EBIKES: A mountain bikers review of the Haibike Nduro electric mountain bike (eMTB)

Love them or hate them ... eBikes and electric mountain bikes (eMTB) are here to stay and slaying mountains around the globe!
We sent downhill mountain bike racer Oliver Morris out for the day with a HaiBike nDuro ebike to see just what the "next big thing" is all about! Is it the future of mountain biking? Is it "cheating"? Is it a bit of both?
Thanks to Haibike for making this happen and to Oli and Jacob Gibbins for the shredding!

Next big thing? - Hopefully not: Cheating? - Definitely not; you can't kid anyone when you're out on the trails. What eMTBs do - IMHO - is extend your riding years if you're reasonably fit... And get your bum back in the saddle if you're unfortunate enough to experience debilitating illness or injury. I ride one & enjoy every minute: I use just enough assist to allow me to keep up with the young bloods - Just! I sweat buckets, just like them, but it's good to occasionally pass them on the loong uphill forest road 😈. My old bones will be 67 in June, but my brain never got past 18.

+Peter Hicks What I noticed is that eMTB's opens new possibilities for mountainbiking as a sport. You are independent of using ski-areas and expensive lift systems to go trail/DH for a full day or so. This will open for new places to bike which isn't possible with a normal MTB. All though many critics call it cheating I think this opens for possibilities to explore new places on a legal bike for a lot more people. It combines the best of mountainbiking with motorbiking into something that is accessible for many.

i want to get one because my hips are worn out and i cant pedal hard.. but i love going downhill!

This is the future for me. As I approach my 60s I know two things: I want to keep riding the trails and I find it harder and harder to do so. I'm not there yet and as long as there is an uplift service at the FOD I shan't need one but for longer trail riding definitely in the next ten years I'll be getting one.

The people moaning that it's not proper cycling/it's cheating/etc sound just like the people in the 90's that said putting suspension on MTBs was heresy/cheating, just saying.

They conjure my memories of hikers that opposed MTBs on "their" trails when I began riding in the late '80s. Live & let live, I say... after multiple battles with Lyme Disease, I wouldn't be out there half as much without pedal assist! Plus I'm too fast on my Haibike for ticks to attach now.
@sipapito

I got bitten by a tick but so far so good tested negative for Lyme disease no I was not on a MTB!

Best ebike video I have seen yet! I didn't think I would own one either, but now I do and love it on rides which have a LOT of climbing because I just spend way less time climbing and more time going back down. Goes back down better than my stumpjumper too.

+DERESTRICTED This is exactly what I wanted to say in the comments...I own one and just really is about getting back up there quickly. obviously the weight is a bit of a nagging point, but quicker uphill, more downhill= more FUN

+thefules yea the more I ride the more I realise that the technical climbs are actually as fun as the downhills too! As fun as uphill on an enduro dirtbike :)

I've bought haibike and this is masterpiece, normal climbing took me less like 2 h, now it's 35 min. love it

great vid. so would you buy one ?? looks like it's more than perfect for most of us. also a dam good workout can be had on the lowest assistance level. if your feeling extra brave the assistance could be switched off. meaning the e biker is working harder than the normal biker

Great impartial review and thank you for taking the time in doing it. I should add it was also good to see it being given a decent trial (your face when you said "jumps" lead me to believe you did not have high hopes in its survival!) I had* never even been remotely interested in MTB'ing (41 yrs old) however recently, I bought the same Bike to allow me to commute (I live at the bottom of a 2 long mile Category 3 hill climb up a crappy rocky path) to work. As I work near a mountain bike centre with trails iIt has brought out an interesting debate about Ebikes in general amongst friends of mine who do ride (Mobility scooter/Cheating/Lazy) etc. (diligaf) I have no interest in becoming an athlete or becoming better/quicker/stronger than the next person. All I know is that it they are jolly good fun (I bet you smiled a bit whilst on it) and fit the purpose in my case perfectly. This video is my commute back down the hill from work: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-frXC1DWnZ1A.html I hope you don't mind me sharing it. * I do now :) Subscribed.

That was about as informative as it gets. Could see the bike working as an MTB and the jumps were real jumps by a rider who shows he is not a novice. The information was clear enough without spruiking and I appreciate that. I ride with a fellow who is an awesome skilled MTB rider but has a gammy leg so ups are a chore for him and we, the rest of the bunch, feel a bit uncomfortable because as good as he is he is always overtaxed on the climbs and that's not good for his spirit. This ebike idea would work for him as he could ride using the assist on the ups and then ride around the weight to fly down. SO he would be in the mix all ride and keeping us able bodied MTBers honest. AND this is less than his good MTB anyway. Just need to understand if the battery would last 3+ hours
@Derestricted1
@Derestricted1 8 лет назад
+Plasmo20 it would last 3 hours if you didnt have it in turbo mode the whole time and didnt spend the whole time climbing. I can ride up 1200m, and back down, 32km loop over 2.5hrs and battery is then empty but its a very steep climb. Some people just carry spare batteries in their packs if they want to ride longer.

Great vid. I would own one if I was rich, Mainly cause where I ride has some great long downhills and no shuttle or lift back to the top. I rode one around a carpark and it feels quite natural

Can these bikes take a lot of rough surfaces for long hours at a time? I work as a courier and my current hybrid bike is always breaking a spoke though I am riding it gently. Alternatively will this be a great choice against damage thanks

No issues with assembly for me ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".

how a fully charged battery last ob the flat at cruising speed of around 25 to 35 kph?
@sipapito
@sipapito 8 лет назад
Depend on what type of trail or condition you ride on but the bike give you three different modes where you can ride more than 50km on a full charge probably more. you can also modify the bike to go faster but that is against the law in some countries!

He wouldn't own one because he is one of those Elitist fitness idiots that doesn't see how these could be great for those who just can't get that fit due to various medical reasons. How these could get those people into the outdoors and off the couches . I bet he is one of the type that just don't wait for the slowest riders, that lead to them giving up mtb.

The only way to go is to build your own. Commercial ebikes have weak motors. You can't do anything with 500 watts.
