Yes sure, you can. That's my specialization. There are basically many tools available for the larger evolutionary goal, including plant anatomy, systematics, phylogenetics, plant development, phylogeography, geomorphometrics, phylogenomics, etc. Your research questions would determine what tools and approaches you use.
