fleeting trademark of Jean-Claude Ellena.
Thanks TheHarbear for your wonderful complement...twice a month? I am feeling a little Margo Channing to your Eve Harrington LOL. In any case thank you for the suggestions. I have yet to try either. Cheers.
EAU-M-G, I thought Hermes was EAU-lder than this, LOL. You make it too easy for me, Lanier. :) If I didn't make fun of you then I wouldn't care about you :) I kn-EAU I'm sick, LOL
