Greetings Hidden Pearls fans, friends and family. Very excited about this episode as we continue talking with some other NFL fathers around mindful parenting, concepts, and some of the ups and downs in general of trying to raise kids and the transition into the NFL.
This conversation is with Ed Kelce as we discuss the early years for Travis and Jason as they were growing up in Cleveland, some of the obstacles they faced and what life was like for Ed and Donna. Enjoy some real deep nuggets and wisdom from Ed on attributes for living a successful life surviving the chaos as well as the economic ups and downs of 70s, 80s and 90s Steel Mill industry.
Then the transition from high school to the University of Cincinnati as well as the draft and transition into NFL life thereafter. It’s been quite a ride and gratitude, love and humility breathe through all parts of this one.
As Ed was taught and is fond of saying: “We are measured by the way in which we treat our fellow humans on this planet. Not how rich we are nor how big, strong or successful in any athletic endeavor. But how is it that we treat our neighbor?”

But for real though. I agree. It is so easy for many to just see the sort of center of attention, performer, goofey Travis with flashy fits before a game. And let prejudice take over. But ever since I’ve heard this to the core belief that you ALWAYS treat people kindly if you are able. And that you aren’t worth more if you are a great baller with money, if you don’t act right and treat others well. That his Dad has mentioned in several settings now. And also both Jason and Travis has repeatedly talked about it as if that is their core, something like ”if I wasn’t treating others well like I was raised to do, I would be ashamed of myself and Dad would let me know”. And I actually think it shows in for ex how Travis values his teammates, and is one of the ones on the lookout for signs if his friend in the locker room with PTSD symptoms. Is looking like he might be in a bad place. He is according to one of their coaches, one of the first to then flag for that, and supports him. And I might be wrong, but I actually think that that is a trait and ingrained as a natural thing to do, if you grow up learing what Ed here is putting weight on. It doesn’t become performative. It becomes who you are and what you believe.

Bruce, thank you for interviewing Papa Kelce. He made have answered your questions a little sideways from the original intent, but it was great listening to him. He is indeed a hidden pearl, and Jason and Travis are so lucky to have him and Donna as parents. They are so supportive of their sons and in their down to earth, normal way, raised outstanding young men!

Great episode! I have been a listener of New Heights since the beginning and got to know about Ed through that. I listened to the episode that Travis did with Hidden Pearls. Both have such good information. It’s clear that Ed and Donna raised Jason and Travis to shoot for the stars but also remember the people who helped you along the way. The way they both give back to their communities is so admirable. Ed’s comment about it’s how you treat your neighbor is so true.
