In this video we repair a Echo 58V Battery Pack. This pack will not charge. It shows 1 led charge indicator and reads around 50V on the output terminals. We find it has 4 defective cells and after their replacement we have to spend time troubleshooting the BMS error that occurs. Inside is interesting and I really enjoyed learning about the Echo 58V pack and I am very happy to get this pack back up and running.

What a great video! Thanks so much Thrifty! Just sharing my experience after a teardown of a weak but working Echo 58v battery. Opened it up and found one parallel pair at 3.62v. (the rest were 4.1V) I did not have to remove the whole ribbon cable to get at them. The biggest issue was getting the bad cells out of the pack and the new ones to slide in. That white plastic holder is HARD. After much cutting and file-ing I got 2 fresh cells in and the pack is like new. Thanks again.

Great video - just found your channel. Why you don't have more subscribers is beyond me. I was thinking about buying a Echo chainsaw - but had concerns about the battery from some reviews - and did a search for repairs - and landed on your channel. Gave me more confidence that I might be able to fix it if/when it goes bad. Really appreciate how you did a running monologue of related info.

Your internal reset saved me a bit of money. Would not charge, tried holding the button for 5 seconds but still no charge. Opened the pack, measured all of the cells, they were low but still 3.xx volts each. Jumpered the reset to ground and that did the trick. The battery charged. Finished cutting stumps after the pack fully charged. Thank you!

Signed in and commented on my first video just to say Thank You!!!. Other videos show the reset with the shorting of the Reset to GND but that didnt work. Then your video with the testing of each cell helped me find two bad ones. Ordered replacements and now have a fully functioning pack again. The hardest part was removing the bad ones. There is another video that did something similar to you with testing each cell and he stated to trim around the edge on the plastic and use a deep well socket to push it out - that did the trick. Thanks again for saving me to spend $65 to have it repaired or $150 for a replacement. Only spent $10 for the repair :)

Thanks, I just tried the reset trick by jumping the rst to gnd and it worked perfectly! You just saved me $200 for a new battery.

Thank you for this video, it helped me take apart the battery and check the cells. I noticed you checked the ohms of the battery, and the ohms were low. This is a good indication for resistance of a battery, as batteries are suppose to have a low resistance. A defective battery would have a high resistance. A perfect battery, which does not exist the last time I checked, would have 0 ohms. Don't take my word for it, the information on batteries is easily looked up.

Thanks for your comment. Yes that is confusing for some. Low internal resistance is in deed what you look for, and yes I have looked at many, many spec sheets and shared many on this channel over the years. I did not mean to be confusing. I only meant to show that a cell with zero volts and 0 ohms is a dead short. Do not boost, and I guarantee it is bad cell. I don't recommend charging those. Hopefully some will take my word on that. I should have mentioned that I have no device to truly measure internal resistance as used for cell matching and testing, I simply use the DMM as a safety check. Again not meaning to confuse. The reason internal low resistance should be low is so the cells do not drain on there own. Of course high resistance is open and will not charge. I thought it was obvious since I have explained it all before in many previous videos.

Greetings from Australia, that is a brilliant video, I have a 58V AEG pack that is identical in every way to the Echo apart from the name on the box. It has one pair of cells that have dropped to 3.7V and now I have the courage to attack it. As a matter of interest I see some of the Echo packs do not fully populate their BMS board, they leave out all the balancing resistors and associated bits, no wonder people have trouble with them as they age. I can now see why no one repairs them for a business, just too much labour time involved and also a few unknowns with the BMS board, a recipe for unhappy customers who just don't understand!! Greetings also to John P just below, I didn't see your comment earlier but you have exactly the same problem as mine and you were successful as I hope I will be.

Greetings from Augusta, Ga USA. Consumer electronics and tools are a labor intensive effort for sure. I hope we can all share what we learned and repair at least a small percentage of our failed devices. They are not built with repair in mind or any shared schemetics or knowledge like electronics in the early days, kind of sad. Maybe baby steps here, it's not always easy. Then again I have a Ego pack repair video where I shared a loose connection found on mine and comments start rolling in after watching they decided to try giving it a good tap or simply dropping it on the ground and theirs started back working, people are brilliant. I watched another video on this battery and there was no cell monitoring system installed like this one! I'm watching to learn what these batteries were like and hope to find a video like this on the new 56 volt they went to. I'm in the market for a chainsaw and saw the echo 58 volt was the best. Look all over and find out they went to that 56 battery. It seems like the duty cycle of the new battery is less than this one. Some have speculated that the 58 volt had larger wires on the windings than the new 56 volt causing the protection tho kick in and delay work. I'm a mechanic, not an electrician. I really admire the skills of people that know electricity. Very humbling.

These are sold as AEG 58V battery in Australia but identical internals and case. When you change the cells you should use the same type otherwise they may become unbalanced over time. Doing what you did is a fix but a more common issue we have is that there are 2 TVS devices that connect to terminals on the battery. They protect against voltage spikes and go short or partial short to ground when damaged. They stop the battery charging as the charger can no longer communicate with the board. They are tiny and underneath the board near where the wires join the board. They are 12v limiting TVS devices

Great video, I had issues with a 4 amp hour echo pack that was 2 years old but I called Echo and they replaced it under warranty without any trouble. It did however make me nervous that the packs might not be the best for the long run. The best cordless echo tool I have is the chainsaw. The hedge clipper is a bit heavy and the trimmer is good but I had an early battery with an issue so I have to remember to do the trick otherwise it shuts off all the time

Thanks for the information. I would think the chainsaw and string trimmer would be good by echo, but I do wonder about the TTI designed pack for sure. Sorry to hear you have had pack issues. Batteries have come a long way, unfortunately with BMS designs we still have a ways to go. Hopefully in the next 5-7 years it will be much, much better and should easily leave gas behind really. @@ThriftyToolShed Performance wise I'd say it meets my gas powered echo lineup for homeowner use. I got really frustrated with hard start and carburetor damage from ethanol and equipment sitting. A few years back I switched to only synthetic TrueFuel or the Echo version and never had an issue at idle or sitting. I let one trimmer sit for 3 years and it started right up. I only use regular gas in my mower and snowblower since those are used enough that fuel doesn't get stale. Now I only mow my 1/2 acre plot and am very happy with the power/performance/convenience of my battery powered Echo lineup. I would like to try some other brands; dewalt trimmer, chainsaw, makita, Ego but once you are into a system there is no point to have multiple chargers and batteries. Especially with the cost of batteries. For a homeowner with a less then 1 acre lot I think battery is the way to go. If I was going to do it again I probably would go with DeWalt, I like the universal design of batteries in their expansive tool lineup and they have been into battery operated tools for years and hopefully do a better job then Echo/TTI at battery packs.

@@jamesbubnick I have less than 1 acre as well and love my EGO equipment. The 40V Ryobi stuff (crap) I tried first made me love the 56V EGO tools once I bought them. I may would have tried the DeWalt if I knew more about there 60V FlexVolt system back then. They have come a long way. Unlike gas, I enjoy the learning on the repair of these cordless tools! The BLDC and Li-ion has been really good and what ever is next in the cordless platform is sure to be even better!

@@ThriftyToolShed Years ago I had a Ryobi and it just didn't last, in the long term it's much more expensive to buy Ryobi then Echo/Stihl etc....I've played a lot with fixing gas engines over the last few months and you wouldn't believe how many pieces of equipment I've found that have less then 5 hours on it with bad carbs. I've heard great things about the EGO line, just haven't yet had the opportunity to try them.

This website is great - There are several websites offering severely discounted Echo 58V batteries (~$50.00 - $59.00). Those websites are fake. If in doubt, call the company before you order and speak with a live person. If the mailbox is full, no one picks up the phone or calls you back do not order from that company.

Thanks mate, I did the reset on two of these packs I just got (I got a 58v AEG Mower, charger, and 2 'dead' batteries) for 150aud (100usd) and both batteries were fine, just needed a reset! No dead cells! all cells were within 0.01v of each other and one pack was at 3.7v per cell and one was at 3.9v per cell, pretty close to storage voltage!

I have three of the 2 amp hour batteries that were unresponsive when I pulled them out of the boxes new. They sat on a shelf for a few years. I bought three of the blowers when a store wanted to clearance them. Do you think it’s possible to revive them. I would be happy to send them to you to try if you are willing. I can also send you a charger to take apart if you haven’t gotten one yet.

I have the exact same issue, it's great to see this done in such great detail. Anybody can say just get this cell to fix it, but putting in the time to describe the whole process is very helpful. The only problem is I'm not sure where to get the cell. I tried googling it and I found a bunch of places that wanted to sell me hundreds, however I have just 1 bad cell. Can you make a suggestion as to where to get just 1 or some small amount?

Well I get asked this a lot and I have a video to answer a lot of the questions. I usually keep spare cells that test well from donor packs. I also buy some from time to time from 18650batterystore.com. You will want to make sure who you're buying them from is selling real name brand cells and not knock offs. Also using pack rating you can guess at a really good replacement cells, but it's always best of course to use the exact cells in the pack if they have a part number. Great job! I looked inside an Echo pack as well and noticed how tight the cells are stacked together compared to Ego's batteries. I put out a video comparing the two batteries and how long they took to charge when coming hot out of the tool, and the Echo pack took a LONG time to cool before charging would begin. The Ego started charging right away.

Well, I do not recommend just jumping a pack. You need to know the condition of the pack first. For example if you have shorted cells in the pack and jump straight accross a 58V charge the current will be very high and potentially catch fire or even explode. I do have a video on the EGO 56V pack using a Drok DC-DC converter to limit the output current to do this more safely if you do not have a power supply to limit the current. I would measure the voltage of your battery and see how low the charge is.

So I'm not an electronics guy but I got my 58 volt echo weed eater battery working after it stopped working over the winter. All I did was put it in my weed eater and cycled it from turtle mode to rabbit mode until it started running. I ran the the battery down and it is now charging perfectly.

This is an excellent teardown/repair of the Echo 58V battery pack. I have a similar rebranded "AEG" battery pack powering an AEG 58V mower. Unfortunately my battery is showing fully charged on the indicator but has no voltage at the +/- terminals. The battery pack has had only half a dozen charge cycles and now won't charge! Flashing red charge indicator. what could be the issue? The charger is working ok. The battery is out of warranty. Should I do a teardown and try the reset option you've shown. I've held down the indicator button for 5secs as a reset workaround, this option has been been posted elsewhere. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I have not had a AEG apart but it maybe similar. The 2 things I would check first is to see if the pack has a fused output. That would be a good reason the level shows on the indicator but you get no voltage at the output terminals. The other thing,if it is not the fuse, would be possible that the pack uses mosfets like alot of the TTI packs and they are cutting the power for some reason. Best of luck. Thanks for your comment.

Very nice tutorial! unfortunately all of my cells are down to almost 0V. I still might try to replace them. I have a 2Ah pack, and all of the RB1-13, Q1-Q12, C1-C12, and R1-R12 components are not poplulated at all, so I'm guessing it doesn't balance the 2Ah pack! The board looks identical otherwise, including the jumpers that are shorted/open!

Hello, I have the same battery when a led indicator goes down, my tool starts to stop by itself and I have to remove the battery and put it back to work, it stops again

You do have to buy more to get a better price and also save on shipping cost the more you buy at one time of course. BTW As far as time goes I had a lot of time involved in this repair and 80% was likely video and editing time and 20% on actual repair. Of that 20% which I would guess to be around 2 hrs. Over 45min to 1hr of that was taking the time to learn as much as possible about the Echo pack. The first and only one I have ever had to work on. So after learning what to expect this could be a 1 hr job. Excluding the time to rebalance any cells or charging that could possibly be needed.

What is the voltage between t1 and T2 is it crucial for the operation of the motor

For the benefit of anyone who finds these batteries still dont work on a tool or wont charge after the reset jumper technique, ive found another issue that can be fixed. U3 is a 3.3V RS485 serial communications chip that provides communication between the battery, charger or tool. The battery connects to the two smaller pins on the battery plug via some resistors etc. These parts are all on the underside of the board. In particular there are two very tiny diodes designed to protect U3 from ESD damage. On mine, one Diode was shorted to the Negative line. I don't know what the diodes type were, but best replaced with a single SM712 TVS diode. This is the proper ESD protection for RS485 bus lines. The Chip U3 a SN65HVD72D SOP8 chip is also damaged. If you have the tools to handle SMD rework these can be replaced under a microscope to get the battery going again. Moz

Thank you for that info mozziere1. One of my diodes , D8, was damaged. Mine was open. Just to clarify, when you say to replace with a single sm712 are you saying to remove D5 and D8 and replace both diodes with one sm712?

@@mb4392 yes, in the three batteries I have repaired the replacement with the TV's diode worked well. I have also learnt that the RS485 chip in the charger can get destroyed by a battery with a failed rs485 port. Similar fix, just replace the RS485 chip in the charger

Even though the voltage is really the same (they are both 14S). Unfortunately they have proprietary connections. For example the D terminal on the EGO is used for seemingly communication between the tool and pack and they are not the same. Many people use both of these for ebikes etc. That's done easier because you just simply use the + and - direct output of the pack. As far as EGO tools or mower working with other packs it's difficult. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for the video! With your knowledge of the inner workings, could you make a Echo to EGO battery adapter to use EGO's on your Echo by just duplicating the inputs?

It would work if we had the D-terminal totally figured out. I have a video talking about the D-terminal and how we need it to use the tools and how I have taken it as far as I can at this time trying to figure out the protocol. My latest video I was excited to see a aftermarket pack by Ruzixt available and bought one with the very similar BMS board so they have figured it out. The bad thing is the pack is no longer available and the company has not responding to any of my messages about buying packs or parts for the pack. So at this current time, we would have to use a EGO BMS to communicate with the tools. The only other possibility is using a ego pack but also having another pack in parallel with it to give more runtime for a Nexus power station for example, but not ideal! Thanks for your comment.

Great Job. I immediately took notice that where ever the BMS connected, the cells shorted, hmmm. Did I miss read that or can the BMS be at fault to a point maybe when heated from use?

Are you referring to when I thought the blinking led was showing me I had a NTC or temperature error. If so, it would not reset until I did the reset to the microcontroller.. I am guessing that either the monitoring not attached while I soldered the BMS back in or just the constant making and breaking of contact while installing the board back must have made the chip go nuts. No way to cycle power once soldered on so I tried the reset and got lucky!

@@MrBrymstond I see, it was really the connection next to the BMS connection on both sets that went bad. But very interesting for sure to see if others had failure in the same cells or if it's random. These Echo packs have been out for quite a while now so hopefully viewers will leave comments about the experiences they have had with there packs.

I wish I had time, I do get asked this often. I do not have a repiar service at this time. I work full time+ in a Industrial job and try to have time to edit videos to post. I just bought one. The battery the gave me won't power the saw. Charger says it's charged. Indicators show it's charged. DVOM shows 57.73 volts. No motor action. I'm going back in the morning. 30 miles one way. I'm not happy. UPDATE!!! The chain brake was tripped, released it and the saw now operates. But I'm not happy to have a "pre-re-furbished battery". Saves me a trip to big city on my week off though. thanks for listening.

Hiya Thrifty. I watched you process with interest as I have a dead battery pack too. However, all my cells ring out fine. The pack shows half full but won't run the tool for more than a second before quitting. When in the charger it just shows a flashing red LED. I'm wondering if the problem is an open circuit cell in the pack, not a short one. I haven't had much to do with these types of batteries and chargers so I'm fumbling around a bit trying to get a handle on how to test it. Is the BMS "smart" enough to detect an open cell? or will I have to start ripping the thing to bits and go hunting? I have tried the 5" second push" and your reset trick as I thought, like you, maybe the controller lost its brains and needed a good kick up the ar*e :-). This pack is pretty much brand new although sadly not covered by warranty as I am the second owner. Any ideas on how to proceed before biting the bullet and buying a new battery pack?

The only one I worked on was the one in this video for someone else, so I have no other experience with these. From your comment I would most likely connect a load straight off the + and - and see if the output drops off in any way and see if it a bad connection or a cell that is dropping off quickly? If the load test goes well, I would lean towards the BMS being a issue. I would then check the connections to the individual cells and also the NTC on the ribbon! @@ThriftyToolShed Thanks for that. I went on to watch your repair on the Ego battery also with interest. Troubleshooting an SMD loaded board with no schematic is an art form - well done! I'll try the load test as you suggest then I might have to break out the scope and magnifying glass and go hunting.

@@gkenjil Sorry, I didn't. I pulled out all the cells and they were all good. I figured it had to be a fault in the electronics but that was way above my pay grade😜 I bought a new one.

Where do you get the replacement cells? I have several of the batteries and over half don’t work. I have an Echo gas chainsaw and it’s great. It appears to me Echo has some design issues with these. I also found the customer service to be horrible

I keep lots of 18650 cells around. When I fully test cells and they pass with almost full capacity I label them with the specs form manufacturer spec sheet when available. In this case I chose the closest specs spare cells I had with the ECHO pack cells. Even for a used battery I still get very close in spec or it will cause capacity to be lower.(And Yes I agree) TTI could have done a better job on this pack. It appears ECHO is just licenced to TTI for the electric equipment. I really like some of the TTI tools, the 18v Ryobi is good, so is most Ridgid tools and the Milwaukee tools are one of my favorites.

I’ve had my echo tools for about 4 years now. No issues with my 3 4ah batteries. The ones we use at work however don’t seem to be long lasting, they still work but not for as long as they should. Those however get much more use than mine at home. Thanks for the video.

I've got one of these packs with a blown resistor at RB11. All the cells read 3.4V except the one at RB11 (0.68V). Is it possible it's just the blown resistor? If so, how do you tell which one is the correct 51ohm (1.0W or 1/4W)?

I did not have a resistor blown on the only repair I have ever done on these. So unsure on that other than looking at physical size and compare to datasheet dimentions of similar resistors, however, if you have a cell reading .68V then that is an issue for sure. Best of luck to ya!

They are 18650 cells. I keep lots of spare cells from almost new packs parted out as well as other cells tested very well for capacity. I just about always have what I need for spares. I usually do not recommend cells because so many times it's hard to verify that they are not fake cells. The main thing to make sure is that the seller is truly selling genuine cells. And then you want to get the same capacity. If you have a 2.0ah pack and you can tell they are all in series them you know you need 2000mah cells. The same cells would be in a 4.0ah pack if 2 cells in parallel and then were in series with others.

I have several bad ones. One runs for 3-4 seconds at a time. One reads 128 volts. Tried to reset on the board. In watching other videos, noticed they seem to reset with a full charge. Would it have to be fully charged for that type reset to work.

No, it's just a reset for the microcontroller. It should not matter if it's fully charged or not. Atleast I have not seen a pack that seemed like it would matter.

Hi great video. My 58v 4.0ah battery had no led status lights on the pack then would only flash red on the charger. Pack was reading about 55.74v. Took the case off and all banks were reading about 4.1v except one and it was reading 2.44v. Jumpered the ground and reset and the led lights lit and it started to charge for about 30 seconds then a solid red light on the charger. I took the case back off and manually charged the low cell to where it's resting at 4.1v. Now when I put it in the charger it's just resting fully charged with a solid green light. I haven't tried using it in my chainsaw yet to pull it down to see if it'll recharge correctly. The issue started when I stored the battery on a shelf inside the house all winter and apparently a cell got too low and was out of balance. So should the battery be stored on the charge cradle plugged in to prevent this or do I just have a bad cell?

It may be a bad cell. The other possibility is that the cell has something on the bms board pulling it down. I have seen this before. In my case it was a faulty cell. I could see this go either way. Keep an eye on the cell and see how it does, these are difficult to tell which is the cause because in the pack, it's hard to test current draw etc. Thanks for your comment!

@@ThriftyToolShed That's interesting you said that about a bms draw. I had the pack sitting here on my desk with the meter connected to the "suspect cell" watching for the voltage to rest and it was pretty static at 4.102 volts then it drifted rapidly down to about 4.087 for about a second then rebounded to 4.102. I left it there a while longer and I noticed it do it again but this time it only came back to 4.101V. It's the center top cell that the circuit board is mounted to, basically the forth bank up from the main battery connectors. I didn't watch it long enough to time it but it sure looked like a controlled on and off draw. I wonder if the bms pulses to keep all the cells balanced in storage but after that primary cell got too low it disabled the bms that's why it needed reset...? Then that cell got too far unbalanced and the charge logic wouldn't allow the charger to turn on.

Hi my snunber capacitor blew on my charger after a power surge. It's so burnt I cant read it. Any chance you can read yours and let me know which it is. It's on the input after the 5a fuse which also blew

I'm having difficulty finding 118650 20Q 2000 mAh cells. Can you recommend a source? Can I use cells with a higher mAh rating?

They all need to be tested as close in capacity and internal resistance as possible. I will do a video soon about replacement cells. Could replace all cells with a little bit larger capacity cells but not mismatch if that makes sense. I have had luck finding some cells at 18650batterystore.com. It is really is difficult to find the exact cells for replacement so I save and capacity test a lot of spare cells kept from older packs with still some life left in them. Some recycle centers or recycle bins can be a good find for older packs and building up spare cells.

Did you try charging just that 2-cell group? There is no effective charge balancer in this battery from what I have found so it will not balance on it's own.

Yes, I do have many battery repair videos that I mention checking cells charging, testing and even capacity tests on cells. Typically once these get far out of balance we know we have cell issues as capacity has had a major change in the cells pulled down low. Thanks for your comment!

All batteries have charged properly. I am struggling to reassemble without it shorting. I can’t figure out where the short is coming from. I just bought a solder pump to try that. Any suggestions to find the short?

I usually do not recommend cells because so many times it's hard to verify that they are not fake cells. The main thing to make sure is that the seller is truly selling genuine cells. These are 18650 size cells and you can order by capacity. So a 2ah pack will have 2000mah cells in them. A 5ah pack might have 2x 2500mah cells in parallel. The current rating as far as how much current the cell can supply is the next major spec such as 25A or 20A rating cell. The best way to determine this is with the part number if the cells if it has it on it. (Sometimes they don't). If it does then you can look up that cells spec sheet and order a close replacement also. Hope it helps, it's not easy always sharing the direct replacement. You have to search for the best for your exact pack.

I'm having trouble with my charger and battery. I have an Echo 58v charger and battery. The battery is only at 4.5v and the charger is blinking red. I checked the output on the charger and it's 4.5v. Is my charger bad and is there a way to fix it?

Battery will not try to charge if only 4.5v. most 58V systems look for over 38V to start charging output. I shared the video on the only experience I have on the Echo. This is the only one I ever worked on. Best of luck to you with yours!

Why ballacing resistors are absent on your board? On another 58v battery videos they are in place, so are there different PCB revisions?? Or maybe some Chinese clones are around on the market?

The + and - is the output and charging terminals for pack. The T terminals is used for the charger to monitor pack during test and charging. Using an thermistor as reference for temperature usually etc.

My 1 year old Echo battery quit. Called Echo, they finally called me back 5 hours later. Turns out the wrong battery was in the whacker when I bought it. BUT- Ryobi bought Echo 2(?) years ago and took no responsibility for the error of a whacker sittin'i in a store too long. I will aNever Buy ANY Echo (read: now Ryobi) AGAIN! Just screwed!

That’s TTI who manufactured these original series 58V ECHO tools under license. TTI also makes Ryobi, Hart, and Milwaukee tools. ECHO now makes a new line, 56V tools. 56v and 58v are the same BTW. 14 cells at 4v(4.15max voltage) each in both batteries

I actually have more questions than answers at this point to be honest. So, TTI used to have the license to make the 58V platform ECHO and sell it at Home Depot. I don't know if TTI is still involved or not, but it's odd that ECHO is coming out with an entirely new 56V platform. It's almost like the licensing to TTI may have run out? Another odd thing is that 58V was always just a marketing ploy, it's still 14S or 14 cells in series to make up nominal 56V @ 4V per cell. The older 58V platform simply used 4.15V max per cell evidently to market as 58V? Another odd thing is that the video above says the new 56V packs have 2.8 times the cells of most other packs. I don't know what they are basing that off of. It really doesn't make sense. I will say I have always liked ECHO products and have used the gas platform for many years so if they truly are making it themselves it might be a very good platform.

@@ThriftyToolShed I counted 28 18650’s in the new 56 volt. Is 2.8 times supposed to be 28 cells, but the marketing agent misinterpreted? Who knows. They have them in stock at my home depot. The market is saturated with cordless garden tools! As soon as I think I’ve seen them all I find out Skill, Toro, Hart and Atlas are among the dozen others making chainsaw as part of their lineup.

@@wheelstandr Yeah, that is what's weird all 56V packs will either have 14 cells for low capacity like 2.5AH or 28 cells for mid capacity like 5AH. The higher capacity packs like 7.5AH and higher have 42 cells. I did not understand the 28 cells being 2.8 more than others .... I guess we will see more about these soon!

Don't use soldering iron on Lithium ion batteries, they will loose capacity or even die, worst scenario - explode. Use spot welder instead

I do talk about that in many of my videos. I know people do it and my point (especially back then) was to show to do it clean, use flux and very quickly. I have mentioned that spot welding is the proper way and in many newer videos. I have of course shown that and now you can get very reasonable spot welders that are really good. Even 4 or 5 years ago I would rather do the careful quick solder repair instead of using the crappy spot welders available without spending hundreds of dollars. Holding the heat too long is not only damaging the cell it could be dangerous and I don't know how I missed expressing that in this video. Thanks for your comment!

For the amount of time, cost of new battery cells & effort, it's a lot more cost-effective to just buy a refurb'd battery, or better yet - TRASH this terrible Echo.

Although I mention in many videos how I get the cells, test for capacity and usually have many types and spares, still it's obviously not for everyone. Many of us enjoy learning and fixing these so we do it. I really enjoyed fixing the Echo because I learned it was made by TTI and the ribbon style flex cable was my first. It was also another TTI pack that had the micro reset and it did actually work. Thanks for watching.
