eBay K40 CO2 Laser - Can Your Laser Kill You? Shocking Evidence!

In this episode, we will be sharing and explosive experience I had with my eBay / k40 CO2 laser! As I was aligning the mirrors, the the tube for some reason shorted out failing to laser and dumping over 20,000 to ground! Keep in mind that I an my face was less then 2 feet away and thankfully I was wear protective eyewear as the video really fails to capture power of the true power of the flash and arch!
This is why it is critically important to have a solid earthen ground as as well as high quality laser "safety" glasses as this is a high intensity electrical "flash" which can cause sever burns!

you should really take proper precautions anyway. CO2 lasers are not toys. Proper electrical and operational safety are a must. You shouldnt just relay on some random youtube videos Grab some books or if you a trade school nearby maybe talk to some relevant professor and maybe invite him for a coffee or something. (dont expect a free class)

There are many risks with a laser in general and especially a CO2 laser as you can not see the beam and at 40 watts even an unfocused beam can do a lot of damage! Also don't get me going on the cheap Chinese water pump they want you drop in a bucket of water and plug into 110volt / 10 amp outlet!

@@laharl2k of course but I work in this kind of thing normally, so its more that here its showing the quality of the CO2 laser PSU being kinda shitty and not good at detecting faults. They should really have output sensing to detect the power output into the tube, and some current sensing on the ground plane to detect this kind of short in the device, because its so dangerous.

the tube isnt shorted, its depleted. something happened and air got inside so now it needs way more volts to ionize so it simply doesnt and as the path to the chasis is shorter than to the other side of the tube it simply takes the shorter path. tubes dont short, and it it were short circuited it would clamp the voltage down and fry your hv supply. if i were you i would start by checking the water pump and then check the tubes neck and gas drain tube for any crack that could have let air in.

No crack in the tube and no to the depletion either as the tube is new. Upon later inspection it appears the anode came lose in the tube and then failed to arc inside so it decided to arc outside.

@@DIY3DTECHcom Well at least you dont need to buy a new tube then. Id recomend checking all the connections, spray some rubbing alcohol on them and wiggle them around so the make proper contact and then secure them with silicone or better yet, with hot glue. If you are gonna use hot glue dont use the glue gun, grab a bar, grab a heatgun, heat the end of the bar slowly until its starts to flow (it doesnt conduct heat very well so it takes a minute or two to heat up to center) Once its fairly molten, say the last 0.5cm of the bar, just shove it on the connector you want to secure and use the bar itself to move it around and push it in so it grabs well to the parts. Vibrations are an invisible enemy, you can think things will never come loose or fatigue but the moment you least expect it your mosfet's legs will break and that connector which is really tight will start randomly failing due to bad contact. (talking from experience) In CNC machines always make double sure your connections are secure. Redundancy is the best, but the second best is to make sure to mitigate the failure causes as much as possible.

There can be a short anywhere on the high voltage wire and this is what it will look like. Happened to me due to condensation on the tube near where the manufacturer spliced the high voltage wire together with electrical tape. I fixed the wire and all was well.

Install a gfci on your ground too (see electroboom)

Good rule of thumb for tools is to always use a GFCI all the time, i have one on my welder and on anything that has any kind of voltage stepping like that

This is on a GFCI! Keep in the mind the power supply did not fail, it was the "tube" and a high voltage arc to an earthen ground! So instead of arcing inside the tube (as a laser tube is an arc lamp) it did it outside. So GFCI did not kick out...

@@DIY3DTECHcom ah i have both a gfci and earth fault trips the input breakers, so if power above 5ma goes to earth it trips the breaker too not just a cut cable also earth to neutral or earth to live. Its called an RCCB :)

You bet! I had my safety gear when this happened (I do not trust k40's) as my face was about a foot away when this let loose! Scared the hell out of me!

This should trigger the breaker right ? How does this still happen ?

No, why should it trigger any breaker? The current flows like it should. The laser power supply is a current limited high voltage supply. There's an arc which means current is flowing. The power supply thinks that everything is in perfect order. The other end of the laser tube is connected to ground (case) so nothing special happened. You won't get shocked by touching the case, since the current runs to the case like it always did.

@@zaprodk That is not what the OP might have meant. If the breaker is an earth leakage or core balance device, any current that is not balanced in the active and neutral is detected. The tube should not be connected to ground...that is just plain crazy...that would make for a very scary device

@@mekuranda My answer still applies. From an electrical perspective, everything is fine and good. The negative terminal of the laser power supply and the tube is connected to case ground. It's only if you stick your fingers in and get shocked that there will be a detectable current for an earth leakage relay to shut off.

No this will NOT trigger a breaker nor GFCI (as YES this is connected to one) either as pointed out below this is acting (electrically) as ti should. The only difference is that instead of arcing inside the tube (as a laser tube is an arc lamp) it is arcing outside the reason you MUST have an earthen ground....

I live in Spain. I have a K40 under the xmass tree. The problem is Spain has a 2 pin electrical system so no earth , they use earth leak protection trips instead. I am now really worried about switch this thing on now.

It's not the volts but the Mils that kill..... That's what I was taught in electronics in college

It depends on how you wish to die, as this is far more "voltage" then needed to stop your heart. Whereas current will "burn" so neither any good in my book as I had a cousin and friend electrocuted and can tell you not pretty either way...

It's actually less volts than is in a taser, but tasers have almost no amps. This has enough amps to power a laser that cuts wood. The amperage is most definitely the danger.

@@DIY3DTECHcom the other comments here are correct...Current is critical to lethality...also frequency has an impact...as the most common cause of electrocution death is interrupting muscle messaging from brain to heart...so above about 200mA..there is a likelyhood that you will be "blown away"...and a current of less than 20mA will allow you to "pull away"....but as you suggest...I don't' want to test that myself...I am happy to accept my engineering professors words on that subject

Well now that's just dumb.. pushing that button over and over and over again.. instead of pushing people away from the k40, you could educate them, tell them what they can do to prevent this.. and yes, well prevented this will NEVER happen..

LOL! You believe this is preventable? Sorry no, this is a cheap Chinese device which in reality should not be sold in the US as over the past two years I have created a number of video on the risks. You see I have had two people I knew die of electrocution, it is not pretty and people need to know what they are getting into as this is a HIGH VOLTAGE device and there is nothing to you can do to prevent this so if you are going to take the "risk" you need to what can happen.

So if you ground the machine properly, if you remove any paint there is between the machine and ground wire, not even then, one is not safe using the machine? Come on...... educate people....

Stop it! I cringe every time you push that button. :) Very informative video that all K40 owners need to see. You should do videos about the other ways a K40 could kill or maim a person.
