I flew Malaysian from MEL around 18 months back, transferring to JAL at KL for the Japan leg. The 330's were very dated, but they are being replaced with some A350's on the MEL run. The A330's had an economy 'extra legroom' cabin, just behind business, wasn't much more than regular Economy, and also had priority boarding & an additional baggage allowance as part of the deal. The JAL 787's were much nicer to fly in than the MH 330's. Also if flying MH, and transiting KL without oneworld status, you can purchase lounge access to the MH Golden Lounge, this was around AUD$90, which was well worth it. Especially if you have a layover of more than 3 hours or so.

Thanks for your comment, I generally find economy food poor, but this was hit and miss. A couple of meals were ok but generally very poor.

Thanks for your kind comment, I chose them based on Oneworld benefits and price. I think my flights were in the region of £1200, Christmas one may have been a little more expensive. Qatar was £1700 for the same dates. I'd say if you can save a bundle then use them, I'd use them again with the same situation, just be prepared. I've just got off a Qatar economy flight from Melbourne (13.5 hours) and the food was considerably better, I felt the pitch was good and the recline was excellent (although good recline = large invasion of your space when the person in front reclines). @@mygreygapyear I paid to do £1.2k for LHR-PER-SYD & SYD-SIN-LHR with Qantas for November 2023 featuring the QF10 & QF1 flights. Its not easy to find travel hack deals on the EUR-AUZ market unlike EUR-USA.

The frog egg dessert is tapioca pudding with a brown sugar syrup (I think) - its very common in ASEAN but the tapioca balls (or pearls) are a more common sight in milk tea. It's a slightly odd texture, granted.

I always grab a shower at the mid point, reset the body clock and go again. So even if your body's telling you it's time for breakfast after a hot shower grab a beer and a chicken curry but deffo not a start the day kind of meal. IF I'm slumming it in economy it has to be an exit row! (too old and grumpy to be stuck in a middle row in cattle classwhich tbh I was happy with years ago)

Always take a challenging book too. They never run out of power. In the aftermath of MH370, they offered J flights to Sydney for £2K return - I wish I'd bought ten, not one. When you transit through KLIA, you have to go through security again before boarding (unless it's changed). The only thing worse than ultra long haul in Economy is a bad ultra long haul in a premium cabin.

Thank you for your comment, £2k round trip, what a stunning bargain. Security is still at the gate in Kuala Lumpur, it's not something I'm a fan of, I prefer to get transit security out of the way and then run from the lounge at the last minute. On one of the trips I ran from the Golden Lounge to see a large queue of passengers waiting for the scanners, which seemed odd, but I sat down and waited for the queue to go down. About 15 minutes later I was asked if I was travelling to Melbourne and I said yes to which he shouted back to the gate "I've found him!". There were two gates using the same scanners, the people in the queue were going to Hong Kong 😂 Thanks for your comment, Phil Phil

Economy by day is fine but night flights are tough when trying to sleep sitting upright.

Thank you for your comment, I agree about economy day flights, 10 hours leaving in the morning is a breeze. I can sleep upright if I can recline and have the seat next to me empty though.

I consider myself an American Airlines short-haul expert (LOL!) and all I can say is I'm so jealous of these Asian carriers and their meal service. All I get at American are either mini pretzels or Biscoff cookies and when I'm tier point running, that could mean at least 4-5 mini pretzels and cookies in a day. By the way, I've got a new video out about Oneworld and would love to get your analysis. Poke! - Red

Thanks for your comment, you're Oneworld video is well worth a watch for anyone who's interested in points and status, I won't spoil it but is different to anything else I've seen. Short haul economy is the same with BA, you get a small bottle of water and a tiny slice of cake. Thanks, Phil

Mh used to have first class previously and planned it for the a350 but aftr their financial fiasco they downgraded it to business suite instead hence tht smaller lounge is for business suites pax on a350 as well as status pax...mh in general is underwhelming..their new 737 max is stripped out of any ife which is a stupid decision and make them look more like an lcc..mh is way below sq definitely and in terms of cabin comfort may be at par with philippines airlines.....

@@mygreygapyear one word..mismanagement aka corruption..tht lead to mh current state..previously it was known as one of d best but now just mediocre..ull still find one of d best cabin crew who will treat u like ur their guest though..and very naturally friendly

Many years ago I needed to rush back to the UK from Oz. I flew Malaysia as it was the first flight I could get at such short notice. My wife then upgraded my UK bound leg so I was ‘rested’ and able to drive up to the Cotswolds as soon as. Anyway the whole flight was sat next to a fella who drank like a tap and the was so drunk he was unable to even bother getting up to the loo, so he just wet himself in the seat. Not just once but constantly. The flight staff wouldn’t stop serving him beer and didn’t seem concerned that when he did get up the seat was soaked, as was he. I asked to be reseated many times and was told - sorry no seats. Of course 1st was empty and we’d paid full fare business class so you’d think an ‘upgrade ‘ wouldn’t be too much of a stretch. of course I’ve never flown or considered MA again!

Thanks for your comment, sounds horrendous, why they didn't just cut him off is beyond me. As Peter has commented, the only thing worse than a bad long haul economy flight it a bad premium cabin flight. Although the flights with MA weren't the best (nothing as bad as your experience of course), the cost of getting in and out of Australia at the moment is so expensive I would consider them again if the price was ok. The status benefits would be a factor too.
