I hope folks realize that every piece of the Golden Nugget has been touched by many hands, at each stage even. This is the definition of a custom built vehicle. Building a rig like this entails a lot of fitting and re-engineering. In a custom shop, these builds often take a couple of years. You guys are doing a great job. Kudos to all involved!

I saw a custom restoration on Graveyard Cars that took years. I think part of it was probably hunting down original parts though. Something this build couldn't do many times.

Always gotta use antiseize when using stainless on stainless hardware or you’ll get galling and cold weld them together.

I discovered that on the nice stainless U bolts that I used on ham radio antennas on my tower. They still looked shiny and new, and snapped right off when I tried to loosen them.

Ive seen a stainless coupler being slid down a shaft with two fingers suddenly stop. When we eventually cut it off we could see that it had picked up some dust and then galled and welded itself to the shaft. Scared shitless everytime i handle anything stainless on stainless. Even redesigned some assemblies to avoid stainless on stainless.

Or stainless nuts on galvanized bolts. Anti-seize has an amazing ability to get on EVERYTHING. You use a ml of A-S and you get 10 ml on your hands, shirt, and forehead.

Ben, I am 67 years old, I have a speed handle that I have had and used regularly ever since I was 18, very similar to the one I saw you using, and I LOVE IT!!! I thought that I may have been the only person on the planet that used a speed handle and there you were using a speed handle!! I think I love you!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have to admit, I'm a bit jealous. If I still lived in the States, I'd drive down to check it out, but am in Japanland now, so no chance of taking a drive just to see it (unless Paul's willing to build me the ultimate snorkel system). I have to live vicariously through comments like yours and just imagine what it'd be like.

Love your channel, great technical description of real life tinkering, designing, adjusting along the way......redoing. also very much like the fact that although you do edit, as it really would be impossible to show everything as it would need to be live, it still looks as if you're not hiding anything and it actually feels like in reality, where nothing goes easy and everything takes time and sweat to accomplish. Very much appreciate the fact that you keep your family close and pushing together through everything, while still maintaining everyone's independent stance and letting them sharpen their skills. My father was like that, he was amazed once I was a man and would help him by telling him how to do stuff. My Pop saved me once, my dad said I was in the way and Pop told him off. If the boy wants to help then let him. So maybe suggest to your man that the kids wouldn't be in his way if he asked them to help. Makes for a healthy child letting them help, even if it takes a bit longer and you have to do it again when their not watching.

Definitely use some type of anti-seize with stainless bolts, otherwise they become their own locknuts without the hardware.

Based off everything I’ve read on the Jeep forum about double cardan driveshafts like you got, it’s gonna be absolutely necessary to make sure the pinion of the axle is the same angle as the driveline so that thing don’t vibrate like crazy. Will most likely have to fab up some wedge blocks for the rear springs 👍🏼

Can't tell you how much I enjoy your videos! If I can ever get my hhr panel fixed, my stepdaughter and I want to take a trip to Colorado and Utah and we definitely want to stop by for a quick visit. I used to do fabrication as well, but now I have C.R.P.S. in both of my feet and can no longer work. Being on a fixed income I may never get my hhr repaired, (front end damage) but know that we thoroughly enjoy every one of your videos and hope to visit someday. SS bolts and impacts are usually the issues I encounter if you put them on with a wrech or ratchet and I prefer to lube them. They tend to gal due to the heat from the impact speed.

They'll gall when installed with a ratchet. It isn't the installation, it's the material. Use anti-seize.

I use stainless bolts for work, and I've learned to never install them dry. Always use anti-seize.

So glad to see Ben and Paul working together, they have absolute symmetry. Not many brothers can even be in the same room together, much less work on ANY projects, whether together or not, even in the other's presence. But both of you, on the SAME project?! I feel Ben’s pain with the stainless steel hardware. I was using some on my truck and had issues with the nut “cold welding” to the bolt.

I like to use stainless fasteners. You need to use antiseize compound when fastening stainless bolts to stainless nuts so they can be unbolted without breaking. I love this project that all of you are putting so much time into and it looks beautiful.

OH, and you can make the stick pointy if you want also. And for marks you can let dry, use finger nail polish, that stuff dries fast and does not come off. and you can make a pin point mark with the tiny brush in there.

Nugget's looking great. There's a type of anti seize I use on Solar system nuts so they don't weld on, but often they bind from use of impact guns, so we can blame Robbie & his crew. LOL! It must be nervous work having to be careful with all that pretty new paint everywhere? Can't wait to see the big reveal.

i worked for john deere we had a 6 ft snapon rachet by 1 " drive with a times 4 multiplier. used to torgue clyinder ram gland nuts

Stainless bolts can definitely gall without anti-seize (aka creeping death) because of the protective chromium oxide that makes it not rust. My Jeep probably has 2 lbs of Locktite silver anti-seize on all the SS bolts.

I noticed one thing the other day when I was watching the videos on Edd's Golden Nugget. I noticed that when it was being hauled off the mountain, Edd had high rear view mirrors mounted on his fenders. He's going to need them again for hauling his trailer around. I haven't heard anyone mention them in any of the videos.

The trick with stainless hardware is to lubricate it with something prior to installation. If the metal is clean when it goes together it cold welds the threads together

I think you may have a hard time convincing Ed that it is the same one that got dragged out of the forest and through a creek, it is all documented with thousands of witnesses. It will be a treat watching it roll in to the MORR yard, trailer and bike in tow. What a wonderful job everyone is doing, thanks for letting us watch and learn.

It's looking great! But I'd replace that rear 3rd member. You have the aluminum one from the front of the Tracker... Very weak. use the same carrier and put into a 3rd member from front or rear of a Samurai. Cast iron and much stronger!
