First in a two part series on cleaning ebonite (aka vulcanite) stems. This video covers the first 2 of 3 stems, a reasonably maintained stem and one that needs a bit more work. Part 2 covers a heavily oxidized stem that needed some extra effort.
These are my methods, but not the only or even the best way to get the job done. For another very good option take a look at Daniel Shore's approach here: • come to my shop for a...

Very nice! I love the idea with the wood block, I have a couple stems that definitely could have come out better with that method. Looking forward to part two :)

+Nom De Tube Thank you for the comment! I've got a couple of those stems too, and it was one of those head slapping moments when I realized that I could use any flat wood block to protect the edge.

Thank you for those two videos...they're very helpful. Though I'd like to ask you If it was better to let the stem dries out a bit (few hours maybe) before you 'd use the mineral oil. Thanks again and greetings from Athens, Greece. Lefteris

I'm glad that you found it helpful. In my experience raw ebonite will oxidize fairly quickly, so I try not to wait. But that could be dependent on shop conditions, so you should probably experiment and see what works best for you.

My pipe stems I half assed cleaning. Then the first time I smoked them, oxidation popped up again BAD around the bottom. Hopefully doing this will get my stems back to looking nice!

Real fine, relaxed, and great delivery in soft vocal tones (you must have experience in teaching and/or delivery). I too am looking forward to Part 2. Do you have a system for internal pipe stem, pipe shank cleaning you have videoed? Thanks, John

Glad you liked it John. For the inside I just use alcohol and lots of pipecleaners. Best, Mike.

on the second stem you polished with micromesh, you started with 3600 wet. Did you go to dry sanding and if so at what grit?
@CaneRodPiper
@CaneRodPiper 8 лет назад
Yes, in this case I only wet sanded the first grit. I don't have a hard and fast rule for when I use wet or dry sanding, its more about the feel. Since I knew I would be sanding off some oxidation with the 3600 I used some water to lubricate. Once that was done, the surface was smooth enough that the next highest grit slid easily without a need for lubrication.

thanks for the video. but what if you smoke them without cleaning them. is this unsafe? is it toxic?

I can't say that it is unsafe or toxic, but I find it to be a bit disgusting. Plus the stems look better when they are cleaned and polished. Thanks for watching!
