I saw Y Tu Mama Tambien for the first time last year knowing little about it. What really surprised me was that hidden subplot about the state of things in Mexico. The movie requires some patience, but it’s outstanding. Adaptation is one of my favorite movies of all time. The video says it best: if you didn’t like the ending, you weren’t paying attention. The movie is very good, but that the guy the movie's based on is has (unsurprisingly)never stopped lying about himself(and making money from it) makes it harder for me to re-watch. I wasn't surprised though, just watching the movie the story sounded like bs - which is why I looked up info on him at the time. Journalists easily found out multiple lies in his story way back in 1978: whyy.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/frank2.jpg But people ignored it because they *wanted* to believe his story, and interviews made for good tv. He didn't do anywhere near as much(and didn't get anywhere remotely near as much money) as he claims - he was even in prison when he claimed to be doing things. The $2.5m he supposedly conned out of Pan Am, was more likely...$0. Likewise the money he supposedly got from all the banks was physically impossible. In reality he was likely little more than a petty criminal, and general a**hole, but has talked up a myth. He was immensely creepy with women, using fake recruiting of air hostesses as an excuse to do physical examinations of female students(after a short time there were multiple complaints), and even(bizarre as it sounds) manipulated his way into staying in the childhood bedroom of a woman he was stalking(from memory he also stole from her parents when he left), and so on. Likewise he didn't only steal from big faceless companies as he claims, he also stole from ordinary people & those close to him. The truth has become more widespread since a book about him was released a few years ago, though no doubt many people will still choose to dismiss often indisputable evidence.

I feel that way much of the time with E&R, but I think Roeper was just fine for the first couple of years (2000-02). When Ebert's decline set in following his cancer surgery in 2003 (a few months after this episode), the show declined in direct proportion because Roeper became the dominant half of the act. There was too much passive, gentle camaraderie in the later years and not enough combativeness and competition. Gene was sometimes ready to pop out of his seat with enthusiasm, but Roeper was usually just jovial and casual.

I acually have seen all of the films on your list. As I said in my own post I hated Adaptation and indeed I find virtually all Charlie Kaufman pretentious . I really liked that you had selected Insomina ( the original Norweigan film was even better) . Here is what I recall about WO . First film I saw of Alison Lohman. It had three women I am still willing to marry and it left me very uncomfortable in the good way. I am going to have to watch it again . I also recall that within a year or so Lohman was also in a film with Sam Rockwell that had a grifter thing going on ( Matchstick Men) . I am going to have to look to see where I can stream WO so I can look at it again. Speaking of Insomnia I would also be willing to marry Hillary Swank and Maura Tierney Both Insomnia and WO had great male supporting actors ( Nick Katt, Martin Donovan, Cole Hauser , Patrick Fugit ) . Catch Me If You Can is so underated which likely is because SS has had several films that were even better ( amazing ) and I would rate it as one of the three best Tom Hank's performances. Funny enough Road To Perdition may not make my Top 3 Hanks roles as for me Newman , Daniel Craig, and Jude Law really impressed ( and yet again another woman I would marry......Jennifer Jason Leigh). No wonder my marriage did not work out. @@AnimationNation2004

I enjoyed 'Minority Report' when I first saw it but the second time I realized it didn't make any sense. I have always hoped to run into Steven Spielberg so I could ask if the 'precops' had a bunch of 'pre-cogs' waiting in the wings for when the program went national. As far as it seems in the movie there are only the 3 and their powers seem limited to a small area. I have always wished that I could figure out how they planned to get volunteers to be in the program and since it was possible for the 'precogs' to make mistakes putting people in prison based on what they might or might not do seems absurd.

2002 is probably my favorite year for movies of this century so far, Minority Report is Spielberg's last great movie and somewhere in my top 5 of that year. About a Boy, Adaptation, About Schmitt were all great and 25th Hour met be my favorite movie for 2002.

Agree with Ebert on Gangs of New York, good movie, better than most because of Scorsese, but still weak. The script was poor and that's strange considering 3 of the credited writers each respectively wrote schindlers list, age of innocence, and one went on to write manchester by the sea. The thing was just all over the place, going from a personal revenge story to commentary on american immigration history (no doubt a reaction to the anti-immigration and jingoism sentiment going on post 9/11), and finally jamming in civil war history right in the middle of the climax of the movie. On top of that you had useless subplots with Brendan Gleeson's and James Broadbent's characters. This is even before getting into issues of Diaz's casting, DiCaprios bad and unnecessary accent, and DDL being allowed to be on an island with his acting while everyone watched.

It has little to do with sexism and more to do with how disjointed and maudlin the film is. It feels very stagey. I bet there were 40 better films that year, many of which have already been mentioned. I love Walter Chaw’s highly negative review of The Hours-it’s hilarious!

The Academy award for best animation film in 2002 was won by Shrek. Just let that linger a bit - Shrek, rather than 'Spirited Away'. As Ebert said, Miyozaki is the world's best animation film creator, and if he doesn't win, it is because somebody has a bias towards American movies. Truly sad - it's a bit when 'The King's Speech' won the award for best movie instead of the 'Social Network', or when Jethro Tull won the Grammy for best award instead of Metallica.
@flaccidusminimus2170

No. Shrek was from the year 2001 and it won Best Animated Feature for films released that year (the first year for that category). Spirited Away did in fact win for the year 2002.
