The credit/debit card behaviour is also my exact reaction to that same situation. As soon as someone tells me to do an absolutely obvious thing, I make sure to take longer to do that thing. For my own amusement. I've got all day dude. Have you? My personal favourite was crawling over the speed humps that were installed all over the urban streets where I lived until the turn of the century. To supposedly slow speeding cars down to a safer 20mph from the standard 30mph. Anyone who was speeding through tight streets packed with parked cars and small children is an arsehole. They're not about to slow down just because the road has a bump in it. Just that you're now going to have an airborne arsehole as they fly over each hump, with no control over the car whatsoever. Me? I used to leave the house early every day, and crawl through the streets to the main road at a solid 5mph the whole way. Often dragging a tail of cars behind me. All having to do the same speed due to zero overtaking possibility.
If I had the possibility of screwing up and creating a black hole at work, I'd probably drink a lot harder after work than the average person too. At least then I probably wouldn't notice the world imploding around me.

There are attractive nerds as well. The thing that differentiates nerds from wannabes is the word "such". "I'm a nerd." (yeah, I'm passionate about this and your opinion doesn't matter) vs. "Hahaha I'm *such* a nerd, lol." (PAY ATTENTION TO ME, MY SELF WORTH IS DEFINED BY YOUR ATTENTION)
