For one the battery doesn't like the cold it will discharge faster. You're a heavier rider plus the weight of an extra battery and tools. Having less tire pressure will have more resistance while riding.

So, what did you determine about your battery issues? I'm sure you 'balance charged' it 3x. I get over 50+ miles from mine. I have 2 usual routes, one that is 17 miles and the other is 32. So far, no problems. Look forward to hearing from ya.
@richarddkearney
@richarddkearney 25 дней назад
Yes, I did attempt to balance charge it several times using different methods people told me about with only slightly better results. It never has gotten as good as my first battery, so probably one of the battery cells is not the best. Now, over a year later, it gets around 90% of the distance my original battery gets. I am usually in power assist 1 or 2 and there are a lot of hills around here, so I don't expect to get your 50+ miles, but I do get in the 40s most of the time.

I’ve been riding with temps in the low 30’s. Heard people say you should let your battery warm up before charging. After 3 hours in a 75 degree house a infrared temp reader gave me a reading of 40 degrees on my down tube battery. So how warm should they be before charging?
@richarddkearney
@richarddkearney Год назад
I have no idea. I did learn that charging right after riding your bike is a source of a lot of battery explosions because the battery is hot. Who knew figuring out the best time and temperature to charge your battery would get so complicated.
@ThomasRogue-s8y
@ThomasRogue-s8y 3 часа назад
So you ride in the low 30's and you charge your battery! Anything else to add concerning a lower mileage per charge in such cold weather! After all; mileage drops significantly in ALL electric vehicles when temps hover in the low thirties!

@richarddkearney Год назад
I won't argue with that, but it is not like I use one battery only during hot days and the other battery only during cold days and then compare how far they go. I use both in hot and cold days and on the same route. I do like the idea of doing a test in 70 degree verses 40 degree to see how much difference there would be.
@ThomasRogue-s8y
@ThomasRogue-s8y 4 часа назад
As temps drop so do miles with all electric vehicles! This is a hard fact that all EV manufacturers and their promoters are so very reluctant to admit! Expect a drop in mileage of 25 to 30 percent when temps drop to 32 Fahrenheit and below. The drop in mileage really begins in low 60s and worsens exponentially from the low 40s on downward! Also, despite being 65 and owning a Velotric Packer 1 Cargo Bike I still cycle on a regular basis with a regular bicycle, especially so in winter; as without the exertion associated with a normal bicycle one can get very cold indeed! The only part of my body that gets cold are my fingers so I use silk glove liners and mittens as apposed to gloves as they do a better job at keeping fingers warm! The Packer 1 is equipped with cadence sensor and trying to keep warm on it is difficult due to the common ghost peddling associated with such ebikes! The bike gearing and power output makes it impossible for me to exert myself enough to keep warm! This upcoming winter I'll be my soon to be vintage 1995 Trek 830 Mountain Cross which I have modified for hauling groceries. I use panniers and a back pack for groceries and reserve the Packer for hauling much heaver loads!

Hey Richard. I recently decided to get a second battery for my Rad Rover 5 and I was trying to figure out how to carry it when I remembered this video and the longer rear rack bag you use for yours. I bought the bag and the 15 inch battery just fits. Thanks! The sides are fairly stiff but the bottom is just the fabric. So I took a piece of styrofoam packing material about 3/4 of an inch thick and cut it to 15 x 6 inches and put it on the bottom of the rack bag. It really stiffened up the bag and I don’t think I’m going to need bungee cords if the bag is fairly fully packed with other things around the battery to keep the bag from shifting. Cheers Richard.

Hi Richard. I finally got out today with my second battery in the rear rack bag with the packing foam. The packing foam worked great in the bag with my battery on top. The battery is heavy enough and the packing foam has enough give in it that the battery sank in a bit and with a few things on either side of the battery neither the battery nor the bag moved at all. The foam is about an inch thick and I cut it to 6 inches by 15 inches. My condolences on the losses of your father and mother. It doesn’t matter what age they are it’s a really tough loss. I see you just posted a new video. Glad to see you back riding. I’m going to watch it now.

That battery issue, I don’t know if we can directly blame Aventon for the problem, as they outsourced the manufacturing of the battery to another reputable company, like LG or Samsung. So I would think if there was a problem, then it maybe has more to do with the company that produced it. If you were to say the head unit computer was faulty, then maybe that would be more on Aventon. I think as with anything, there’s always a risk that something will be faulty. It’s wonderful that even though you’re having problems with it, that they are standing with you and still giving you the support you need to make sure you have the best experience possible. Samsung had phone battery issues in the past. It all will happen until enough data can get back to the manufacturer to change the design.

On my first ride the connector that the front Velcro strap goes through ripped completely out of my Lixada bag. The back strap slipped off the back of the rack and the bag and my battery were hanging off the side of my bike held only by the front Velcro that I had affixed to the seat. Lixada offered $5.00 to make it right. What a joke. I am returning the bag for a replacement. Richard's using a bungee cord or something else is a good idea. All that being said the bag did just fine on pavement, but going down a rough pot holed road was too much for the it. I made my longest ride, about 40 miles thanks to the second battery, and the rough road was over 30 miles into the ride.

Due to issues with my knees and the amount of hills in my area, I need the pedal assist to keep from getting injured and that doesn't work all the time.
