A late comment :-) Just starting a van build & this video is great. I have 2x D4 Plus' coming from Ebay & want to do a static fire to make sure at least 1 works! I have a better clue of what to do now :-) Thank you

Your welcome, they are very robust bits of kit, if one of the motors fails bare in mind the D4+ has a larger black fan with a different amount of magnets compared to the standard D4. However a standard third party D4 motor does work as long as you swap over the black fan.

Really enjoying this series of videos. I'm sure everyone appreciates the level of care and detail you contain in them. Wish I had gutted mine ex EMAS EV before conversion. Next time maybe

The owner is visiting this weekend and that will be decision time whether to gut it or not, I would personally but preferably not in this weather as the upvc cladding is going to break especially the piece in the ceiling because it is weakened with loads of holes in it! She then will have... well an empty van! same as my Crafter is at the moment! However for what this one cost she has her moneys worth it's got three relatively new premium quality LifeLine batteries at £350 each a £500 mains charger a good D4 heater, a single passenger seat good double glazed windows enough spre wiring to do a van or three and quite a lot of plastic mouldings that should be reusable.

Thanks for that, I stuck 12v on the yellow wire and its works fine, now to look at getting a 801 controller

The 801 is an excellent controller and for some odd reason is about a third of the price of a 701 which despite the timer function lacks that oh so important displayed temperature!

Hi there, I'm hoping you get back to me soon as I'm a little stuck - my heater for my camper was already fully installed, I was just moving the temperature controller but I didn't take note of where the wires I pulled out went into! I have the controller with 7 points for wires to attach to that looks just like yours, numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9 and then 5 wires - red, brown, brown and white stripe, blue and brown stripe and yellow, could you help me figure out which slot the wires go into please? Thanks - ollie

You say you like the 801 controller ? But my god my 801 driving me insane it automatically shuts down when it has run for an houris this normal on the 801. ? It get bloody freezing if we go away for a weekend in the winter as we’re in the uk

That's pretty much how my Eberspacher sounds. My thermostatic controller is similar as well, easy enough to find a comfortable setting. I can sleep with the heater on without any bother, the heat is great. I use the tank fuel as it's cheap enough to run plus saves hassle, only one tank to put diesel in. I don't even see my fuel gauge move. last early March I ran it for twenty four hours, it maintained constant heat, used little fuel, undetectable by fuel gauge and probably used around 24 amps, can't be 100% sure but after using for a year I'd say this is accurate enough. If I still had home heating oil I'd perhaps use that but we now have gas, for our house, gas has worked out better for us. Home Heating oil, to fill a 20 litre container here is almost as expensive as ordinary diesel at times. If I lived in a van, I'd probably go red and also have a wood stove for free fuel when I could get it. The cons with a diesel heater is the battery drain especially in winter when solar is bad, it forces me to drive most days to put some charge in the battery unless at a campsite with plug in electric, In that case, an electric heater would do. My vans not well insulated, not very sealed up, it's a talbot express auto home factory conversion, 27 years old, so your mileage may differ in your van, hopefully you'll do better! Great vids Keith, cheers for taking the time to make and upload them 👍👍👍

pa maj the one in my crafter makes the sort of noise that suggests the fan is rubbing on something, it isn’t and I replaced it thinking the bearings might be rumbling, I am going to take it out and sort it out on the bench in my workshop. It may be resonating in the steel box under the van or there may be a problem with the PWM circuit in the ecu. The one in WAS is only a bit noisy simply because it has squeaky bearings I am going to replace those as an experiment. Despite the potential mess and the need to store a lot of wood a wood burner is looking more attractive by the day! We use about a wheelbarrow full every three days for the one indoors. Watch the clip I will link shortly, although a small van I think his was warm almost as quickly as via a diesel heater which surprised me.

@@CriftinsCampers I just checked out the link you put up Keith 👍 I have been looking at stoves for a long time now and the glastonbury made mini cyclops is about the best for the small size and price. Funny enough I have it saved in my bookmarks. My van would only take something like the FATSCO Tiny Tot or Pet, that's all I can afford space for without burning stuff lol. I don't like the fact that there is no viewing glass but they do run fantastic for a long time with very little smokeless coal briquettes in them, again, more to save my battery. I'm considering making something small myself, like in the link I'll provide but possibly upright. Lengthwayss, good for wood, upright Good for coal.

@@pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN That's very cool but it needs a baffle/damper plate unless he intentionally wanted to light up the sky! I think that would take me so many man hours to make it would be cheaper to buy one! I do have some Ammo boxes though...........

Hey buddy. Just wondering. My van still has the heater running through Genesis. If I were to disconnect the heavy live and neg, red and brown cables, could I then connect the heater direct to my aux batteries and it would work as normal using the fitted controller?
@CriftinsCampers
@CriftinsCampers 2 года назад
There is probably two live cables connected to Genisys one to a high current feed for the glow plug and blower, the other to a lower current feed that supplies the controller you would need to identify them both and reconnect to the Aux batteries via a couple of suitable fuses. The ground cable (usually coloured brown) should not need moving, hth.

Can you get a controller to give you cold air ventilation for the d4 what you know of i have a d5 which is huge but click the rotary control back 1 and I get cold air
@CriftinsCampers
@CriftinsCampers 2 года назад
The 801 has a vent only option however as it's only circulating the air already inside the vehicle the location of the air inlet in respect to the outlet would determine the efficiency. e.g in my Crafter the air inlet to my D4 is in the cab. so on a cold day it would be pulling cold air into the habitation area which wouldn't be a lot of use. But on a hot day or rather on days when the cabs hotter as a result of the greenhouse effect from all the glass then maybe it might provide some back ground heating.

This is probably an obvious answer question but can you disable much of the gensys system by removing fuses, is the actual loom of the van tapped into or actually rerouted and spliced?
@CriftinsCampers
@CriftinsCampers 4 года назад
In this particular installation there were a lot of fuses but in my Sprinter there were hardly any. Each genisys output is current rated within the module, so there really isn't a need for external fuses as well on the same circuit so I am not sure why they did it like this in this Boxer, it just made it far more complex! Every installation is different though but in general Genisys is completely separate from the vehicles core original electrics i.e lights etc, it is after all an add on system but I will repeat the above every vehicle will be different and there will always be a few cables that may need checking to see what they have done and why.

Do you know anything about the fan in the roof. Is it AC or DC powered.?
@CriftinsCampers
@CriftinsCampers 4 года назад
Richard Munslow the fans in my sprinter and in this boxer are both 12v DC rated at approx 40w so draw about 3.5A. The Genisys switch panel has an intake and extract button, the Genisys controller uses a pulsed soft start routine to reduce inrush current when starting up the fan or stopping and reversing it.

@@CriftinsCampers I have removed the genisys from tha ambulance but wanted to use the fan if I could, just not sure of the wiring, got the wires to a switch but nothing seems to happen.

@@richardmunslow7623 did it ever work if so try wiring it directly to a battery via a fuse. Might be worth taking it out double checking it's info label and that it only uses two wires etc also check it spins manually etc

For an idea of how quickly a wood burner can heat a van watch this link, I was surprised because a diesel heater takes a very similar amount of time but is a lot noisier albeit simpler in the process. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MmSY0zd6kxs.html
