Iraqi here, I grew up with US sanctions, I can say with some authority sanctions don't work unless the goal is to make people suffer, because that's all they do! few important points: 1. The Iraqi government made sure to weaponize the sanctions to make people hate the US, like Duh! and the Iraqi government for all it faults did introduce a rationing system that was a literal lifeline for millions and at least on the face of it they looked like the good guys struggling to keep people afloat against the evil sanctions, Iraq at the time was cut-off from outside media, so no outside propaganda, I guess these days the propaganda does more damage than sanctions. 2. Iraqis got creative and productive with time, combine that with the food for oil deal in the late 90, we actually got much better at dealing with the sanctions, we had our own industries making TVs and fridges, we went from eating rice with weevils and not knowing what chocolate tastes like because it's so expensive to actually OK quality reasonably priced food, by the 2000s things were almost normal, because we achieved a good level of self-sufficiency. 3. If the sanctions do "work" wouldn't that entail eliminating the need for military intervention? so what was the 2003 invasion all about? you want to tell me all the rice full of weevils was for nothing? all for you to turn around and decide you want to invade all the same? So yeah, to me the sanctions are just that time people were miserable for a bit, survived by perseverance and hard work, then had their country destroyed regardless, waste of time!

"People are doing things that we don't like or that doesnt benefit us! That's not fair! Let's phuck them up. It's only the moral thing to do, cause we are, obviously, the good guys!" American policy in a nutshell. The worst part is that both sides do the same thing, and the public is always for it. Exceptionalism at it finest.

The outcome of sanctions is dependent on who is doing them and who the target is. Also, the situation.

The economic pressure may also have blowback, as Maduro has recently floated the idea of trying new economic configurations- paraphrasing on my part, but the implication is a continuation of the Revolution and a move toward socialism

The current political system is a bourgeoise democracy so a continuation would be unlikely, if were lucky there might be a new one instead

Is weird how often americans talk about latinamericans (as migrants), in favor of them or against them. But that never translates in curiosity about latinamerican countries. I get the white nacionalist are not going to be curious about it, but is weird how little leftist-liberals know or care.

I literally just had this conversation with a conservative last week. He was going on about "illegals" having the right to arrest people in California, and how no "illegal" has the right to tell him what to do...... we live in CT, lol. I asked, "do you think youre better than a migrant?" No answer. Then I started to tell him about what the US did to those Latin American countries and he started telling me that terrorists from China and Iraq are the majority of who is crossing the border. No point in talking to someone that crazy.

My hot take: If animals have the right to migrate in search of resources, then humans should also have the right to migrate in search of resources. Borders are pretend anyway.

It's why I stopped watching libs like Vaush because he talked about migrants like numbers. These are people. Hasan talking directly about sactions and nun raping war crimes the CIA trained their death squads to do is much more cathartic and actually shows you the effects the US have on the world. Knowingly too, Trump knew sactions would cause mass migration from Venezuela and what does he want to do now? Deport them. Use them as slave labor in ICE camps which is what they were already doing

12:30 What he says right here is not entirely accurate. Our sanctions against Russia and the destruction of Nord stream pipeline have not had as much of an affect as intended. Russia's economy is stronger in spite of these. Our sanctions typically devastate but not in this instance.

It is misguided and counterproductive to compare the current US support for a candidate to the severe interventions and CIA roles during the Cold War, as today's US involvement is far less severe. The immediate issue affecting Venezuela rn is the brutal dictatorship of Maduro's regime, which has systematically dismantled democratic institutions, suppressed political dissent, and violated human rights. His government employs oppressive policing state and exacerbates economic hardship, plunging the country into a severe humanitarian crisis. It’s also crucial to understand that Venezuela's dire situation was already critical long before US sanctions were imposed. Under Maduro and his former predecessor the country has already experienced widespread corruption, hyperinflation, and a collapse of public services, which have collectively driven millions into poverty and forced mass migration. That’s why he’s widely unpopular across the political spectrum, it’s not a hard concept to grasp. By fixating on the narrative of US intervention, Hasan diverts attention from the real suffering of the Venezuelan people and the intrinsic failings of Maduro's governance. Such a focus overlooks the root causes of Venezuela's turmoil which is the repressive and autocratic actions of a regime more concerned with maintaining power than the welfare of its citizens. This misdirection impedes meaningful discourse and effective international response to the genuine needs and plights of Venezuelans. Hasan and some western leftists should do better and educate themselves more on the matter

It is not “less severe” At all, the United States uses the OAE to actively administer policy in our countries. The arm of the US now in all of our countries went from using the military to utilizing journalists, everyone in the opposition of all the soc dems in any Latin American country has direct tieds to the United States and their reporting is word for word taken out of New York Times and Washington post, not to mention sanctions are a real violent action that is making 100s of thousands go to hunger and experience poverty and lack of medicines. You are lying and helping the Us empire this is not about maduro or any leader the problem is US intervention and meddling that has never stopped since you became a country, the first thing you did to us was stealing half of Mexico since you have never left our region alone.

Two things can be true at the same time. Venezuela has been destroyed by an Imperialist US and their own autocratic corrupt government. I still think the US intervencionism narrative has value because that shows that many of Venezuelas problems are going to be there still despite the change of government. Not saying Maduro should stay obviously.

@@ericktellez7632 Comparing Venezuela's current situation to the severity experienced by the US actions during the Cold War is fundamentally misguided, the differences are stark and indisputable. The Venezuelan crisis began long before the US sanctions of 2019. The initial sanctions, imposed in 2014 under the Obama administration which targeting specific individuals under Maduro administration, were relatively mild, as noted in the videos Hasan reacted to. The crisis in Venezuela has deeper roots in systemic corruption and flawed policies that predate these sanctions. Under both Chávez and his successor Maduro, Venezuela has endured widespread corruption and economic mismanagement. Chávez's policies, such as extensive price and currency controls and an overreliance on oil revenues, created an economically fragile structure. These policies led to severe shortages, hyperinflation, and a lack of economic diversification. The concentration of power in the executive branch under both leaders eroded democratic institutions and checks and balances, fostering an environment where corruption thrived unchecked. This centralization weakened institutional accountability, further destabilizing the economy and undermining effective governance. Particularly under Maduro, the regime has relied on repression to maintain control. He has used a combination of violent suppression and concessions to placate key segments of the population and consolidate power. While the government has cracked down on political opposition and independent media, it has also sought to co-opt or neutralize potential challengers through patronage and selective tolerance, offering benefits to those who align with or support the regime. It has allowed Maduro to remain in power despite widespread unpopularity across the political spectrum. By controlling key institutions and employing various means to suppress opposition, the regime has managed to maintain a facade of legitimacy while failing to address the underlying economic and social issues fueling public dissatisfaction. Venezuela's economic collapse is largely a result of internal policy failures and corruption, exacerbated but not initiated by external sanctions. While these sanctions have undoubtedly worsened the situation, they are not the primary cause of Venezuela's economic collapse. The core issues lie in the country's internal governance failures and systemic corruption. The sanctions, rather than being the root cause, represent an additional layer of pressure on a system already weakened by its own deficiencies.

Curious how the country got worse off when america lifted sanctions from Venezuela though, I wonder where all the money america spent buying oil from Venezuela went to?
