Wow, that undercoat of Warp Lightning followed by careful brush control of Dark Angles Green has amaaaaazing results. At a glance, it looks almost like an airbrushed transition. Honestly you could stop right there (for the green) and it would be a pretty fantastic method for batch painting troops to a better than tabletop standard.
I was looking a lot for a nice tutorial for the Dark Angles. You, Sir, nailed it. Looks amazing and I like the blend of techniques and the different colours used. I try to hold up to your example with some minor tweaks. Thank you so much for this!
best looking Dark Angel paint job I have found. Good and clear tutorial and nice combination of contrast and layer paints used. love it and gonna use this for my marines.
Dammit! now I have to go white ink ALL my marines and start again, this colourway looks a million times better. Thank you Sir you have shown me a new light
Juan, Again you have done an amazing job. I'll try to do just what you have shown me. I need to find a brush like the one that you use. I love your brush! You have started my trip back into miniatyre painting. Thank you for that. Stay safe and Happy.
Use a large brush, most people have problems because they use a tiny Brush. Try to cover the whole panel or section in one brushtroke if possible or in as less as possible. Have a lot of paint in the brush, don't be afraid to use more paint than you think you need, it's better to absorb it later than to not have enough.
What does ‘Eavy mean? I see it everywhere in this hobby but I can’t find where it is defined or the words origin. Is it a self proclaimed title or style by Games Workshop to sound cool? Or is it a formal style of art taught in school?
'Eavy, as in Heavy Metal, but with a British accent dropping the H. The music was popular in the 80's, and early GW games had heavy metal influences in the art style. There was even a band that wrote 40k-themed rock songs. Also, the early minis were made of metal. Given the British love of wordplay, the painting team Juan mentioned took their name from combining the two.
Just ordered some dark angels contrast and warp lightning to give this method a shot. I’m not actually going for a full ‘Eavy Metal style as actually don’t like the look *that* much edge highlighting on my models (or actually doing the edge highlighting lol), but that DA contrast over Warp Lightning actually looks like it has a pretty nice “natural” highlight that I could probably get away with just a little edge highlighting on top of and still look somewhere between “battle ready” and “parade ready”
Recently spotted your channel. I have always been a bit wary of contrast paints.....until seeing your spectacular technique with them. Huge fan of your work! You should charge GW for advertising as this will surely increase sales for this range! Haha. I myself am about to buy a load. I've been looking through all of your 'Evy Contrast' tutorials and now have a great recipe for my new 'Silver Templar' contingent. "LET'S GET CRACKIN'!''
Thanks mate, I keep telling them they owe me money but for some weird reason they refuse to give me any. Can you believe it? Well, what can you do? Thanks for watching mate
Great work as usual :D. I'm thinking to paint my Indomitus Marines in the colours of Dark Angels. What did you use to thin down the contrasts? Contrast medium or just pure water drops?
Hey just wondering if this is still how you would do dark angels with contrast paints? I noticed your more recent ones (the black armor, blood angels, and yellow armor) is different. I’d like to do some dry brushing with a couple different colors then go over it with dark angels green similar to your newer videos. Do you have paints or a process you would recommend for that?
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures but seriously what I appreciate the most is that you mastered a new kind of products in a really short amount of time and THAT is the most amazing in your serie.
Been waiting a while for the Dark Angels! Awesome vid bro. My only criticism is the eye lenses would pop out much more if they were red. Other than that, love it! Time to get cracking with my DA army now.
Great video. It is perfect for my Phobos Strike Team painted in Dark Angels scheme. Just a fast question. If you fucked up while highlighting over the Dark Angles contrast, what do you do to fix it? Caliban Green base paint? Dark Angels Costrast again? Thank you very much.
I agree with the Matt ceramite, but I think the gloss is supposed to come from the paint used over it. Legion era Dark Angels are described as having a really high gloss black armour. Just my thoughts on it anyway
Hey Juan, I'm trying to get Warpstone Glow and Moot Green to the consistency you have here and it may be the heat, but I can't get it. What ratio have you used (if you remember)
There are no ratios, you need to do it by feel. Watch my video on how to thin paints and you will see why that doesn't make sense. EVEN if I gave you a ratio, my paints are pre-thinned from transferring them to droppers so that number would be meaningless. Also different batches of pains have different consistencies, especially if they are old and have been for a while on the shelves.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Cheers boss, I'll watch the thin video again, but I'll tag you when I get these Dark Angels up, it's likely just me being crap and the heat :D
With two green marine chapters out of the way, I notice you are putting down another colour over the primer/base coat - what would you suggest under Militarum Green for a Raptors colour scheme? (Wraithbone totally doesn't work)
Amazing video. I wanted to ask i currently have a dark angel army of regular marines to paint would you suggest me to use caliban green or the contrast green of dark angels ?
I love this paint job, I went to my local games workshop and they only had wraithbone primer spray. I was told it would be just as good as corax if not better. My question is will my model still turn out like yours
A lot of dark angels videos I have seen have you base it black first and then do the contrasts. How would basing black affect the model if this video is followed? Would the overall tone just be darker?
You cannot apply Contrast over a black primer. Contrast paints are transparent, they work by tinting the underlayer so they need a lighter colour than their own underneath to work. If you want to start with black then Contrast Paints are not the way to go, just do a layer of Caliban Green and Highlight from there.
Bravo mate, your painting is just superb. Would you ever consider doing a Deathwatch model? I've just begun painting them and would appreciate any tips.
Juan could you do one where its a none Contrast version of dark angels :o recently startet a dark angels army with the indormitus box and your guides are always such a great resource to view for ideas
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures i got another question do you have an idea on how to do the squad marking they have on their shoulders the transfer sheets in the indomitus box does not have the battleline marks
Yes, practice 😂 I mean there's no secrets, a good brush and thinned down paint. Don't forget you can always use green colour to correct and perfect the shape
This tutorial series is just amazing, I can't thank you enough for all the information that you have shared. :) Is there is a chance for you to take a step further and succumb to the dark part of the 40k universe? ;) Maybe even make it not in 'EAVY style but in grim and dark tones... but with Contrast paints. :P
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Totally understandable and just can't wait for the next video. :) Also, how do you come up with all these recipes for colors, I mean, do you test it on something before applying to the model? I am asking because I am constantly finding myself in a though process of how to mix and how to layer colors to the desired tone or effect but in most cases, it just stays in my head because I am too afraid to ruin the model.
It's an old Windsor and Newton Series 7, size 1 believe. Try loading up the brush more and apply more contrast to the surface, section by section. Then clean the brush and absorb the excess. Having more paint will make it easier for it to settle smooth as gravity will do its job better.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thanks for the tip! I'll be sure to give that a go 👍 keep up the good work, looking forward to recreating your painting of Da Red Gobbo after a bit more practice with space marines!
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Awesome tutorial, but I seem to have the same issue. It doesn't come out uniformly smooth. Especially when I try and add a "thinner" layer. Any tips???
Es cuestión de ir poco a poco como ves en el vídeo. Hay que fijarse bien y si ves que está desigual, absorbes las zonas donde se ha concentrado de forma incorrecta
Contrast Medium, I think I actually say that but maybe I forgot. When I do the Metallics it's usually the end of the paintjob and I'm tired and thinking about finishing it as quickly as possible
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you for the answer. Maybe I just didn't listen good enough. Your tutorials are awesome... Will you paint Ultramarines, too? It's the chapter I'm painting but I couldn't figure out a good way to paint with Contrast. It isn't neat enough for a eavy metal look.
Sorry, there won't be a Black Templar video because there is already a video on how to paint Black, just use the Raven Guard one for the armour and you can use the How to Paint Bone Armour for the white details.
Anyone able to tell me the best way to get these same results but with black armour with contrast paints? I'm doing horus heresy dark angel colour scheme on the same model as prefer their old look. Thanks in advance!
