Echidnas are egg laying mammals. Along with the platypus, the four living echidna species are classified in the monotreme order. Monotremes are mammals and thus produce milk for their young and create their own heat (along with other mammalian traits) but this unique mammals have a cloaca and lay eggs. Echidnas only lay a single egg during the breeding season, though they may have plenty of partners! Echidnas live in a wide variety of habitats from sea level to mountainous regions. They can live just about anywhere they can find food! These little animals come equipped with spines for defense which protects them from predators like dingoes, though they are still hunted by humans and are threatened by habitat loss as well as collisions with cars and other treats. Echidnas are able to enter low activity states - like hibernation - for upwards of two months at a time, though usually these states are shorter with periods of activity in between.
Scientific Name: Family - Tachyglossidae
Range: Australia and New Guinea
Size: 15-37lb (7-17kg)
Diet: ants, termites, earthworms, beetle larvae, etc.
Lifespan: 40+ years

Supposedly echidnas were given that name because, like the greek monster echidna(mother of the chimera, she was a human but instead of legs she had two snake tails. I mean, snakes have really short tails so I guess a more accurate term would be the lower bodies of two snakes instead of her legs), these animals have both traits associated with mammals, as well as with reptiles. Also I've heard that despite being more primitive than opossums, they are far more intelligent, being about as intelligent as some dogs.

Three long beaked species and one short beaked one? Why didn't they just call the long beaked ones Echidnas? So the male tries to nuzzle them? Where?
@AnimalFactFiles

The oddities of common names are confusing sometimes. 😅😅 The males try to nuzzle the females mostly on their sides, but basically anywhere they can get near her.

No doubt a very interesting animal but I can't understand how it has a pouch. If echidnas use pouches to grow their babies, shouldn't they be classified with marsupials? Or is the pouch somehow not enough to consider it a marsupial? I'm curious.
@paulgirtu2463
@paulgirtu2463 4 года назад
Afaik marsupials don't lay eggs. I don't know if pouched monotremes put their eggs in the pouch after laying it or if the egg just falls into the pouch automatically, but either way they lay an egg, as opposed to marsupials who, despite also having pouches(for the most part), don't lay eggs. Oh wait, sorry. You mean that if the marsupium is the pouch and "marsupial" was named after it, then why do echidnas(who also have marsupiums) not count as marsupials? As in, why wasn't "marsuipal" chosen to include both echidnas and kangaroos(for instance)? Well, I don't really know either. For one, this could be convergent evolution. As in, the echidnas got their own pouch independently from the marsupials. But if this is not the case, then, maybe people back in the day didn't know that echidnas had pouches so they just named kangaroos, koalas, possums, etc. marsupials, only found out that echidnas have marsupiums later on, and kept the term "marsupial" for historical reasons. A third option would be that afaik placental mammals split from marsupials, and didn't evolve giving birth independently. If that's the case, we share a closer lca(last common ancestor) with the marsupials than with echidnas, and calling echidnas marsupials could mean that just about any clade could be called "marsupial", including us. But this doesn't stand up too much because one could just say "it's not a monophyletic group".
@michaelp.4890
@michaelp.4890 4 года назад
@@paulgirtu2463 Thank you for the response. I think your first two points, if true, are not enough to not classify echidnas as marsupials in the modern age, during which scientists are all about cladistics and classification. I mean it isn't something that they would leave like this. The third point, the origin of marsupials and placental mammals, is something unknown to me. I do however understand your reasoning.
@rainpooper7088
@rainpooper7088 2 года назад
Because that’s just not how classifications work. It’d be like saying “If some marsupials do have placentas, why aren’t they classified as placentals?” Because they’re not placentals, they’re marsupials and everything else about their physiology points to that. Just having something that could be seen as a placenta is not how being a placental mammal is defined, and having something that functions like a pouch doesn’t automatically make an animal a marsupial if there are other aspects that point towards them being their own thing, such as laying eggs and lacking external ear cartilage. Not to mention there are marsupials that don’t have pouches too, so defining them by pouch only is shaky at best. Echidna pouches are also notably different from marsupial pouches (they don’t have nipples for example) just like how a marsupial placenta is different from an actual placental placenta, even if they serve a similar purpose.
@michaelp.4890
@michaelp.4890 2 года назад
@@rainpooper7088 Part of my confusion has to do with the little information provided about this pouch in echidnas. If this pouch has the exact same anatomy as the one that marsupials have, then my question is somehow valid. If not, it's understandable, as there's no reason to change the classification of a species just based on one trait. It is a fact that echidnas lay eggs after all, marsupials don't. In the end, these categories are our invention, constructs that are useful for understanding and differentiating between species.
