Ebay Free Shipping: Should You Offer It?

Here's an example of when and when not to do free shipping. I'm a niche store and 95% of my products are CGC graded comic books. They're flat, they stack with each other and ship together really well and everyone who buys one wants a lot more than one. I probably have some other books that people want if they're buying one so combined shipping is a huge discount and a selling point that gives them incentive to buy multiples that, like you said, wouldn't create a discount with free shipping when the shipping cost is added to the total price. Now, I used to have a coupon code to where they'd get 10% off the whole order if they bought at least 3 to convince them to buy multiples. They saw the little tiny 10% number and didn't really care much about it. I took that away and I created an automatic discount that gave them free shipping when they buy 3 or more. In that case, the shipping is actually free for them without being added to the cost of their item so it seems much better to people than paying for shipping or getting a percentage that didn't sound as good as the word "free" does and sometimes it will put them into a free-for-all rage of a shopping spree. It costs me a lot less than 10% off of their item costs to cover the shipping, since my minimum price on a graded book is $49.99. That could bite me in the a** if someone decides to order a giant box of graded books and return it but most of the time, comic nerds aren't returning their books because we're a different breed of people than that "Camera Karen" that you were referring to who did the Pepsi challenge at your expense so it usually works out in my favor.

I've used calculated shipping for years, I make sure to be accurate on my weight and dimensions. I agree, shipping lessons are usually learned the hard way.👍👍

LOL Yeah, I am about 80% fixed shipping figuring it at a regional average (lose a little far away, make a little close) The 20% of my items with free shipping is in place mostly because the majority of other sellers are free ship on the items. (trying to stay competitive)

Okay, I do not offer free shipping on anything nor free returns. One thing you did not talk about is if you use promoted listings and run sales. If you have free shipping because you have added that into your price, then you are paying promoted fees on your shipping that is included in your price. If you run a sale, then you are running a sale on your free shipping which you have built into your price. Free shipping is not free for anyone ❤️‍🔥👩‍🌾

eBay fees started charging around 2002 for sale price +shipping price = 15 percent to eBay.. No I stopped overseas ,auctions and free shipping and returns years ago

I tried free shipping for 6 months. I didn’t see a dramatic increase in sales, but it did help a little bit.

I used to do free shipping until a fellow ebayer convinced me otherwise. I didn’t notice a drop in sales. I do calculated and I pass on the business discount I get through eBay or pirate ship. I run a lot of sales and don’t like running a sale on my shipping rate.

It is illegal by federal law to charge more than the post office...but.. If you word it as " shipping and handling fees are" that is legal

Good video Scott. You may know my stance from your Wednesday morning YT show. If a buyer filters their search by free shipping, is your listing being seen? Don’t care?… There’s ebay’s rep of glitches. Free shipping takes that ball out of eBay’s court calculating a competitive shipping cost. For me, the time I save not having to respond to “can I get a discount” messages, allows me to watch more silly Ring videos or what cats do while owners are at work 😂
