EBAY SCANDAL? PWCC Responds To eBay's "Defamatory" Statement 

The fact the PWCC turned off the bidder identification a few months back, that alone is super sketchy. Why would they do that if not to make shill bidding harder to track? Now them creating their own site, with no third party oversight, no one to catch them or call them out for it... Unless their auctions are extremely transparent, which we all know they won't be, then I'm leaning towards hoping that their own site launch is a huge flop and then have them come crawling back to ebay.

I doubt eBay would do this without pretty damning evidence. From what I read (and maybe you mentioned this) PWCC did $200 million in sales over the past year on eBay. That’s huge, and for eBay to essentially call them out like this, I would imagine it takes a preponderance of evidence (if not beyond a reasonable doubt). As much as I dislike eBay, I have to side with them on this one. PWCC seems to always sell their cards well over market price which doesn’t make a lot of sense. My guess is eBay has some clear evidence of shill bidding from PWCC

If PWCC actually shilled as eBay alleges, then them moving to their own platform/website will make that process much easier and they would have every incentive to do so.

there are some words that are being avoided. Ebay says "individual's associated with PCWW". that doesn't mean employee's specifically, just some one who helps PCWW. In PCWW response, they only said "employee's" haven't done anything wrong. they could still have ebay friends, family or some one they asked to do fake bids. just saying employee's leaves too many options.

I never bid on a pwcc auction because they always sell things way above the eBay average. I think it makes sense that they’re shill bidding plus that trimming scandal doesn’t help their rep lol

Question is why is Ebay going after PWCC specifically that is competition, even if its a small competitor. Where is Ebay saying they will be cracking down on other Shills on its sight? The shady bit is Ebay singling out PWCC solely for this. Accounts that big a lot but never actually buy anything, if they do buy stuff they have no feedback or shady looking feedback. When I heard about this at first I figured it was PWCC accusing Ebay of something since PWCC has been known to catch and remove shills from their own website, and Ebay has a shady past when it comes to shills.

Love the PWCC clever wording that they mention not knowing their employees but eBay is saying “individuals associated with” PWCC so could be connection to PWCC but not strictly an employee of PWCC. PWCC was shocked to see eBay’s email today stating that unidentified “individuals associated with” PWCC engaged in “shill bidding.” To PWCC’s knowledge, its employees have never engaged in any behavior that violates eBay’s agreements and policies. PWCC goes to great lengths to ensure that its employees follow eBay’s rules and PWCC employees do not have access to eBay’s bidding records or information.

eBay "holds all the cards" in this situation... PWCC is gonna have a hard time now that they've been kicked out. Especially with the new 3 day SNAD window, most people are gonna just list cards on their eBay page now. No need to bother with consignment services for a lot folks. Nice video

honestly auctions are nice to get cards for a lower price, but as a seller and even a buyer in general its way more safe to just have buy it now and make an offer price on your listing.

Imo when ebay makes this kind of accusation, they fully know the legal ramifications for making a statement that can't be backed up and they would be well aware that a defamation lawsuit could happen in that circumstance. So I think they would be sure to have 100% solid evidence that "individuals associated" with PWCC were shill bidding before releasing that kind of statement.

I think that ebay would not risk their image for a lie. They probably have enough evidence to prove it.

I don't think eBay would release a statement like this unless they had solid proof. Honestly it doesn't surprise me at all. We have to wait and see.

shill bidding actually happens mostly in this situation, in which a bidder who is already winning places another higher bid on top of itself. A shill bidder will see this person winning with multiple bids, and bid the lowest possible amount and look at the bid history to see if their name appears between the former bidders two bids. If the former bidder still has the top 2 bids, the shill bidder will repeat bidding the minimum amount until they see their name appear 2nd highest, thus meaning they out bid the first bid by the original bidder. Once they see this they will no longer bid as they know the next bid might then be the highest bid, effectively marching the price up to the very highest without out bidding them. Its very simple to do and im sure shill bidding has been going on for a very long time.

Honestly I don't think ebay says these things because they want to, they must have a reason to do this and proves for this.

lemme preface Ruxin by saying i love your channel and the reason I'm here is because i've collected Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon my entire life, but i have absolutely no expertise in the realm of selling cards and auctions and stuff like that, so i say this as an observer, not as an expert anyway, i've seen a couple comments here speaking to the effect that ebay doesn't care about shill bidding as a matter of principle and that they're just trying to take down a future competitor..on the other hand, Old School Expert mentioned PWCC did over $200 mil in sales on ebay in the last year and idk about y'all, but i can't see them being so readily willing to part ways w/ such a big cash cow (their yearly revenue is $10 bil but $200 mil is nothing to scoff at) unless there was substantial evidence of shill bidding and really are that principled and won't tolerate it CanYouDodgeThis mentioned that PWCC would be even more equipped to shill bid by moving away from ebay, which makes me further ponder if ebay is primarily if not entirely motivated by taking out a potential competitor, in which case you could condemn both PWCC for shill bidding and ebay for not allowing us to have a competitive marketplace, as Omar mentioned, which would lower seller fees and i'm guessing prices too...i'm rabid anti-capitalist, but there are industries where competition makes prices more amiable to the paying customer seeing the other comments that elucidate the shady practices on the part of PWCC makes me believe their sins are the really condemnable ones here, assuming one has any interest in likewise castigating ebay for potentially trying to squash a competitor, which tbh i understand that viewpoint...should be interesting to see this unfold

I think there’s some truths in both sides of the story. I believe that eBay are pissed off because PWCC auctions saw some form of “shill bids” and decided to allege that it were people who were associated with the business. This is in response to PWCC taking their business off eBay. Which that was in response to eBay having issues with returns, scams and other issues (I don’t buy off eBay so I am unaware of such issues personally). The reason why I say some and not taking one side or the other is because eBay refuses to release information regarding this issue, which when alleging something, should be the first thing one states… if you have proof show it. Going to be interesting to see what happens next on the next episode of DragonBallZ

I am always skeptical with private bidding. One transparent way would be to show how many auctions where won and not paid for each month as % of total auctions sold. Whilst this technically does not necessarily mean there has been no market manipulation through shill bidding it does show actual transaction and what people were willing to pay for said item. Also I cannot see how PWCC private bidding is any different from other auction houses like Christie’s art auction where you can be anonymous. I am not a fan but some bidders don’t want to be known so maybe an option to be public or private bidder would be cool and people can make their own judgements if they trust it

Omg, this is insane. I’ve watched their auctions for years so this is crazy considering how high their buyers premium already is. I honestly believe Ebay, I don’t think they would be stupid enough to risk a lawsuit. I definitely think there is some truth to what PWCC is saying but think there are bad eggs in the company you were acting on their own interests.

I feel like a case could be made for both sides. Ebay doesn't want the loss of sales, but PWCC has also been less than transparent for a while, and their response does seem both rather strawman-ish and also dances around Ebay's initial allegation. I feel like Ebay wouldn't jump on something like this if there wasn't some damning evidence behind the scenes. Either way, this will be fun to watch unfold 👀

I highly doubt Ebay would do this without some serious evidence. PWCC must bring in a crap ton of money for Ebay through its fees. Remember, PWCC charges 18% of whatever the auction sells for. From that 18%, PWCC covers the fees from Ebay (12% unless an agreement has been made to lower it). The entire secondary market popped off like it has because of PWCC. The catalyst was the first 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard which sold for over $100k at the beginning of the pandemic. After that, Logan Paul happened... and the rest is history. Since then, we've seen a $500k+ Alpha Black Lotus, $300k+ 1st Ed. Shadowless Charizard, $100K+ Lugia... that's just a few. I wouldn't be surprised if they list their auctions through Goldin Auctions solely now. Funny enough, PSA Grading owns Goldin Auctions :)

I definitely think PWCC is up to shenanigans. Why would eBay knowingly put themselves in legal jeopardy over PWCC shifting platforms? I don't think they would be so careless to make such false statements. And if PWCC moves to their own platform, it means less/no oversight of their auctions to prevent future shill bidding. Their statement seemed rather hostile. While eBay definitely isn't perfect, I'm willing to bet eBay is probably in the right on this issue. They wouldn't want to be complicit in allowing shill bids on their platform if they have such damning evidence.

ngl, i can totally see PWCC doing something like this. I had recently been in the market for a PSA 10 Scorbunny card and found an auction on their page. It had 3 days or so left, and was only at around $15-$20 with the last bid being 2 days old. I checked the last day of the auction and someone had bid +$400 on it out of nowhere. seems super fishy to me, especially Scorbunny would not go for that much.

I think they are at fault. We all know how grimy actual card shops can be and these guys are no different. The timing is the only thing working in favour of pwcc however the fact that they decided to make it so people can't see who's bidding on what is very suspicious

Shill bidding occurring even once counts as evidence, and stuff like that is inevitable with thousands of auctions. I am assuming eBay probably has enough evidence to defend their claim because they don't want to be sued for defamation from PWCC, but eBay probably sook out that evidence and looked to get rid of PWCC.

Since PWCC is an entity it will be very hard for them to come at eBay for defamation. eBay just needs to say they heard it from a source and unless they can prove it was intentional on eBays part this will be a paper lawsuit.

Both parties look sketchy, so just find the best deal when buying and try to avoid auctions if you can people

Once PWCC leaves eBay, they will take with them a considerable customer base that eBay does not want to lose. This “defamation” could just be an attempt to keep eBay customers from going elsewhere to buy/sell trading cards. All speculation.

Ebay is a huge company and has been around a long time. The fact they went out of their way to say something like this, to me, makes me give them the benefit of the doubt. I doubt they'd single out somebody without some evidence. If they know they're gonna go to court they're not going to hand over any proof so it can't be kept quiet.

It's probably a case of both. eBay is trash and has been for awhile. Shill bidding has been a major problem on eBay for years and they've done little to combat it. I don't think that PWCC is trustworthy either though. Personally, I have moved exclusively to Facebook marketplace, TCG Player, and Mercari because selling and buying stuff is easier.

End of the day regardless if they're guilty or not smaller companies like PWCC are going to feign ignorance and play victim in situations like this. They're only out for money they can get from large companies like eBay. Just hope if they're guilty they get caught or if they really are innocent and it's just a 3rd party being stupid then it's settled properly because at the end of all of this the only people that are suffering are the consumers.
