While promoting "History of Violence" at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, costar Ed Harris caused some tension when describing his own notion of "violence."
Oh please. You celeb worshippers are exhausting. He’s a mentally unwell man who gets overpaid to memorize lines. Like most actors, he’s also a narcissist
Yeah, but Ed Harris definitely had anger issues. He allowed his dedicated acting to trickle over into his everyday life and it has negatively effected his personal affairs. It's actually kind of sad actors allow themselves togo this far in the public eye. Most never make it back to their former selves and become revered by the audience. It's really quite sad to see actors and actresses crumble like that. That type of behavior should never be condoned.
this video was edited to make it seem like everyone politely got up and left after his demonstration. ed harris is one of the most underrated actors of our generation and this wasn't a "meltdown"
Man, were they all scared after that? Seems like they politely left and Ed just got up like nothing happened. Wonder if he was tired of doing these press junkets.
this is an incredible actor, on a whim and a moments notice, showing you what violence is: irrational, impulsive, triggered, uncertain, fearful, hateful...so many things he showed in just seconds. he was ACTING. he wasnt mad, he answered the question in an atristic way and with more of a punch than any combination of words.
No.. I take that back. After lookin @ it a second time, this video was clearly edited.. Given how old that movie was, I'm sure i'd know by know if he really had a melt down like that. BTW, History of Violence is a classic and needs a sequel or a prequel
You got a mean streak in you Sturmraist you know that, Sturmraist you got a mean streak. You bring that shit up, a' my volume, you were on a bad, when I brought it up to you, you'd harbor it, you'd harbor it a long, long while and you'd be right, Fuck the Machine? Fuck the Machine. FUCK THE MACHINE!!! What is this courtesy class, you're fucked Sturmraist.
I'm pretty certain the people at that conference didn't think "nigga" when referencing Harris. This was in Canada... most of the people who use the word "nigga" can't stand cold weather.
I know you commented this 2 years ago but I need to let you know that this is one of the single funniest things I’ve ever read. I laughed really hard by myself
I was there. You missed it. The producer scolded them all to shut up and pounded on the table before they started rolling. Hence everyone and Harris's reaction. You ever want to genuinely piss off a bunch of 60 year old men, treat them like children and imply a threat of violence. Bad idea.
It wasn't actually that grainy, originally, the distortion is due to framing and formatting conversion without any touchup to compensate for the loss of definition that comes with the stretched width
Another great performance by Sir Edward Harris! Nothing compared to his magnificent dance routine in that oscar laden cinematic masterpiece "Creepshow", but riveting, nonetheless.
Very convincing, brief and straight to the point. There were no more words needed to explain what violence is about. Actions can speak louder than words that is why he is into acting.
You can always spot the truly great actors when they have the ability to flip a switch to a scary persona and make everyone believe, albeit for a small portion of time, that they're actually angry.
I remember when I was in college, the people in the classroom next to me called campus security on me. I was reenacting a play in theater class and I was supposed to be angry. Apparently, the Act was so convincing but I got escorted out of the classroom before my professor catch up and explain. I was laughing my ass off.
I think this says a LOT about how GREAT a performer Ed Harris is that he can SILENCE THE ROOM and CONFUSE EVERYONE within a few seconds like this. It's also funny that most people have so many different reactions to it.
Not a treasure, just a great actor. National treasures should be people who help other animals, including humans, since we are animals ourselves. Essentially, people who do good for humans and other species of animals that aren't human. Those people are national treasures.
I know it’s my fault but if nobody talks about it at breakfast tomorrow morning and I do better in school... I know he maybe won’t be how he is anymore...right?
@@tradewins He meant that an Oscar is not important. Many of the greats never got one, or got enough. Those awards often go to mediocrity. That's what he meant was not important. Harris is a great actor without one of those awards.
I saw Ed in San Francisco airport back in the 80's on a white courtesy phone SCREAMING at the top of his lungs about his ride being late. The man has anger issues.
the guy is a fuck1ng idiot, seems to have anger issues and whatnot, he's there to talk about violence, not to act violently, he gets paid to act in films, not outside of it, and all you saying this is briliiant, what an actor, etc, are a bunch of mor0ns, i'm really disappointed at the human behind the actor.
I saw this a while ago and thought the guy was being a dick. Now I see it, he didn't hurt anybody, it was a different response than anticipated, it actually seemed interesting to me, on the nature of violence, it's random, disturbing, uncomfortable and often irrational. I'm either looking too much into it or this guy lost the plot.
I don't think he was actually mad I think he was just acting it out and explaining "What is anger?/violence" he did a friggin great job. Abyss is my favorite movie with him. Hell I gotta watch that again(hope there is an hd/blu ray version of it somewhere)
He threw that thing over his shoulder with no regard for who he hit or what it damaged. To all those apologising on his behalf saying he was acting, why not just admit that he fully lost control in that moment and was obviously frustrated at something. The crowd was not in on any joke and you can feel the tense atmosphere in the room. People wanted to file out of there as quickly as possible, especially the interviewer. If the interviewer had not handled that so carefully someone could have been hurt.
@@Ihavehadmanynames7779 that thing bounced! We'd be having a whole different conversation if it had struck an audience member in the eye. Ok ok so... your argument is that... he was in controll the whole time? And I'm a snowflake for pointing out that he obviously wasn't?
@@jurjenvanderhoek316 Most people don't, tho. They just know it by watching pixels. To experience physical violence in real life, or even just the threat of it, is a different beast. And I think this movie fails delivering that. Only movie where violence really felt real was Once Were Warriors, for me. No goddamn square-jawed prime male fighting off thugs... just a drunken macho man ruining his life and family with his fists. Violence is deranged, and Ed was going for that.
I LOVE Ed Harris in any movie. He’s got a very commanding presence and is a fantastic actor. He was awesome in this movie and “Enemy at the Gates” is another one he was great in.
Edited out of context. Harris did not have this reaction at that moment and was in the middle of describing the deeper nature of violence. He’s being physical which may alarm people but it’s a bit of an eccentric way to make his point.
You can really tell he was channelling some powerful and performative thoughts here. The silver lining for me in all this was that he wasn't promoting a film called "Taking a dump in a conference room" at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival and he wasn't being asked to describe his own notion of "taking a dump".
Ed Harris , I Love you as a true fan I really agree with what little you said ,But it meant a lot. I do not feel it was a melt down. You said its violence in a movie and that's all it is a movie ,That's what actors and directors get paid for. if People are against it stay home , Shut Up , Don't watch it ! Keep up the good work Mr. Harris.
So that's a "Canadian" thing to call it a meltdown? So no other country or news media, journalist, etc would want to call that, whether it's accurate or not, a "meltdown" in your small mind? That's a " Canadian" thing to you? Gimme a break! What a lame ass comment!
Without a doubt one of the most underrated actors of our time . One of my fsvorite. You have to check him out in the movie Jackknife. Unbelievable proformance. Thanks Ed. You are a Great Great actor.
Ed Harris has been honorably and dutifully the husband and father for more than 32 years, ... to the same family. The man is a 'rock'! He has never been jaded by his successful career. And his acting skills are impeccable, as witnessed by many of the reactions here to this, 'FOX NN' type, edited presentation.
*For context:* This video, and most circulating RU-vid, is edited and condensed down to a 60 second clip. The actual panel interview is much, much longer and Ed Harris' actions in this portion was in response to a reporters question. Ed Harris did not have a meltdown, nor get angry. The panel interview kept going after this. Everyone didn't get up and leave directly afterwards like this clip suggests.
There's a comment further down from someone who apparently was there: the moderator supposedly banged the table to get everyone's attention at the beginning. This pissed off Harris I guess so he made a point about it at the end.
