Ecologists with the help of EU funds are saving the landscape for ground squirrels.

Public awareness is also important.
According to Czech legislation, the ground squirrel is a protected and critically endangered animal species. The project "Ground squirrels for the landscape, landscape for ground squirrels" focused on research, monitoring the ground squirrel populations, but also on the restoration of locations with a suitable habitat for these animals. Since it was an EU cross-border project, it also involved experts in Slovakia. A specific protection of ground squirrels has not yet been implemented there, and this cross-border project became the basis for Slovakia’s own rescue programme.
