Evergreen was a masterly, epic comeback album from the always great Bunnymen.The band with this particular song and the epic sorrowful Nothing Lasts Forever were blowing on all four cyclinders.
More like the band the verve wanted to be , the whole evergreen álbum was a lesson from the real masters to the brand new branch of post britpop bands like travis et al ,at least coldplay did take notice and released a monumental debut before becoming a meme

I don’t think it’s meant to be taken too seriously. And listen carefully; he sings ”IF god’s above us...”. Many of his lyrics expresses his thoughts about whether there exists something divine or not. ”What if, no one’s calling, God then, must be falling” (Heads will roll, 1983).
