ECG: common artefacts and how to avoid them

Demonstration of the common artefacts such as 50Hz (or 60Hz), muscle noise (EMG) and cable movements. The plot you see is the original data as it was recorded by our bio-amplifier. In this way you can see what happens when Vasso changes the connections and that it takes quite a while until the amplifier recovers.
50Hz mains can be avoided by using fresh electrodes and short cables. Remember that 50Hz is eliminated by using the differential amplifier. However this works only if the 50Hz from all electrodes is identical requiring identical electrode contacts.

I just want to know why voltage is maximum when ventricle is Half depolarized & half repolraized 'peak of R wave & T waves ' or 'bottom of S wave' Shouldn't it be fixed as long as there is a potential difference whether it is half or not??

Sure. There won't be any difference. They all do the same thing.

Hi, it is an amazing demonstration. Can you please suggest how to resolve the electrode movement artifact other than the one you suggested in the video? I am thinking in the direction of filters and for that can you suggest the frequency range of electrode movement artifact
@BPMbiosignals
@BPMbiosignals 3 года назад
It's hard to remove as it overlaps with the ECG frequency. Better you prevent lose cables.
@sheikhasher9191
@sheikhasher9191 3 года назад
@@BPMbiosignals thank you for your quik response. Does electrode motion artifact have a specific frequency range or is it the same as for muscle motion artifact?
@BPMbiosignals
@BPMbiosignals 3 года назад
@@sheikhasher9191 Motion artefacts are the motions of your body. How fast do you move? Roughly 0.5Hz - 3Hz so right where the ECG spectrum is.

I've added this info to the project web page under "Testing the bio amp: recording muscle activity (EMG)". There is also a link to the manufacturer's web page.

is the 50-60 Hz noise is coming due to ac mains around us or it's due to some muscular movements? sorry i did'nt get the 1:31 of your video..

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe it comes from ac outlet to which the diferential amplifier that she i wearing is conected.
@steven21736
@steven21736 3 года назад
The AC electrical wiring would create radio interference that would be picked up by the wires of the ecg
@userou-ig1ze
@userou-ig1ze 3 года назад
not quite sure why all of these issues couldn't be addressed by some lowpass filtering and percentile smoothing. Other than that, great video!
@BPMbiosignals
@BPMbiosignals 3 года назад
Because the frequency spectra overlap. If you do lowpass filtering (say below 10Hz to get rid of EMG) the heights of the R peaks will be drastically reduced and smeared out. Cable movements are pretty much around 1Hz so basically just there where the ECG fundamental frequency is. Not easy to remove either with a highpass and will only remove very slow cable movements below 1Hz but useless for running/jogging.
@userou-ig1ze
@userou-ig1ze 3 года назад
@@BPMbiosignals Thanks for the response! I need to try it. Would fast(er) sampling speed, smoothing, lowpass filtering, and percentile normalize work?!
@BPMbiosignals
@BPMbiosignals 3 года назад
@@userou-ig1ze No. Higher sampling rate has nothing to do with it. As I said above lowpass filtering doesn't work. Smoothing is also just lowpass filtering and doesn't work. Neither percentile normalisation. The best bet is recording a clean ECG in the first place and avoiding artefacts.
