Nestled at the foot of Mt. Asama in Karuizawa, Japan, this 51 m² cabin designed by K+S Architects serves as a tranquil retreat immersed in nature. The site, shaped like a rhombus and surrounded by dense forest, provides a unique backdrop for a structure that harmonizes with its environment. Designed by lead architects Aya Sato and Nobuya Kashima, the cabin features multi-level floors that follow the natural slope of the land, creating distinct spaces that blend indoor and outdoor living. The lower level connects seamlessly to a garden terrace, offering elevated views of the surrounding trees, while the intermediate level provides a flexible, spacious inner room for various activities. The cabin's minimalistic design incorporates large windows that frame views of the forest, allowing natural light to flood the interior and fostering a deep connection with the outdoors. This project emphasizes minimal ecological impact, preserving the majority of the forest and integrating the living spaces with the natural landscape.
