Happy #EarthDay everyone! Mike and i made major major changes in our house a while ago to be more environmentally conscious - and REDUCE our use of plastic and single use items and increase our efforts to RECYLE / REUSE. My favorite quote about being environmentally conscious is "we don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. we need millions of people doing it imperfectly." So i hope you guys find this video inspirational to make some changes in your life, whether they’re big or small. I know Mike and i aren't zero waste yet but we try to make decisions to get better and better every day!
***DISCLAIMER: This was shot pre-quarantine, and i totally understand shopping for new products isn't a priority rn. And I recommend getting 100% use out of items you have NOW before switching. But if you're interested in purchasing any of the items in this video:

Try using glas straws! They look way more chic than paper straws. And I know it’s not very common in the US but instead of using a dryer you could just hang your clothes outside. Better for the garnment as well :)

Fun fact the city I live in Canada plastic bags have been banned for a long time you can only use reusable bags at the grocery store, currently the city has allowed them again for sanitary purposes during this time but yeah we haven't had plastic bags since at least 2010

Same for the total country the Netherlands EDIT: all bags cost like €0,10 or even €0,25 eurocents (paper ones) to stimulate people to bring their own.

I live in Canada and my specific county banned black garbage bags about 15-20 years ago, clear bags/blue bags only to enforce proper waste sorting. Composting has been done in my family for decades before it was mandatory. I'm always surprised when I remember not all countries and even not all provinces have a deposit on bottles (except milk) to encourage recycling.
@catchmetonite
@catchmetonite 4 года назад
East_Coast I didn’t know all provinces did not have a bottle deposit that crazy to me! It’s so strange to me when I go to others cities and they have plastic bags now
@JazMatt1

Rachel_victoria we do all bottles (juice, pop, alcohol) for refund deposit in NS but a few years ago I couldn’t find much info for Ontario on deposits on non-alcoholic bottles. I thought all of Canada did the same. Plastic bags are still not banned yet here but hopefully this will change in the future!

In Toronto we have a small organics bin for your counter that you can line with compostable bags so you don't have to clean the bin all the time. Also a good tip is to put some newpaper underneath the liner to soak up any moisture!

I love that you're leaning towards a more eco friendly lifestyle! Taking that step is super important, however I do think being eco friendly doesn't mean "toss all plastic I have and buy more stuff." Utilizing what you already have creates less waste. It defeats the purpose of becoming eco friendly by tossing things you have. Just a thought.

Stacey Onekawa i tried eliminating plastic water bottles for a year... I finally threatened my husband with--- the next box, bottle etc you bring into this house, I will pour it down the drain... no more plastic AND I made sure to get a new fridge with a water system... I know the filters are an issue but until we can afford to put in a system ,that’s better than plastic bottles🤷‍♀️🇨🇦❤️

Just recently learned of jute dish scrubbers that are compostable. Waiting on it to come in the mail to crochet some and use instead of disposable dish sponge. I make my own mesh produce bags and have been using wool dryer balls for several years now. Also use cloth napkins at dinner time and unpapertowels for clean up. It’s feels so good to save Mother Earth.

I have a small counter top compost bin which I empty into a larger 5 gallon bucket which gets picked up weekly by a service. In Philly we don’t have a compost network yet but some cities do or you can drop off at the farmers market. I use my coffee grounds to fertilize my fig trees as well as egg shells to help my orchids constantly bloom. The next thing you guys should do is look into solar panels, Tesla has nice looking ones.

That intro!! Hahaha - in my house we use small towels to clean the kitchen spills instead of paper towels, we always recycle everything plastic/cardboard, and instead of ziplock we use Pyrex/tubberware. Idk if it's an Asian thing, but my grandpa and other family members have had a combined colander thing like that since I was a little kid :)

I don’t consume any meats. I do not visit Starbucks anymore because of single use waste. When I fly, I decline the drink (plastic cup) because I have my own water bottle. I have reusable shopping and ziplock bags and also wash my disposable ones. I always turn down styrofoam and I‘ve never purchased paper plates. I also take my own real fork/spoon to work lol. Small things that add up. ☺️

The Full Circle Clean Again cleaning cloths from the Container Store are great. They are made from 80% recycled material and can be thrown in the washing machine. They’re a good substitute for paper towels and really inexpensive. I’ve been using them during quarantine since paper towels have been tough to find in stores, but I plan to continue using them.

Disposable is the dishwasher lol. I love disposable bags I may look into these Reusable bags. I mostly need freezer disposable bags though . The wool dryers balls leave my clothes damp because the wool balls take so long to dry not a good option for me. I get glass containers from Tjmaxxx.. I miss that store . Mike did Jen cut your hair looks good. Some of these items are cool but they are kind of small. I like the compost idea but farmers market aren’t everywhere in NYC. Good video!

I'm always confused on the glass vs compostable debate. Since glass breaks and takes a million years to decompose, is it really more eco friendly than using a single use compostable item that maybe takes more energy to create? I'm genuinely open to opinions and suggestions.
@JenAtkin
@JenAtkin 4 года назад
it’s definitely more nuanced but for something like water bottles we don’t really ever have to throw them away x dont need to worry about them decomposing
@jasminecalderon4990

JEN ATKIN Yes, definitely! The only reason why I bring it up is because I tend to drop things and worry about what i’d do with the broken pieces after. I did a quick google search and it looks like certain types of non-coated glass can be melted down and used again so I’ll just do some research before I purchase. Thank you!

I moved to Germany and it's INSANE how wasteful the US is compared to some simple consumer changes in Germany. No plastic bags when shopping, you have to bring your own bag, also return your plastic bottles for 25 cents "pfand," most of the garbage gets recycled one way or another (organic, paper, plastics, etc). Returning to the US is such a backwards culture shock seeing styrofoam cups and so much single use plastic.

Just a little constructive feedback, you said that you bought some things from amazon and while they are reusable products, the way that they were made is also something to think about. Making the switches is great and educating people too, but make sure that the places you buy from (for the future and anyone else reading this) is also eco friendly otherwise it’s kind of a similar situation to companies that greenwash (essentially fake ecofriendly).

Love your eco-friendly videos. You said here in CA you'll get shunned if you use plastic straws...I dont think so because the amount of gloves and masks there are thrown on the street, 😒🙄 smh. There is still alot of people that dont care about trashing their environment. It's sad
