Changelings got changed in the latest 5e books, they're no longer descended from doppelgangers. Instead, doppelgangers are just changelings corrupted by the daelkyr !

@@beastwarsFTW Changelings were created for Eberron so it's a weird question. But if you had a changeling in another world (like Faerun) then no, the Daelkyr doesn't exist there so it wouldn't be the same. That is just their lore/history in the Eberron setting.

@@SteveReed562 My DM and I created a teleportation mishap with a wild mage (and the goddess of luck and an insane spectator) so that I could play a changeling on Faerun. They are an Eberron exclusive race without world-altering homebrewing currently.

They exist in my homebrew (as well does the warforged). Their initial backstory as descendants of dopplegangers in the lore in my world.

Boo ya! My favorite race in DnD! I'm glad you finally covered them. I particularly like the distinction of Passers, Becomers and Seekers from each other as they are essentially the 3 ways a player usually approaches playing a changeling. Personally I think you have to play a Becomer to get the full changeling experience, it's such a fun roleplaying experience juggling multiple identities.

They are my favorite race too! I want to play in a campaign where all the players are changelings (and with the changeling traveler background). A travel nomadic group fronting as a traveling merchants.

An interesting place where mechanics meet lore is between the paranoid gnomes and changlings. Because changlings can't change into gnomes, because they are small, gnomes have little reason to worry about one of their kind being a changling. But they still have to worry about doppleganers and rakshasas tho!

I'm currently playing a changling/druid in a campaign right now and their deal is they love perspectives, either changing into another person to view life through their eyes or changing into animals to understand their views on life. I haven't gotten to do much with it yet, but it feels rather nice.

There is a druid circle in the Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes: Acheron (dmsguild) called warshaping. You become a liquid metal type with your wild shape. P.S. I made a changeling druid with this circle. Very fun!

Changelings have such a huge potential, but ideally should have a good GM backing up the player. From exploring new looks and identities to working through stresses of fluid identity and multiple persona ( who is the real “me”). So. Much. Roleplaying. Material! And that is not even going for the low hanging fruit options of spies and assassins and thief-guildery politics and stuff.

Miniature Dragon Yeah, I think it’s been stated that Jester was originally going to be a Warlock but then Travis made Ford and the party had no cleric so the CR Traveller (which I imagine was originally intended to be an Archfey) was made a god.

Chanlings are single handedly my second favorite race presided only by gnomes. The rp potential for changlings is amazing, I only got to play one once in small campaign as I am a forever dm but it was single handedly the most fun I have had sence 4e.

That reminds me of "Agent X," from the 1995 reboot of "Get Smart." The character was in an episode 3 or 4 times, but always played by a different actor.

Hear me out. A changeling warlock with the spy or faction agent background. Has been a spy so long they don't even remember what they looked like when they started. Each change causes the changeling to adopt parts of their target's personality and lose a part they had previously. it'd be hard to do, but if you worked with the DM, it'd be fun.

I do give changelings a few limitations and weaknesses. 1. Scars stay on them in all forms. 2. Any damage temporary causes the area to turn white so when meeting in private people will hurt themselves in some minor way i.e picking their finger with a needle.

The 1st doesn't make sense as they can change there form to MAKE scars. The 2nd is weird as the official rules say they don't leave their form unless they choose to. Also their ability is a weaker disguise self (as it doesn't change clothes) so adding another weakness on top of that seams a bit too much. The weakness that ARE Cannon is that any lost limbs cannot be grown back, and that in changeling societies there is a secret tattoo that will persist in any form (Keith Baker confirmed that changlings can hide regular tattoos or make their own with their ability, another strike against permanent scars) that they use to punish malcontents (because taking away the one thing that makes them unique is the worst possible punishment for a changeling).

The Indie Fox Keith also says to make your own eberron and I don't like changelings without any way of forcibly revealing them especially with forces that want to exterminate them though one I idea I've recently is giving changeling a silver allergy similar to dopplers from with witcher and if you don't like it don't use it.

Moonbeam is a spell that reveals chapechangers. Zone of truth and ask them is another way. Your fun is not my fun. Thats ok though.

@@racekitty There are a plethora of ways to reveal, or at least identify, a changeling. Forcing weaknesses on an ability that has to complete with a spell that, already, does it's job better is unnecessarily. You can do whatever you want, as I can't, nor want to, stop you. But I, at the very least, recomend doing some research into Keith Baker's explanations for how Eberron's society identifies, and has security measures for, changelings. A lot of them are really interesting and provide a fun way to balance a changeling player if they get out of hand, without hurting the inherent fun of the base race.

If you made changelings something that preceded most of the other populations, they could provide an explanation for where the partners of the first of each of them came from. Doppelgangers could come much later.

As a DM planning on running an Eberron campaign I'm a little unsure how to handle a Changeling player. Can changelings copy other people? Can they do so instantly? Say for example can a player shape shift in to the captain of the guard after getting a glance at him and use that to run wild with crime sprees? I generally don't like trying to limit my players but I do fear as to whether a changeling has too much of a get out of jail free card.

You as the DM have final say about how much they saw. Changelings can't copy outfits but they could turn into a captain of the guard if the DM said they had a good enough look. Yes they could run wild with crime sprees, but in Eberron people know of Changelings. I would tell the player that changelings like to hide because the opposite is used, a high up official does a crime and blames it on a changeling who was impersonating them. There are repercussions for changelings, I wouldn't think of it as a get out of jail free card.

I think when it says they can "choose their sex", it means they can change the appearance of their sex, not that they can become the other sex. They can't grow more limbs or lose any, so I don't think changing their internal organs is on the table.

Page 45 og Races of Eberron 3.5 ed; "Gender and sexuality; An important aspect of a changeling's identity is the issue of gender. Unlike doppelgangers, which are entirely genderless, a changeling does have a default gender that manifests in adolescence, but each changeling can adapt his or her form to be of either gender, hermaphroditic (both genders simultaneously), or entirely genderless. A changeling can alter his or her gender (and reproductive abilities) as part of using the race's minor shapechange ability". In 5th ed it say so in Rising from the last war, page 18. " Shapechanger; As an action you can change your apperance and your voice. You determine the spesifics of the changes, including your coloration, hairlength, and your sex. ..."

@@Zh337a Thank you. I only got back to D&D in 5e and she was my first character. It's odd they can change their reproductive internal organs, but not the number of bones or add racial organs like a venom sac.

@@robinthrush9672 Well, things like Doppelgangers can (I think) so I believe that such abilities are inherent in changlings but "unlocking" them, so to speak, either causes the changling to go mad or going mad is the way to unlock them. Not too sure.

This feels so coded, like maybe I'm just projecting but being LGBT and neurodivergent has me feeling like a changeling. Like having to mask constantly just to stay safe 👍
